Cloudveil Sixteen Penny Jacket
By John Walter
My wife had finally had it. She had gotten tired of my wardrobe consisting solely of technical outdoor wear. Sad truth is that she was right. Microfleece shirts, nylon pants or cargo shorts, sandals, and various outdoor jackets had become my uniform. “You need to branch out” she told me. “I'm going to buy you some new clothes.” So while she headed off to Old Navy and The Gap, I bolted for my computer to start browsing outdoor manufacturers sites for products from the latest trend—clothing that merged technical wear with more of an every day style.
Falling into the mountain lifestyle category for Cloudveil, the Sixteen Penny Jacket has a casual, quasi-retro look. The Toray Hollow-core nylon outer fabric looks and feels like canvas but sports a DWR coating to repel moisture. The Sixteen Penny Jacket has synthetic insulation, a cozy microfleece lining and tafeta lined sleeves. The lining of the cuffs has the same microfleece material. Two slanted handwarmer pockets, a chest pocket, both of which are zippered, provide ample space for carrying way too many items. An internal microfleece pocket with Velcro closure is the perfect place to carry your mp3 player. The sleeves of the Sixteen Penny Jacket are longer to cover more of your hand and not rise up when extending your arms during work or activity.
I thought the sizing of the Sixteen Penny Jacket was a little different. I have worn a large in Cloudveil ski jackets for several years. However I was swimming in large in this jacket. I returned it for a medium and the size was perfect. My first few attempts at zipping up the jacket was a little frustrating. The zipper wasn't properly clasping and would come unzipped from the bottom, usually zipper death sentence. However, after a few attempts it seemed to break in and I had no other problems.
Summary: The Sixteen Penny Jacket is as at home in Teton Village as in the carpenter shop. When I wasn't in my shell or Primaloft jacket, I was wearing the Sixteen Penny Jacket from Cloudveil, virtually all season long. I felt comfortable wearing it in light rain or even heavy snow. This jacket will set you back a bit more than sixteen pennies. Priced at $150, the Sixteen Penny Jacket is a little pricey. But more than a casual street jacket, the Sixteen Penny will keep you warm in all but full conditions. And it perfectly compliments my new clothing that my wife bought for me from Old Navy.
