Elete Pure Electrolyte Add-In
By Jon Sharp

Elete Pure Electrolyte Add-InHydration packs can be a pain. Don't get me wrong, they are really, really handy. They carry a lot of stuff, which is very useful when venturing out in the wild. They also hold a lot of water. Lots. One drawback, however, is the bladder/reservoir itself. I mean, these things are a pain to clean. Generally, I end up leaving water in them for weeks and months at a time. Fortunately for me, our tap water is so filled with chemicals that I've nothing to fear. However, add a little energy drink mix and you've created the perfect breeding grounds for filth and muck. Even the best "anti-microbial-treated" reservoirs funk up with growing things when sugar is present. For this reason alone, Elete presents a compelling solution.

Elete is a pure electrolyte solution. That is, it contains Magnesium, Sodium, Chloride, Potassium, and Sulfate. That's it. In other words, salt and other essential electrolytes. After you mix in a little Elete, you end up with, get this: water. Except it isn't just water. With these electrolytes, Elete is able to aid hydration better than just water. The idea is that you can consume calories in other forms (gels and bars) and leave the water for just hydration.

In practice, Elete adds a tiny salty flavor to water. Some users found that adding it to filtered water actually improved the taste. Did it help me hydrate? Well, yes. I mean, I drank it and I was no longer thirsty. Until I got thirsty again. At which point, I drank more.

What I'm trying to say is that it is difficult to quantify the benefit of Elete compared to plain water. What is plain is that ingesting electrolytes helps your body replenish needed minerals lost during sweat. Also, it is nice to not worry about drinking a sugary orange drink with that chocolate gel—and the resulting bad aftertaste. For hydration packs, Elete is a must. It is the one electrolyte replacement additive that won't ruin your reservoir (and your day) by leaving a stinking growth-filled mess.

Summary: Besides providing you with a clean way to add electrolytes to your bottles and reservoirs, Elete helps you hydrate more efficiently. There are many different sizes of elete to choose from: single-serving, enough for a hydration pack, pocket-sized bottle, etc. And, for $4.99 (the pocket bottle) you get enough Elete concentrate for 10 - 32oz servings—which makes it one of the least expensive electrolyte replacements on the market.
