Eureka Local Transit
By Rhett Olson

Local Transit
Eureka was right on when they named this pack "Local Transit." With just a few added features, Eureka took an ordinary day pack and made it ready for the streets.

In many ways, this pack is like every other pack you would see on kids lugging their books back and forth from school. It has one main cavity for books and larger items, and a zippered pocket on the outside, that I found plenty big, for all of my pencils, granola bars, bike pump and gloves. In all, the pack has a 1,830 cubic inch capacity.

The "Local Transit" is set apart by its external features. The first and most noticeable are the vertical flaps on its sides. They, along with two straps, can be used for strapping on in-line skates. This is especially useful when using skates as a mode of transportation, not just recreation. I have also found the straps useful for attaching hiking boots and my snowboard boots. A bungee-chord, laced from side to side, runs down lower mid-section of the pack. Besides being a great place for a bike helmet, a jacket or skate board would fit nicely in this space as well.

Other features worth mentioning are the beefy zippers (they seem to be indestructible) and the handle at the top of the pack. The handle is rubber and makes carrying the pack off the shoulder much easier, because it doesn't cut into your hand as webbing straps do. The padded back and use of reflective patches on the shoulder straps are an added bonus.

Now lets talk durability, because there are few things that get more abuse than a good day pack. I have been wearing this pack around campus almost everyday for the last eight months. Over time, it has seen a lot of cargo. I also use it when I go out cruising on my skates. I am especially impressed with the durability of the zippers, because they have always been first to go on my other day packs. Still, with all of the use, there is no visible wearing anywhere on the pack.

Summary
A great pack, especially for students. Its smart design makes carrying bulky items like such as in-line skates and a helmet easy.
