Review of Brunton Glorb Lantern
By Matt Smith
The Brunton Glorb is a light weight, self contained butane lantern. It pumps out an impressive 60 watts of light, and lasts for over an hour on one charge. Overall, I was impressed with the functionality and radiance of the Glorb. If using this lantern while backpacking, I would recommend packing it carefully. Once the mantle is burned, it is very fragile, just like on a table top lantern. Bumping, jarring, or shaking the lantern will destroy the mantle.
For travelling, I found that putting the lantern upright in the corner of a box, or in the door pocket worked well. In a pack, I had reasonable results packing the lantern upright rolled up in a sweatshirt. However, I would carry several extra mantles just in case. In about 3 months of use I broke about 1 mantle per trip.
Summary: The Glorb makes a great lantern for packing small and light, even while car camping. The Glorb Weighs 8 oz., and sells for around $60. This lantern is a nice gadget for backpacking if you can spare the extra weight.
