Alpina Control 60 Touring Ski Alpina Control 60 Touring Ski
Sometimes cross country skiing is about getting away from it all and enjoying being outside, and not about the pressures of racing or the extreme nature of exploring off-the-trail backcountry. Wider than Alpina's racing skis and narrower than its backcountry skis, the Control 60 Touring Ski is ideal for Nordic skiers who are out to enjoy long days on the trail for pleasure or fitness. The aptly-named Control provides a wide range of skiers, from beginners to advanced recreational, the easy-gliding stability and control they desire. The Control 60 features a Light Tube Tec core for supple, fluid, and easy flex, which means that you won't have to fight the ski to get optimal performance. At 50mm underfoot, the Control offers a wide, stable platform without being bulky or cumbersome. An embossed waxless base allows the ski to glide freely while still maintaining balanced control. Unlike Alpina's backcountry models, the Control doesn't have metal edges to cut down on weight. A polyethylene topsheet adds a layer of tough durability for many years of use.

Atomic Motion Skintec Ski Atomic Motion Skintec Ski
When you wake up to a blanket of fresh, sparkling snow, you'd rather head out on an exploratory journey than one focused on pace and distance. For venturing into thick pine groves and deep powder off-trail, Atomic presents you with its Motion Skintec Ski. Featuring trickle-down technology from Atomic's top-of-the-line Redster series, Skintec uses modules underfoot to act as miniature climbing skins when you're climbing or kicking. The mohair construction hangs on tight on the climb, without requiring the maintenance that traditional ski constructions call for. When you do want to glide unimpeded through the flats, the Motion's slender, straight shape allows it to slice through fresh storm snow and days-old crust. Playful High Densolite cores give the Motion energy and responsiveness when you're traversing through deep powder on high ridgelines, and the BI 3000 bases hold onto plenty of wax and adapts to a wide range of snow conditions to keep you sliding quietly through a morning in the backcountry.

Atomic Motion Skintec Ski - Women's Atomic Motion Skintec Ski - Women's
On the days you'd rather meander through evergreen forests and forge your own trails on snowy ridgelines, throw the Atomic Women's Motion Skintec Ski in the car and head for the fresh stuff. This delivers the grip you need to climb powerfully in a slim and lightweight package. Once you make it to the descent, the Motion's slender shape will keep you gliding along through open meadows on hard or soft snow. Fischer RCS Skate Plus Ski Fischer RCS Skate Plus Ski
Fischer won the World Cup and World Biathlon title in 1990 with one of the original RCS skate skis, and it's been stacking up medals and championships ever since. While the RCS Skate Plus Ski has been replaced at the top of Fischer's line in recent years by the Speedmax and Carbonlite, it's still a high-performance racing machine, with a lightweight Air Carbon Core that's reinforced with carbon fiber and given added torsional stability by a Power Edge reinforced chassis, letting you turn every ounce of energy output into track-gobbling speed. The RCS has a DTG World Cup Plus base that's ground to excel in average to soft conditions, thanks to a slightly deeper and coarser structure that glides over wetter snow, and Skating 115 camber that distributes weight evenly, relieving pressure at the tip and tail to eliminate stickiness in soft snow. The World Cup Skating sidecut keeps you flying forward, rather than wasting energy moving side to side, and tracks exceptionally well to provide a stable, easy platform. Fischer also gave the RCS a carbon laminate and a hole in the tip to reduce swing weight, increase maneuverability, and help eliminate tip drag, so you can efficiently transition from stride to stride with no hang-ups. Fischer built the RCS using a Precision Pairing System, ensuring that every board has an identical flex and camber profile. It's even given them an infrared factory wax, so all you have to do before hitting the trail is give your bases a quick brush.

Fischer S-Bound 125 Crown Ski Fischer S-Bound 125 Crown Ski
Occupying the sweet spot between Nordic touring and lightweight alpine boards, Fischer's S-Bound 125 Crown Ski is perfect for long adventures in rolling terrain, endless approaches, and quick cruises whether you mount them with Nordic bindings or a telemark setup. The 95mm waist and slightly rockered 125mm shovel is nice and floaty when things get soft, but the steel edges help you make alpine-style turns, even in variable snow, when you're heading down the hill. The S-Bound's best trick, though, is its OffTrack Crown fishscale pattern, which makes it easy to climb moderate hills without having to stop and skin up (if you need extra traction, just attach Fischer's Easy Skins, which attach quickly and simply to the base to let you conquer tougher, slicker climbs. While OffTrack keeps you moving forward, the rest of the Sintec base is waxable for smooth glide, and the Air Channel base combines wood and fiberglass to keep the S-Bound lightweight and lively no matter how you like to ski.

Fischer SCS Skate Ski Fischer SCS Skate Ski
You don't need to be a gold medalist to ski the Fischer SCS Skate Skis, but they're not cut out for never-evers, either. Fischer built the SCS with its World Cup Skate sidecut, which provides killer tracking and stability, particularly in V2 and V2 alternate. It also designed these sticks with an Air Core Basalite Pro core, which is made of super-light composite, milled with weight-reducing air channels, and reinforced with basalt fibers to give you a moderately stiff ski that flexes consistently in all temperatures, balancing power and smoothness. The World Cup Pro base is designed to be as versatile as the core, with a DTG World Cup Universal structure that handles wet, cold, warm, and powdery snow with equal aplomb and doesn't require an obsessive wax technician to keep it fast. The SCS is versatile, but it's no do-it-all-but-do-it-poorly wimp. It's built with Power Edge technology that stiffens the chassis of the ski, giving you a more powerful kick with less energy loss due to unnecessary torsional twisting, and works with the durable Tail Protector to give your skis a long, warp-free life. Like all of Fischer's race-inspired skis, the SCS is built using Computer Flex Control, ensuring that both of your boards will have identical flex and camber profiles, too, so you don't feel like you're skiing a different setup on each side.

When you want to toss your worries aside for a bit, you head to the Nordic track. The easygoing nature of the ski comes from Efficient Forward technology, which provides a forgiving kick action and increased elasticity so your movements are more efficient. Rossignol BC 110 Positrack Ski Rossignol BC 110 Positrack Ski
You finally figured out a way to spend the winter living in a snowbound yurt and brought the Rossignol BC 110 Positrack Ski to be the horse that gets you around the rugged and empty hills you now call home. Every time you try and head out, though, you're accosted by a crazy hermit with a long beard and his wolf-dog, who bare teeth and wave guns in your face until you're forced to turn around and go somewhere else. Luckily, the BC 110 is incredibly versatile, thanks to its Positrack base that eliminates the need for kick wax while maintaining excellent glide, and an LDC wood core that has milled channels throughout to minimize weight, so you can scarper up and over hills before the hermit knows you're gone. Active Cap construction utilizes a flexible design to increase float and performance in uneven snow, and sandwiches it in a multi-directional fiberglass laminate for torsional stiffness when you're pushing the BC 110 downhill with a half-wild canine tearing at your tails. The BC 110 isn't the widest ski in Rossignol's Nordic touring lineup, but at 110mm in the tip it's it has enough float to prevent you getting bogged down. It also boasts a slightly rockered tip and wide sidecut designed to keep you stable in soft and variable conditions. Full-length metal edges and a taller camber profile let the BC hold its own on harder snow and make short work of chop and windslab--if only they could find a way around that aggro-hermit and his devil beast.

When you finally find the hermit, down the whiskey he offers you, pat his dog on the head, and tell him all about how the slight tip rocker, wide sidecut, and low camber profile help you to shred all sorts of different snow. If he likes you, he might offer to hitch you up to his wolf for the most awesome tow up the mountain you've ever experienced. You'll thank the ski gods for the torsionally stiff fiberglass laminate Activ Cap construction and full-length metal edges when you're getting pulled by a wild beast, and praise them again on the way down when you're cruising through soft snow thanks to the forgiving outer cap material. When you go past the yurt for the last time, high-five the hermit, toss the wolf a piece of your beef jerky, and cruise home to tell everyone about the best day ever.

You refuse to be tied down, which is why you moved into the Beartooths, built a yurt out of squirrel pelts, and raised a wolf pup to be your one and only companion. Once a winter, you head into town to stock up on whiskey and wolf kibble, and the only backcountry vehicle you trust to get you there and back is the Rossignol BC 70 Positrack Ski. It's got all the best features of alpine skis for the descent into civilization, like full-length metal edges and and a wide sidecut to handle variable conditions, combined with the best parts of traditional Nordic boards to help you get back to the wilderness ASAP, like a light and low-density LDC wood-air core and grippy Positrack waxless bases. You're bound to encounter everything from deep powder to bulletproof ice to wind-blown slab on your journey, but damn it, your wolf is hungry and your flask is empty, so you'll just have to deal with the variable conditions. Luckily, the Positrack is made with Active Cap construction, which combines flexible RossiCap technology with a stiff multi-directional fiberglass laminate to give it a balance of torsional rigidity, directional stability, and consistent performance in deep and uneven snow. Rossignol increased performance in variable conditions by giving the Positrack a slightly more dramatic camber profile, allowing the ski to ride over chop without bucking you like that moose you tried to tame last summer. Rossignol Delta Skating Ski Rossignol Delta Skating Ski
Whether you're looking to hit V02 max, or just refining your technique, the Delta Skating Ski is possibly the most versatile option in the Rossignol cross-country arsenal. It's built with a larger sweet spot than Rossignol's hardcore X-IUM race series, making it easier to improve on your technique. Instead of using a carbon laminate, the Delta utilizes a friendlier, and more forgiving, fiberglass laminate for a softer feel. A friendly flex doesn't come at the expense of speed, though, as the Delta comes with the same K7000 base tuning you'll find on the race-ready X-ium and a lower, shorter tip to reduce vibration and improve maneuverability, so you can hammer hills and step turns without feeling as tippy as a one-legged chair. In addition to the fiberglass laminate, the Delta uses Rossignol's lightweight Honeycomb core with an Activ'Cap construction, keeping the ski stiff enough to power up hills and over flats, while maintaining softer tips and tails to cruise over uneven snow. The Delta is marginally heavier (by 30g) than the Delta Course, a difference barely more than the weight of a pencil, and it has a Racing Cobra sidecut that's slightly wider in the tip to keep the ski moving in the direction of travel when on edge. When it's running flat, double guide grooves on the base keep it tracking forward, and an integrated IFP plate allows drill-free binding mounting and adjustment.

Salomon S-Lab Skate Red Ski Salomon S-Lab Skate Red Ski
When you show up for race day knowing that conditions are a little sloppy but speed isn't optional, pull out the Salomon S-Lab Skate Red Ski. A World Cup-caliber rocket, the Red is made to give expert skiers and serious racers the boost they need to challenge for the podium, so it's not surprising that it's stiff, powerful, and responsive. The Nomex composite honeycomb core keeps weight to an absolute minimum--just barely over two pounds per pair--while extra-thin wood sidewalls and a carbon-fiber laminate give the ski powerful rebound to propel you forward through heavy, wet snow with every kick. Salomon designed the Red expressly for warm, soft, and sloppy snow, which basically means it softened up the flex a little bit and pressed the ski with Salomon's 587 Balanced Camber profile. This reduces the length of glide zones and raises the tip and tail to limit suction when you're gliding over wet snow. Every ski is also pressed with Digital Dynamic Flex Control to ensure perfectly uniform flex characteristics in every pair. In keeping with it's soft-snow orientation, the Red features a pre-waxed G5 White base that equips it to glide as much as possible in sloppy snow, along with a World Cup Warm grind that structures the base to perform at top efficiency when the snow is wet, warm, and soft.

Salomon S-Lab Skate Yellow Ski Salomon S-Lab Skate Yellow Ski
When conditions are prime--firm snow, cold but not frigid temperatures, and pristine trails--pull out the Salomon S-Lab Skate Yellow Ski. A World Cup-caliber rocket, the Yellow is made to give expert skiers and serious racers the boost they need to challenge for the podium, so it's not surprising that it's stiff, powerful, and responsive. Its Yellow distinction designates it as ideal for the most common conditions including: compact trails, snow that sits somewhere between wet and sloppy and bone dry, and cold-to-warm temperatures. The Stiff Nomex composite honeycomb core keeps weight to an absolute minimum at just barely over two pounds per pair, while extra-thin wood sidewalls and a full-length carbon laminate give the ski powerful rebound to propel you forward with every kick. Salomon designed the Yellow expressly for firm and compact snow, pressing the ski into its 569 Advanced Camber profile. This profile moves the apex of the camber several centimeters forward to increase pressure in the tail and decrease it in the tip, giving you a more powerful kick, increased stability, and easier tip return. Every ski is also pressed with Digital Dynamic Flex Control to ensure perfectly uniform flex characteristics in every pair. In keeping with it's hard-snow orientation, the Yellow features a G5 Zeolit Universal base that's meant to glide fast in all snow temperatures, and Salomon gave it a World Cup Universal grind that structures the base to perform in temperatures 17F and up.
