Imlay Canyon Gear - Leprechaun Pack - GearReview.com
By Matt Smith

Tom has done it, and created a pack that no matter how I try, I can't make it too heavy by cramming it all full of crap and extra gear. This is essential, because there are many areas of the Colorado Plateau where a larger pack whether from Imlay Canyon Gear, Petzl, Camp USA or Metolius, just won't fit. The skinnies. The Lebrechaun pack is perfect for the skinnies. Imlay Canyon Gear markets the Lepreachaun pack at 1200 cu. in., but how close that is to actual capacity can vary. It seems to me that in the skinnies there is always more than 1200 cu. in., but when I am using the Leprecahun as a general purpose day pack for canyon hiking, it is less than 1200. I'm not sure how that works, but I am reasonably sure it is caused by a warping of the time-space continuum in very narrow slots.

The Leprechaun pack has a few unique features that help suit it for use in the skinnies. First there is minimal external junk such as extra pockets, straps, buckles, and zippers. Second, the haul handle is convenient for when you are hanging your pack on a tether doing some mae west type canyons, or heaving forbid, using the pack as an anchor (not advised, and may result in injury or death)

There is a small internal mesh pocket that is great for organizing, but not really well positioned or easily accessible for a water bladder (at least one larger than 64 oz.) The top zipper only extends about 2/3 of the way around the pack, so you don't get a true "panel" loader. However, this seeming oddity will increase the life of your "Leprechaun" by reducing the amount of zipper exposed to the severe abrasion of the skinnies.

So to cut to the chase, the Leprechaun pack is a bomber little bag that will take a beating and hold just enough stuff for the skinnies, or a scouting day rim walking. You can pick up the Leprechaun pack for about $60.
