Outdoor Research Mithril Soft Shell Parka
By Matt Smith with Guest Contributor Patti Smith

As soft shell jackets have improved and diversified over the last several years, they have become much more specialized, and correspondingly functional. Rather than being constructed with a single shell fabric, multiple fabrics are being combined to provided the needed protection from the elements, while altering the desired level of warmth and breatheability. The Outdoor Research Mithril jacket is one such piece.

The Outdoor Research Mithril Parka features OR's proprietary Ventia soft shell fabric. Long story short, the Mithril is a no nonsense, all weather parka, stripped down to the chassis, and ready to race. The Mithril is light enough that it could easily be taken on a summer trip to the Wind Rivers or Sawtooths, but robust enough that it is perfectly at home on vertical ice.

The entire jacket, including the hood is lined with a micro fleece, and the front of the collar has a brushed tricot panel. The result is a warm, snuggly jacket, that is also comfortable when fully zipped. As the Mithril is a storm shell, there are no pit zips to add weight and bulk. However, the Ventia fabric is breathable enough that you don't start to accumulate sweat until you really get moving. All of the seams are fully taped for completely waterproof protection. Our female tester found the pockets to be a little small for a light pair of gloves, as well as her hands. She noted that the fit seemed more trim and athletic that other jackets and parkas tested this season, so make sure and try one on at a brick and mortar store before ordering online. Also of note, there isn't too much layering room inside the Mithril, so if you are in colder climates where you are going to want some added insulation, consider stepping up a size.

If you have ever tried to justify getting a soft shell, but could stomach the sticker price, this may be the jacket for you. At only $200, the Mithril provides exceptional protection, with much less weight and bulk than other soft shells on the market. In my opinion it is an excellent all around jacket, that may be slightly biased to wet, winter conditions.

Summary: The Mithril Jacket is a bargain basement priced jacket with Ouray quality features. I would recommend it for anyone looking for a multi-functional cross over shell. At $200 bones, where else are you going to get this kind of quality!
