Merlin CrusherTi Frameset Merlin CrusherTi Frameset
The Merlin CrusherTi Frameset began life here in our office-bound daydreams with the eventual aim of producing the ideal gravel racer. The Crusher isn't a grinder made for noodling and commuting. Instead, it's inspired by the new breed of multi-surface races and events that take riders across road, gravel, dirt, and high-altitude granite moonscapes where patches of snow manage to persist even into the heat of July. By adding an ENVE carbon disc fork to Merlin's titanium expertise, we think we've helped establish the new standard, but we'll let your own legs and gravel ambitions be the final metric. By now, you know the standard line about titanium. It's springy, it dampens vibrations without feeling dead, it's responsive, it's lively -- all of which sounds very nice, but the tendency to apply these modifiers to a frame's material alone glosses over the most important aspect of any frame's ride quality: how the damn thing is put together. That's why names like Merlin, who knows how to manipulate titanium in order to excite the above praise, carry so much weight in the cycling industry. That's also why the US-based manufacturer was the only obvious choice to build the CrusherTi. The CrusherTi's head badge indicates that Merlin's company name refers to the bird of prey and not the sorcerous Briton of Arthurian myth. But we know better. There's definitely some alchemy at play in how the frame transforms rough roads and multi-surface punishment into solid gold. Of course, no frame-design magic in the world can elicit descriptions like "springy, damping, etc." from a frame that starts with sub-prime materials, so the CrusherTi is made entirely from double-butted 3Al-2. 5V titanium sourced right here in the US. This alloyed Ti's particular modulus means that, under stress, it expresses less deformity than aluminum and more than carbon fiber -- all of which is the pseudo-engineering talk behind the pseudo-marketing fluff ("springy, responsive") that all sloughs away onc...

Niner BSB 9 RDO 3-Star Rival 1 Complete Bike - 2018 Niner BSB 9 RDO 3-Star Rival 1 Complete Bike - 2018
Named after the cross mantra of Blood, Sweat, and Beers, the Niner BSB RDO 3-Star Rival 1 Complete Bike satisfies the cyclocross racer seeking a rocket ship for merciless sprints to the finish, slogs across sand pits, hectic hops over barriers, and refreshing beer hand-ups. Designed around Niner's flagship RDO Carbon frame, the BSB 9 RDO imparts unrelenting stiffness and power transfer, so every turn of the cranks equates to forward-surging momentum. For the 2018 model year, the BSB 9 RDO gets flat-mount disc brakes and two opposite colorways for the bold and stealth-minded racer alike. Carrying Niner's Race Day Optimized carbon frame, or RDO for short, the BSB 9 RDO benefits from Niner's Carbon Compaction System (CCS). This carbon manufacturing process uses a rigid internal mold for a tighter, more consistent compaction of the carbon layers, yielding an increase in the precision of wall thickness, as well as a significant reduction of resin pooling. This means the engineers at Niner can tune the BSB 9 RDO with the exact characteristics they're after--namely unrelenting stiffness, strength, and ride quality. Race-ready geometry makes the BSB 9 RDO adept at navigating tight courses with its steep head tube angle lending agility and steering response. Flatly sculpted tubes enhance the bike's torsional rigidity for rocket-like acceleration, as well as making it easier to shoulder the bike when you're hopping over obstacles. Another stand-out, Niner's Carbon RDO Fork delivers high levels of stiffness with its RDO carbon lay-up, tapered steerer, and 15-millimeter thru-axle. Naturally, the BSB 9 RDO is disc brake only, with the newest incarnation sporting flat-mount discs with 140-millimeter rotors for powerful stopping in the nastiest, muddiest conditions. This three-star build kit comes with a SRAM Rival 1x11 drivetrain for no-nonsense shifting without having to deal with a pesky front derailleur. The Stans Grail Wheelset offers an optimal 24. 5-millimeter width f...

Niner BSB 9 RDO Cyclocross Frameset - 2016 Niner BSB 9 RDO Cyclocross Frameset - 2016
Niner revisited the world of Blood, Sweat, and Beers, namesake of the BSB 9 RDO, to update the race-ready frameset for the upcoming cyclocross season. The already stiff, light frame got stronger with the addition of 12 x 142mm rear thru axle; but otherwise, Niner was so pleased with the functionality of the design that it didn't feel the need to make any other changes to it -- aside from some new graphics, of course. The BSB 9 RDO is built for the rowdy, obstacle-embracing 'cross set, so it's expected to exhibit stiffness and strength on difficult terrain while remaining light. Niner achieved this balance by using its Carbon Compaction System to mold the frame, fine-tuning the placement of carbon and eliminating any material that didn't directly contribute to the frame's sharp handling or lateral stiffness. The process involves laying-up the carbon around rigid foam molds, which Niner claims provide a more consistent shape than traditional bladder molds. At the end of the process, the inside of the tubes is as flawless as the outside, and the BSB 9 RDO is lighter than comparable frames. The 530g, thru-axle fork is also fully carbon, and it borrows much of its design from the rigid fork on Niner's Air 9 RDO hardtail with a slightly flatter profile to better adapt it to cyclocross. Don't deny the BSB 9 RDO the pleasure of 'cross racing. With its steep head and seat tube angles and the pedal clearance of a high bottom bracket, the frame was made for it. Niner's roots in mountain bikes mean it's no surprise that the frame was built for disc brakes that offer plenty of clearance during tight cornering, and it's also compatible with internally routed mechanical or electronic drivetrains. The frame is finished with a playful nod to cyclocross's often irreverent attitude: When you shoulder the BSB 9 to navigate a steep run-up, astute fellow racers behind you will get some encouragement from Niner's signature admonition to "Pedal, damn it," which is inscribed on the bo...

Niner BSB 9 RDO Frameset - 2018 Niner BSB 9 RDO Frameset - 2018
The Niner BSB 9 RDO Frameset is a purpose built cyclocross machine that makes no apologies in its unrelenting quest for speed. Standing for the catch phrase "Blood, Sweat, and Beers," the BSB 9 RDO satisfies the cyclocross racer seeking a nimble-handling rocket for all-out sprints across the finish line, hectic hops over barriers, slogs across sand pits, and refreshing beer hand-ups. New for 2018, the latest model gets updated with flat-mount discs, as well as two opposing colorways for bold and stealth-minded racers alike. Carrying Niner's Race Day Optimized carbon frame, or RDO for short, the BSB 9 RDO benefits from an unbelievably stiff, lightweight construction for uncompromising acceleration the instant you turn the pedals. RDO carbon benefits from Niner's Carbon Compaction System (CCS), in which a rigid internal mold provides a tighter, more consistent compaction of the carbon layers during the manufacturing process. Ultimately, this cutting-edge manufacturing process gives Niner's engineers the ability to dial in the exact traits they're after, namely unrelenting stiffness, high levels of strength, and ride quality. Racier geometry makes the BSB 9 RDO stand apart from the gravel-oriented RLT (Road Less Traveled) model from Niner. You'll find the BSB 9 RDO has a steeper head tube, higher bottom bracket, shorter wheelbase, and snappier chainstays than the RLT, giving it much quicker handling, more pedal clearance, and a racier overall feel. The frame's flatly sculpted tubes enhance the bike's torsional rigidity, and also makes it easier to shoulder over course obstacles. Thru-axles at the front and rear improve the precise tracking of the bike, especially when you factor in the exceptionally stiff Niner RDO carbon fork with a tapered steerer. Internal routing cleans up its overall aesthetic while keeping everything protected from flinging muck and debris. Additionally, it's compatible with electronic drivetrains, adding a futureproof element to this cyclocro...

Niner RLT 9 4-Star Ultegra Hydro Complete Bike - 2017 Niner RLT 9 4-Star Ultegra Hydro Complete Bike - 2017
Whether you're ripping buttery singletrack, packing up for a multi-day gravel adventure, or toeing the line at a cyclocross race, the 2017 Niner RLT 9 4-Star Ultegra Hydro Complete Bike boasts the versatility to cover it all. Featuring what Niner dubs "fire road geometry," the RLT is a little bit slacker, longer, and has a lower bottom bracket than its cyclocross race-bred sibling, the BSB 9. That makes it both agile enough for short, technical bursts and comfortable enough for days of adventuring over less-travels pathways. The 3-star build comes kitted out with Shimano's much loved Ultegra drivetrain, powerful hydraulic brakes, and a versatile Stan's NoTubes wheelset that's built to handle a wide range of tubeless tire pressures. The RLT 9's tube set borrows heavily from the one used on Niner's aluminum AIR 9 frame. The tapered head tube accommodates a matching tapered fork, which is unsurprisingly similar to Niner's award-winning RDO mountain fork. The dropouts have integrated rack and fender mounts, which only add to your setup options, and the burly replaceable hanger means that even if a catastrophic derailleur-related incident ends your ride, your RLT will live to roll another day. The hydro-formed tubes are designed to neutralize chatter, helping the RLT to maintain a smooth ride. Additionally, it makes the frame much stronger than it would be had round tubes been employed. And to enhance the smooth ride, the RLT has a 27. 2mm diameter seatpost. The combination of the smaller diameter and Niner's vibration dampening carbong post means that you won't be getting beat up as much as you'd expect, especially on washboard roads.

Niner RLT 9 RDO 3-Star Rival Complete Bike - 2017 Niner RLT 9 RDO 3-Star Rival Complete Bike - 2017
Eschewing national sanctioning bodies for miles upon miles of desolate gravel roads and embracing self-supported autonomy doesn't mean you have to give up your roadie-inspired love of speedy carbon. Niner's new addition to its Road Less Traveled lineup, the 2017 RLT 9 RDO 3-Star Rival Complete Bike, lets you have it all with lightweight carbon construction, comfortable positioning, and a snappy rear triangle that dances through turns. As expected from an RLT, this bike is a bit slacker, longer, and lower than its 'cross racing cousin, Niner's BSB 9, but also sees a few tweaks compared to its aluminum and steel RLT siblings that boost its snappy profile. Shorter stays tighten up the rear triangle and work in tandem with a lower bottom bracket for a ride that's confidently responsive. This combination lends the RLT 9 more stability and comfort over rough roads while still maintaining the agility to rocket out of turns. The dropouts have integrated rack and fender mounts, which only add to your setup options, and the replaceable hanger means that even if a catastrophic derailleur-related incident ends your ride, your RLT will live to roll another day. Niner uses its Race Day Optimized (RDO) Carbon Compaction System to mold this RLT's frame, fine tuning the placement of carbon and eliminating any material that doesn't contribute to the frame's structural soundness and ride quality. To further enhance the smooth ride, the RLT has a 27. 2mm seatpost, which adds an element of give to absorb bumps and chatter so you won't be getting beat up as much as you'd expect, especially on washboard roads.

Niner RLT 9 RDO 5-Star Ultegra Di2 Complete Bike - 2017 Niner RLT 9 RDO 5-Star Ultegra Di2 Complete Bike - 2017
After a few too many years of repeating road race courses and uncountable circles in boring business park criteriums, it's time to take a break from the pavement and tackle some finish lines on the road less traveled. But all that time on the road has set some pretty high standards for lightweight frame construction and instilled a no-compromise approach to what you need from a race bike. The good news is that Niner answers the call for top-tier gravel steeds with its 2017 RLT 9 RDO 5-Star Ultegra Di2 Complete Bike. It channels the lightweight carbon construction, precise Shimano Di2 drivetrain, and dreamy ENVE wheels we've come to expect in race-worthy road rides, but the whole thing is wrapped in a durable all-road package that's dead set on speed no matter what surfaces the event promoter sets in front of you. As expected from an RLT, this bike is a bit slacker, longer, and lower than its race-bred cousin, Niner's BSB 9, but also sees a few tweaks compared to its aluminum and steel RLT siblings that boost its snappy profile. Shorter stays tighten up the rear triangle and work in tandem with a lower bottom bracket for a confidently responsive ride experience. This combination lends the RLT 9 more stability and comfort over rough roads while still maintaining the agility to rocket out of turns and kick up punchy climbs. Niner RLT 9 RDO Frameset - 2017 Niner RLT 9 RDO Frameset - 2017
Niner's 2017 RLT 9 RDO Frameset brings dream build potential to those of us who eschew traditional racing disciplines and instead choose miles and miles of packed dirt and gravel roads as our playground. Featuring Niner's renowned RDO carbon fiber, this RLT breaks from its aluminum and steel roots to bring light, stiff, carbon speed to your next gravel adventure with endurance geometry designed to get you comfortably to the day's destination. As expected from an RLT (short for Road Less Traveled), this bike is a bit slacker, longer, and lower than its 'cross-specific cousin, Niner's BSB 9, but also sees a few tweaks compared to its aluminum and steel RLT siblings that imbue it with slightly snappier handling without sacrificing comfort. Shorter stays tighten up the rear triangle and work in tandem with a lower bottom bracket for a confidently responsive ride experience. This combination lends the RLT more stability and comfort over rough roads while still maintaining the agility to rocket out of turns and carve loose, sketchy descents. Integrated rack and fender mounts on the frame and fork provide a versatile array of setup options, and the replaceable hanger means that even if you take a less than graceful, drive-side, derailleur compromising dive, your RLT will live to roll another day. Niner uses its Race Day Optimized Carbon Compaction System to mold this RLT's frame, fine tuning the placement of carbon and eliminating any material that doesn't contribute to the frame's structural soundness and ride quality. To further enhance the smooth ride, the RLT has a 27. 2mm diameter seatpost, which adds an element of give to absorb bumps and chatter so you won't be getting beat up as much as you'd expect, especially on washboard roads. Niner RLT 9 Steel 2-Star Apex 1 Complete Bike - 2017 Niner RLT 9 Steel 2-Star Apex 1 Complete Bike - 2017
It's no secret that the RLT 9 Steel is one of our favorite gravel bikes, and we're excited to see it back for 2017 with some updated colorways and that legendarily smooth and responsive steel ride. The RLT 9 Steel 2-Star Apex 1 Complete Bike is an adventurer at heart, and takes its Road Less Traveled moniker seriously with a build kit that embodies the all-road ethos perhaps more than any other ride. SRAM's economical but no less functional Apex one-by drivetrain gets the nod, eliminating the front derailleur and any mechanical worries it may have brought with it out on the road. The 42-tooth front chainring and 11-42 tooth cassette don't skimp on gears though, providing a wide range of options worthy of all but the steepest of mountain grades. Its 35mm tires are the ideal starting point to manage everything from pavement to light singletrack, with frame clearance to handle tires up to 44mm in width should the adventure call for burlier fare. The frame's geometry is a compromise between Niner's mountain frames and the aggressive disposition of the 'cross-specific BSB frameset. Compared to the latter, the RLT 9 features a longer chainstay, a lower bottom bracket, and a more relaxed head tube angle. This translates into a lower center of gravity that still affords clearance over obstacles and while cornering, and a wider wheelbase for stability over rough roads and long miles. In our own test rides of the geometry, we found that it eats up washboard and is nimble enough for mellow singletrack, so, if you're keen on making the RLT a durable singletrack speedster with zero suspension, then throw on some knobby tires and get to it. This bike's only limit is you.The RLT 9 Steel does make an admirable concession to carbon by including a Carbon RDO fork to further soak up and smooth out road vibrations. The fork is no delicate road race specimen, though-- as evidenced by its trail-inspired 15mm thru-axle anchor--and the inclusion of rack mounts means it also doesn't shy a...

Niner RLT 9 Steel 4-Star Ultegra Complete Bike - 2017 Niner RLT 9 Steel 4-Star Ultegra Complete Bike - 2017
Carbon frames have their place in aggressive race venues and the quest for marginal gains, but when we're out in the wilderness in search of serene scenery and gravel-filled adventure, no frame material fits the bill quite like the springy responsiveness and durability of steel. And perhaps no bike embodies the Road Less Traveled ethos more thoroughly than Niner's RLT 9 Steel 4-Star Ultegra Complete Bike, which has Reynolds 853 steel tubing, a Shimano Ultegra drivetrain, and just the right balance of carbon accessories to soften the bumps without overshadowing that prized steel ride. It lives to escape the concrete jungle for the dirt-strewn wilds of coastal mountain ranges, never ending seas of prairie, and country B-roads that may never see the attention of a grader. The frame's geometry is a compromise between Niner's mountain frames and the aggressive disposition of the 'cross-specific BSB frameset. Compared to the latter, the RLT 9 features longer chainstays, a lower bottom bracket, and a more relaxed head tube angle. This translates into a lower center of gravity that still affords clearance over obstacles and while cornering, a wider wheelbase for stability, and tire clearance that lets you plush-out to the tune of 1. 75in (just over 44mm). In our own test rides of the geometry, we found that it eats up washboard and is nimble enough for mellow singletrack, so, if you're keen on making the RLT a durable singletrack speedster with zero suspension, then throw on some knobby tires and get to it. This bike's only limit is you. Despite Niner's love of steel, the RLT 9 Steel does make a reasonable concession to carbon by including snappy CX Carbon wheels, carbon cockpit components, and a Carbon RDO fork to further soak up and smooth out road vibrations. The fork is no delicate road race specimen, though--as evidenced by its 15mm thru-axle anchor--and the inclusion of rack mounts means it also doesn't shy away from carrying its own weight. Niner claims its rigid ...

Raleigh RX 2.0 Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2017 Raleigh RX 2.0 Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2017
While smaller statured riders applauded the Raleigh RXW for its range of sizes to accommodate those on the shorter end of the spectrum, the taller riders among us roared approval of its counterpart, the 2017 RX 2. 0 Complete Cyclocross Bike and its sizing options that include riders up to 6-feet, 5-inches tall. Its light and durable aluminum construction keeps costs affordable, while a SRAM one-by drivetrain and TRP Spyre mechanical disc brakes make this a race-ready bike that's also chomping at the bit to tackle all-road adventures. The RX 2. 0's sizing range spans from 52cm up to 62cm and encompasses recommended rider heights from 5-feet, 4-inches up to the previously mentioned, towering 6-feet, 5-inch heights. Compared to its RXW counterpart, the RX 2. 0 features a slightly higher stand over height for a more traditionally flat top tube angle. The RX 2. 0's head tube is a little shorter and just a hair steeper, giving this bike a slightly more aggressive stance for snappy responsiveness and confident handling. For riders falling within the crossover sizes of these two models, these tweaks provide welcome options to best match varying levels of flexibility and positioning preferences. It's worth noting that both the RX 2. 0 and the RXW enjoy nearly identical build spec, which means choosing between the two comes down to your stature, geometry preferences, and ride style, with no penalty in componentry on either side of the scale. The main difference in the spec sheets is the chainring--where the RXW gets a climb-friendly 38-tooth ring, the RX 2. 0 utilizes a more race-oriented 42-tooth option, which makes it a powerhouse off the start line, with the versatility to also tackle moderate terrain and gravel excursions.

Raleigh RXC Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2017 Raleigh RXC Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2017
The latest version of the RXC Complete Cyclocross Bike really needs no introduction. The previous model became a staple at start lines because it combined the pedigree of one of 'cross' most storied brands with the early adapter innovation of twin thru-axles. Now, a host of upgrades further cements the CXR's status, including shorter chainstays, flat-mount disc brake mounts, and a threaded bottom bracket. The addition of a threaded bottom bracket deserves special callout for the added precision and reduced creaking, popping, and wear. This added durability--along with the future-proof flat-mount brakes--highlights the RXC's intended use: cyclocross racing for years to come. The RXC has more aggressive stack but a slightly longer wheelbase than the RX 2. 0, dimensions that recommend it both for the tight quarters and frantic accelerations of 'cross and the abuse of the new breed of gravel races. The riders on Raleigh Clement take this recommendation to heart, relying on the RXC frameset throughout the year for all manner of mixed-terrain events. Despite those slight alterations in geometry, the RXC and RX 2. 0 remain fairly similar in profile. The real difference is in materials, with the former's full carbon fiber construction. You know the benefits of carbon (stiffer, lighter, more aesthetically pleasing joints), so we'll jump straight to Raleigh's approach to the material. Raleigh eschews monocoque builds in favor of Direct Connect, which involves first making the carbon tubes and then building the frame in a jig. In addition to satisfying our retro fetish (Who doesn't love seeing frames in jigs'), this process allows Raleigh to create a precisely targeted lay-up schedule that layers the right types of carbon in the right places. Rather than juggling the joints and overlap of different materials, Direct Connect lets the engineers focus on the frame's different areas separately. These tubes are joined with a high-modulus overwrap that secures the tubes and creat...

Raleigh RXM Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2017 Raleigh RXM Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2017
The 2017 Raleigh RXM Complete Cyclocross Bike is a modern answer to the whirlwind of new materials and ever more expensive cyclocross setups that seem to forget that steel is a favorite for a reason. Basking in tradition, the RXM, or RXMetal as Raleigh dubs it it, brings a mix of springy responsiveness, lively handing, and unrivaled durability that those high-priced plastic bikes can only dream of achieving. Built with Shimano's workhorse 105 drivetrain and TRP mechanical disc brakes, this bike is ready to jump off the line and tackle nearly any terrain. Modern geometry gives the RXM the versatility to expand beyond the 'cross course. The 72-degree head angle, 73-degree seat angle (based on the 54cm model), and a 65mm bottom bracket make a geometry that falls neatly between traditional Euro-'cross high and road-racing low, catering well to American-style 'cross courses. Off the course, it's just as confident and composed grinding over gravel fire roads or exploring mellow singletrack. The RXM does make one admirable concession to carbon by including Raleigh's carbon fiber cross fork. Its blend of stiffness, a thru axle, and vibration dampening prowess lend an added dose of comfort and confident handling on any terrain. It's a similar blend to that found in its cobble-conquering Fenix, so you can rest assured it's capable of sopping-up fatiguing vibrations and tenaciously transferring every watt into forward motion. It's a fast yet cushy ride worthy of even the harshest race conditions. Its internal cable routing makes for a clean, streamlined look with the added bonus of eliminating pesky cable pinches when shouldering your bike. Classic European cyclocross geometry gives the X-Night SL a fast, aggressive feel while its wide tire clearance gives it the versatility to tackle everything from sloppy mud to dry grass. At the front, Ridley outfits the X-Knight SL with its Oryx Disc carbon fiber fork. It features a 12mm thru-axle for a solid, stable ride and a barely noticeable asymmetry that counters the extra torsional forces applied to the left fork leg when scrubbing speed. The dropouts include stainless steel inserts to protect the carbon from scratches and a scuff plate on the inside of the left fork leg fends off errant discs during frantic, mid-race wheel changes to keep the fork free of unwanted wear. This means more fun in the mud, and less time worrying about the integrity of your bike's front end.

Ridley X-Night SL Disc Cyclocross Frameset - 2017 Ridley X-Night SL Disc Cyclocross Frameset - 2017
We've been able to spend a lot of time on Ridley's road bikes, and we've certainly enjoyed them, but the Flemish brand's real pedigree lies in cyclocross. The brand is a Belgian staple; the sport is a Belgian obsession--the connection is a given. That means that, as Ridley's flagship 'cross model, the X-Night SL Disc Cyclocross Frameset is shaped by the traditions at the heart of European cyclocross. If you're after a gravel bike, then the X-Trail has the big footprint and borderline XC geometry you're looking for. The X-Night SL, on the other hand, is a pure Euro' 'cross, through-and-through. A cursory comparison between the X-Trail, a gravel adventure sled, and the X-Night SL proves that point. The X-Night is much more compact with a slightly steeper head tube and a drastically shorter wheelbase. It's also got a higher bottom bracket, which adds to the immediate responsiveness and makes for more generous clearance. Despite that compact footprint, the frame's generous main triangle still provides plenty of room to comfortably shoulder the bike on Belgian stairs. The classic European cyclocross geometry gives the X-Night SL a fast, aggressive feel, but it's paired with a non-traditional, wide tire clearance. This adapts it for tackling everything the New World can throw at it, ranging from snowy Northeast mud to dry West Coast dirt. As with the previous generation, Ridley builds the X-Knight SL from a mix of 30T and 24T high modulus carbon fiber. This is similar to the blend found in the cobble-stone conquering Fenix frameset ridden in Roubaix and Flanders, so it sops up fatiguing vibrations and tenaciously transfers every watt into forward motion for a fast yet cushy ride worthy of even the harshest race conditions. Its internal cable routing makes for a clean, streamlined look, with the added bonus of eliminating pesky cable pinches when shouldering your bike up a steep wall of limestone stairs. At the front, Ridley officially bestows its Belgian benediction ...

Ridley X-Ride Force 1 Complete Cyclocross Bike Ridley X-Ride Force 1 Complete Cyclocross Bike
Falling leaves and scattered rainstorms mean one thing: it's cyclocross season. You spent last autumn clanging cowbells and cheering on your friends, and this year you're jumping into the fray with Ridley's X-Ride Force 1 Complete Cyclocross Bike. Aluminum frame builds at this price point usually come outfitted with more entry level components, but Ridley goes big and outfits this X-Ride with SRAM's Force 1 drivetrain and hydraulic brakes, which can be found gracing the machines of many a pro on the international circuit. Adding in DT Swiss wheels and Clement's renowned MXP tires, this bike arrives ready to tackle all the twisting grass fields, loose sandpits, and leaf-shrouded single track the local promoter can throw your way. Ridley fashions the X-Ride from triple butted 7005-T6 alloy with seatstays carefully shaped to mop up energy-zapping vibrations out on the course. The Belgian brand also incorporates internal cable routing along the frame for crisp, clean lines that eliminate annoying cable pinches when grabbing the top tube to navigate a set of barriers or shouldering the bike for a long slog through the sand. Race-driven geometry paired with wide tire clearance means this bike is roaring to go fast, with ample clearance for mud-caked tires if the clouds roll in and you find yourself navigating a sloppy mess. The X-Ride comes outfitted with an Oryx Disc carbon fiber fork for a plush ride and a stiff, responsive front end. This fork features a barely perceptible asymmetry that counters the torsional forces applied to the left fork leg during braking to reduce flex and promote a long fork life. You'll find stainless steel inserts in the dropouts that protect the carbon from damage, and a scuff plate affixed to the inner left fork leg to fend off errant discs during hurried wheel changes and prevent gouging or scratching.

Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Cyclocross Frameset - 2017 Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Cyclocross Frameset - 2017
While rolling through the parking area of nearly any American cross race venue over the past year, we'd inevitably encounter at least one (often times many) eye-catchingly bright, ENVE-bedecked Stigmata. For 2017, Santa Cruz Bicycles brings back its standout Stigmata Carbon CC Cyclocross Frameset with updated colorways to fuel your 'cross racing and all-road dreams. Underneath the aesthetics, this version of the Stigmata sports Santa Cruz's top-shelf CC carbon lay-up, which delivers robust strength and stiffness alongside lightweight efficiency. Up front, the Stigmata CC Cyclocross Fork uses this same high-end carbon for uncompromising stiffness and strength when you need it most. A modern geometry places the Stigmata Carbon CC solidly in contention with the herd of high-end 'cross bike options, with a 72-degree head tube angle, 73. 5-degree seat tube angle (based on 56cm model), and a 69mm bottom bracket drop that falls neatly between Euro-'cross high and road-racing low and caters well to American-style cross courses. Its stable geometry also allows for versatility beyond barriers and tape fencing; it's just as confident and composed grinding out long stretches on gravel back roads or exploring light-duty singletrack. While cross racing imposes limitations on tire width, venturing off the course opens up myriad possibilities of plush. With this in mind, Santa Crux designs the Stigmata to accept tires up to 41mm in width, allowing you to drop the pressure (especially when running tubeless) for a more comfortable ride through rougher terrain. Conversely, toss on a set of skinny road tires to throw down on the local group ride or noodle through the city on a Sunday social. Thru-axles at the front and rear add poise and confidence for better tracking across rutted-out backroads and gravel-strewn surfaces. Add in the ability to accept 140 or 160mm discs, and you get a sprightly ride that also slows down in a hurry when you need it to, no matter how mucky or wet t...

Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Cyclocross Frameset - 2018 Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Cyclocross Frameset - 2018
Santa Cruz does things a bit differently than most cycling companies, especially when you consider the Northern California company spent the better part of the last decade refining their carbon fiber construction on mountain bikes before bringing this insanely stiff and durable material to the Stigmata Carbon CC Cyclocross Frameset. This means the Stigmata benefits immensely from all the research and design poured into Santa Cruz's mountain bikes, ranging from the earliest carbon Tallboy and Blur XC, all the way to their newest models, such as the iconic Hightower and 5010. Translated to cyclocross racing and adventurous gravel grinds, you'll find the Stigmata Carbon CC is lightweight without sacrificing one ounce of strength or stiffness you've come to love from Santa Cruz mountain bikes. For 2018, the Stigmata is only available in Santa Cruz's highest level Carbon CC, which means it's extremely lightweight without forgoing the incredible power transfer of carbon fiber. Santa Cruz achieves a lower frame weight by utilizing a lighter, stronger, and more expensive carbon in key areas to reduce weight without sacrificing its structural integrity or stiffness. This high-end carbon construction extends to the Stigmata's fork, which maintains stiff tracking for a precise handling bike without a noodly front end when you're riding over bumpy gravel and rutted-out courses. Modern geometry places the Stigmata Carbon CC in solid contention with the current crop of high-end 'cross bikes dominating the market. The 72-degree head tube angle, 73. 5-degree seat tube angle (based on 56-centimeter frame), and 69-millimeter bottom bracket drop fall neatly between European 'cross high and road-racing low, making it a great contender for American-style cyclocross. And even with its racy geometry cues, the Stigmata's geometry broadens its versatility beyond the cyclocross race course. In fact, it's just as confident and composed grinding down gravel roads and exploring light-duty ...

Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Force CX1 Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2017 Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Force CX1 Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2017
While the Stigmata is known for its versatility across terrain ranging from gravel to grass to smooth singletrack excursions, there's no doubt that the 2017 Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Force CX1 Complete Cyclocross Bike is also built to throw down amidst the barriers, mud, and cowbell-fueled melee that is a cyclocross race. Kitted out with SRAM's Force 1 drivetrain and hydraulic brakes, this Stigmata sacrifices the few extra gears of a double and ditches the front derailleur for single chainring simplicity and confident chain retention whether you're rocking and rolling over washboard whoops or punching up a steep flyover. This version of the Stigmata sports Santa Cruz's top-shelf CC carbon lay-up, which delivers robust strength and stiffness alongside lightweight efficiency. Up front, the Stigmata CC Cyclocross Fork uses this same high-end carbon for uncompromising stiffness and strength when you need it most. Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Rival Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2018 Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Rival Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2018
The Santa Cruz Stigmata CC Rival complete cyclocross bike may have been born on the 'cross course, but it's more than earned its stripes as one of the most coveted all-road adventure bikes available today. With a massive gear range, powerful brakes, and serious tire clearance, the Stigmata is ready to race 'cross, ride gravel, and even mix it up in your local crit series with little more than a change of tires. Although it's come to be regarded as one of the most versatile drop bar bikes to date, the Stigmata was born to do battle on a cyclocross race track. That means a few things--namely that it's built to be rugged with plenty of clearance for mud. Following the current trends in 'cross geometry, the Stigmata forgoes the high bottom bracket and relaxed head angle that once defined the genre, in favor of a lower, steeper geometric concept that's found favor in recent years. But in spite of the Stimata's intended use as a 'cross racer, the team at Santa Cruz knew that it would see plenty of use outside of the confines of course tape. To that end, the Stigmata was built to accommodate two full-size bottles in the front triangle--a feature that 'cross purists will argue is unnecessary, but which is invaluable for those taking the Stigmata in a different direction. The Stigmata has endeared itself to riders of diverse backgrounds in part because the very features that make it such a formidable steed on the 'cross course lend it serious functionality for covering ground on gravel roads, singletrack trails, and in a paceline. Although you might scoff at the idea of the Stigmata replacing a dedicated road bike, it's done precisely that for a growing number of skeptics--including several members of the Competitive family. The finely-tuned flex significantly reduces road chatter, while the massive downtube and chainstays channel your efforts to the back wheel with enthusiastic efficiency. The modern 'cross geometry is quite similar to what you'd find on a World Tour-deri..

Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Ultegra Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2017 Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Ultegra Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2017
For decades, the worlds of mountain and road bikes were intractably separated, with either discipline keeping a jealous guard on its technological sovereignty. Cyclocross has made some in-roads into this divide, but Santa Cruz's enterprising Stigmata Carbon CC Ultegra Complete Bike is the most complete ambassador between the two rival factions that we've seen to date. Nothing between road, grass, gravel, dirt, and even light singletrack are off-limits for it. The Stigmata brings together a geometry that triangulates between road, 'cross, and gravel with off-road elements like the 15 and 12x142mm thru-axles you'd expect on a full-suspension trail machine. The wheelbase is actually tighter than many of the other gravel/'cross machines coming out of manufacturers traditionally associated with mountain bikes, but it mimics them in chainstay length and head and seat tube angles. The frame's middle-road geometry recommends the Stigmata as the industry diplomat, able to cleanly transition from light off-road duty to cyclocross to the road simply by changing tires. The Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and Ultegra drivetrain are just as happy to jump between surfaces, while a list of features originally associated with road machines--including internal routing for cables and hoses, carbon dropouts and disc mounts, and electronic drivetrain compatibility--pull the bike back toward the skinny-tire camp. Whatever your application, the 27. 2 millimeter seatpost helps quiet anything from mellow washboard chatter to chipseal tarmac noise, and the tapered head tube makes for a stiff front end for efficient climbing and sprinting with sharp tracking for control when off-road terrain acts up.

Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Ultegra Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2018 Santa Cruz Bicycles Stigmata Carbon CC Ultegra Complete Cyclocross Bike - 2018
Few remember the first aluminum Stigmata that graced Santa Cruz's lineup for just four seasons starting in 2007. The Bay Area has always been a hotbed for 'cross in the US and, in much of the same spirit of the early days of mountain biking, local builders fabricated frames with more progressive 'cross geometry then what was the norm of the day. Many of the angles and tube lengths seen on those California barrier hopping bikes are reflected in the geometry of CX bikes that we see today. We were quite surprised when Santa Cruz dropped the bike from the line but figured with Santa Cruz moving many of their mountain bike frames to carbon fiber and the influx of disc brakes on CX bikes, it must have a Stigmata redux on their hands. After sitting out five cross seasons, the release of the new Stigmata represented just what we expected in a new drop bar bike from Santa Cruz: carbon fiber construction, disc brakes, and geometry versatile enough to tackle tarmac, mud bogs, and the burgeoning gravel scene. We often think of the Stigmata as the mountain biker's road bike. It's plenty capable of hanging with the shaved leg set when pedaling perfect circles and racking up base miles, but if the idea of linking up endless forest service roads while looking at a topo map, or pinning a number to a skinsuit in the fall tickles your fancy, all you need is a simple tire swap and the Stigmata is happy to oblige. Even though most of the road bikes kicking around here at Competitive Cyclist have rim brakes, we can see the benefits of disc brakes on the road and we can't fathom riding 'cross or gravel without discs. The fork's 15mm thru-axle and 12 x 142mm rear dropouts keep the axles anchored in the dropouts whether we were blurry eyed in braking bumps or shooting for the holeshot off the line. The Shimano hydraulic disc brakes and Ultegra drivetrain provide miles of trouble free use. The group is elegant and beautiful enough for road use but not afraid to kick up a little dust or...

Storck T.I.X. Pro Cyclocross Frameset - 2017 Storck T.I.X. Pro Cyclocross Frameset - 2017
By now, it's expected that a frameset emblazoned with Storck's logo is going to be ridiculously light, and the 2017 T. I. X. Pro Cyclocross Frameset is no exception. For riders looking for a unique, high end steed that can push beyond the boundaries of pavement to gravel, packed dirt, and the occasional local cross race, the T. I. X. is right up your alley. It begs to go fast, and Storck's proven stiffness-to-weight expertise makes it a bike that, with the right engine, displays remarkable energy across the challenging conditions of all-road adventuring. Storck shapes the T. I. X. Pro with carefully layered unidirectional carbon fiber to create a frame with a notably low claimed weight of just 940g. The featherweight T. I. X. frame is constructed with Storck's hallmark Directional Depending Stiffness design, which involves shaping transverse-oval tubes in a carbon layup to equip the frame to hit muddy ruts and uneven terrain without sacrificing expert handling. This balance of rigidity and comfort means the T. I. X. Pro can hold lines and absorb fatiguing chatter while maintaining a ride quality that doesn't feel painfully rigid. The T. I. X. Pro receives its own unidirectional carbon fork design as well, the Storck Pro Fork. The Pro is specifically fine-tuned to complement the frame's adept handling and enable you to take advantage of the T. I. X.'s eager acceleration without sacrificing precision. Storck does this by engineering the fork to flex when forces are applied from the trail or course, but the inclusion of a thru-axle means it won't yield under braking forces, resulting in steadfast control with some added smoothness. It's worth noting that the T. I. X. Pro utilizes a front 9 x 100mm thru-axle and rear 10 x 135mm thru-axle combination. It's a unique design choice in comparison to the more standardized 12 or 15mm front and 12 x 142mm rear combo, so you'll need to do some research on available end caps to make sure your favorite wheels are compatible ...
