KrillĘ Electronic Glow Stick
By Jeff Porcaro

Krill krill n : 1. shrimp-like planktonic crustaceans; many emit a strong blue-green light. 2. Reusable, lightweight lamp that is a cost effective alternative to chemical lights.

The electroluminescence (el) technology used in the KrillTM glow stick was developed as a cost-effective replacement for chemical lights used by the military as markers. The Navy Seals and many emergency service personnel have used the Krill glow stick. It is a safe and effective light source that is designed to not interfere with night vision.

We found the light emitted by the Krill glow stick is bright enough for reading but is not as effective for longer distances, like lighting a trail. It runs on 2 AA batteries, the Extreme model, which burns twice as bright as the original model lasts for 50 hours and the original, will last 120 hours. The Krill glow stick will work for up to 3000 hours before having to replace the unit, which can be recycled for a credit towards the next purchase.

We liked the lightweight design (2.6-oz. with batteries) as well as the included Velcro attachment on the 180 model. The 180 model gives you 180 degrees of light from the stick and the 360 gives you 360 degrees of light from the stick. We use the Krill glow stick as a replacement for a tent lantern or candle. This light is cool, producing almost no heat. The Krill is great for keeping in a survival kit, as there is no limit to its shelf life.

The Krill glow stick is waterproof to 150 feet and is surrounded by a very rugged case. The case has been known to withstand 50-foot drops and continue to work. The lamp can be turned on and off with a twist of the base switch which is near impossible to accidentally turn on.

Summary:
If you use light sticks or candle lanterns the Krill glow stick is the replacement for you. It is economical as it will last for many hours on a set of batteries and can be turned off. Its price is very affordable when you think of how many light-sticks it replaces. The Krill is a great item to include in your emergency kit. It is also a great backcountry light source.

The suggested retail price is $25.00 for the original model and $30.00 for the extreme model.
