Bell Endeavor Helmet - Women's Bell Endeavor Helmet - Women's
Whether you're just getting into riding or your current helmet is sweat-caked and ready to be retired, Bell's Endeavor Helmet offers lightweight, dependable protection with plenty of understated style. Bell starts with an In-Mold polycarbonate shell that's bonded to an impact-absorbing EPS body, followed by its Lightweight Kit to secure the helmet. Lightweight kit is made with a webbed material to add comfort in places where the straps sit next to your skin, and it's designed to not absorb as much sweat as traditional materials -- hopefully extending the time you have until inevitable white patches show up on your straps. The Endeavor features Bell's proprietary TAG Fit System as well, which allows you to adjust the helmet laterally and vertically so that it's truly secure in the event of a crash. Bell perforates the sleek, compact shell with 19 vents to keep you cool on your hottest, slowest climbs, and the helmet's shape was developed with Bell's Overbrow Ventilation design, which aims to direct airflow over your head and into the vents as efficiently as possible.

Bell Endeavor MIPS Helmet - Women's Bell Endeavor MIPS Helmet - Women's
Whether you're just getting into riding or your current helmet is sweat-caked and ready to be retired, Bell's Endeavor MIPS Helmet for women is a lightweight, dependable presence with plenty of understated style. Bell starts with an In-Mold shell that bonds polycarbonate to an impact-absorbing EPS body and finishes with its Lightweight Kit fastening straps, which use a webbed material that sits more comfortably next to your skin and isn't as prone to absorbing sweat as traditional materials--hopefully making your dog less apt to use your helmet as a salt lick when not in use. The Endeavor features Bell's proprietary TAG Fit System as well, which allows you to adjust the helmet laterally and vertically so that it's truly secure in the event of a crash. In addition to a secure fit, you'll also benefit from MIPS technology. MIPS, or Multi-Directional Impact Protection System, appears in the Endeavor in the form of a thin liner that's designed to rotate slightly upon impact to absorb rotational energy generated by certain crashes. Bell perforates the sleek, compact shell with 19 vents to keep you cool on your hottest, slowest climbs, and it developed the helmet's shape with Bell's Overbrow Ventilation design, which directs airflow over your head whether you're riding into the wind or not, ferrying even the slightest cooling breeze into the vents as efficiently as possible.

Bell Gage MIPS Helmet Bell Gage MIPS Helmet
Bell's Gage MIPS Helmet takes the same professional-grade formula of the original Gage and makes one key addition: the revolutionary Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS). Though you're likely familiar with it by now, we think it's worth briefly running through MIPS' function and benefits. MIPS consists of a strategically anchored liner that moves independently of the helmet's shell. When the shell suffers an oblique impact, MIPS allows it to slide across your head, diffusing the impact force applied to your brain by redirecting it. Besides the addition of MIPS, the Gage remains largely unchanged. It's still based on the CPSC-certified Fusion In-Mold Microshell, which involves bonding an EPS foam body to the helmet's shell for increased structural integrity, and it uses the same two-way adjustable Twin Axis Gear fit system to ensure that the helmet's protective measures are in place when you need them. The Gage is finished with a complement of X-Static padding, a quick-dry material with an antimicrobial coating that helps eliminate odor.

Bell Star Pro Helmet Bell Star Pro Helmet
When it comes to the final sprint, every advantage matters. The Bell Star Pro Helmet, while appearing to be just another well-vented helmet, is actually a stealth aero helmet designed to slice through the wind when every second counts. The Bell Star Pro was essentially designed as a wind tunnel. The front vents, which use Bell's Active Aero, pull air through to keep your head cool, but when needed, are switched closed to move air around the helmet. The Overbrow ventilation features a gap between the brow and the helmet, which forces air into the airflow channels that have been designed on the underside of the shell. This effectively cools your head, even when the Active Aero is engaged. To further the aerodynamics of the Star Pro, the straps feature Bell's new lay-flat Cinch system that engages the FloatFit adjustment. The helmet is constructed using Progressive Layering, which uses softer EPS foam at the inner sections and harder EPS at the outer sections. This progression allows the helmet to absorb impact from the outside while protecting your head from the inside.

Bell Star Pro Helmet with Shield Bell Star Pro Helmet with Shield
If you're looking for a ridiculously aerodynamic helmet that also keeps your head cool, your search stops with the Bell Star Pro Helmet with Shield. This helmet blew away the competition in wind tunnel testing, earning the nod as one of the most aerodynamic helmets out there that isn't a pointy-hat time trial helmet. The Star Pro comes with 15 vents designed to channel cooling air around your head while you ride. Its Active Aero ventilation system also lets you block and unblock the vents at the front of the helmet to adjust how much air gets through. Opt for closed vents when you want to eke out every second in a race, and open them up for better temperature regulation on training rides. A tinted Zeiss Shield visor magnetically attaches to the helmet to round out its sleek, wind-cutting profile and protect your eyes from any bugs or debris. Bell even makes sure this helmet is comfy while it slices through the air. A new Cinch system keeps all the straps neatly in place, and the FloatFit adjustment options ensure the Star Pro Helmet with Shield stays securely and comfortably in place as you fly down the road.

Bell Stratus MIPS Helmet Bell Stratus MIPS Helmet
The videos of an angry peloton delaying race starts in protest of helmet rules seem a little ridiculous now, but we're sure the reaction would have been different had Bell's Stratus MIPS Helmet been around back then. Its lightweight and cooling design borrows inspiration from the top-tier Zephyr and incorporates MIPS technology for an appropriately cloud-like personality that nearly disappears from notice during rides. You'll kit up quickly with easy, multi-directional adjustability and comfort that lets you focus on the snacks in your pocket and the road ahead. When the weather warms up and caps are collecting dust at home, the durable shell's massive vents and matrix of air channels collaborate to regulate temperature with cooling breezes across your dome. All that airflow won't slow you down though, as the Stratus' streamlined shell shape is well suited for weekend races and long, scenic adventures alike.

Catlike Mixino Helmet - Men's Catlike Mixino Helmet - Men's
The first thing you notice when looking at the Catlike Mixino, or any other Catlike helmet, really, is the completely unconventional shell and vent layout. Buried inside that shell, though, is where the real magic sits. Keeping your head protected is always priority number one for a helmet, with keeping your head cool a close second. Catlike forms the Mixino around an Aramid cage it calls the Crash Energy Splitter, which does just what it says. In the event of a crash, the cage is designed to maintain the helmet's structural integrity by dispersing the energy throughout. In addition, Catlike extended the protection for the back of your head beyond what many other manufacturers offer, and it's integrated what it calls MPS eVo, a micro-adjusting fit system that ensures a proper helmet fit. And about that keeping cool priority --Catlike's got that one covered with 39 individual vents, and airflow channels with rear-facing exhaust ports to keep air moving the right direction.

Giro Air Attack Helmet Giro Air Attack Helmet
We all know that traditional aero helmets serve a very specific function -- even if, they're a bit cumbersome and a tad silly looking. With the new Air Attack Helmet, Giro's engineers have rethought the traditional aero helmet to provide a design that is more compact, better ventilated, and that can be worn for longer periods of time. Giro gave the frontal area of the Air Attack a nearly identical design as the Selector time trail helmet, but "chopped-off" the rear section to save weight. The Air Attack has slimmed down to a claimed weight of 264g. After extensive wind tunnel testing, Giro found that air still moves over the back of the helmet in much of same way even without the material of a long tail. In fact, the Air Attack has only 11% more minimal drag than the Selector. In addition to creating a lighter helmet, Giro's engineer's improved the ventilation of the Air Attack with the Super Fit system. Giro found that as air hits the rider, a very high pressure zone develops at the forehead. Super Fit suspends the rider's head off the EPS, allowing air to enter in the front portion of the helmet and flow over the top of the head and out the large, strategically arranged back channels. The result is an almost 28% increase in cooling power, providing you with around 97% cooling efficiency. This, mind you, is in addition to the 11% boost in aerodynamic efficiency. Losing a tail, sometimes, isn't all that bad.

Giro Cinder MIPS Helmet Giro Cinder MIPS Helmet
You don't have a full race calendar or a spot on the local cycling team, so gear should be more about function than style. Open, empty roads and long sojourns on Sunday afternoons are where you find your joy in cycling, and gear that helps you stay out longer always ends up being what you reach for first. The Giro Cinder MIPS Helmet fits that description aptly, so if your old lid has seen better days, protect your grey matter and stick to your principles by upgrading. Inspired by the competition-minded Synthe, the Cinder shares more than just a similar sounding name with its pricier sibling. Giro anchors the Cinder with a streamlined, aerodynamic shell much like the Synthe's, and ensures it maintains ample airflow out on the roads by carving 26 vents into its shell. Its light, unfussy design succeeds just as well in weekend fondos as it does on weeknight group rides, while inside the helmet, a MIPS liner adds subtle, but important protection. MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers to the Swedish technology that appears in the form of a thin inner basket, which rotates upon impact to absorb brain-damaging rotational energy generated in certain crashes. The fifth version of Giro's tried-and-true Roc Loc 5 fit system makes lateral and vertical fit adjustments easy to do with one hand, while Air-Fix padding and a ponytail-compatible design give the Cinder an adaptable, versatile fit.

Giro Ember MIPS Helmet - Women's Giro Ember MIPS Helmet - Women's
If rolling hills, small country lakes, and wide open spaces are what get you out the door when it's time to ride far more than splits, course records, and training plans, the Ember MIPS was made for you. Based on the design of Giro's pricier Synthe helmet, the Ember caters to those who demand functionality from their gear, without strict constraints on weight or budget. MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers the a thin basket added to the helmet's interior that moves slightly upon impact to absorb some of the brain-damaging rotational energy generated in certain crashes. Together, MIPS and the Ember's In-Mold polycarbonate shell back up your brain in the event of a crash, without weighing you down during the majority of the time when you're safely upright. One-handed fit adjustment and a ponytail-compatible design ensure you're able to secure the fit you want without wasting valuable ride time, and a strategic arrangement of 26 vents keep air moving continuously throughout the helmet to prevent overheating. Plus, the Ember's aesthetics purposely match Giro's 2017 apparel collection, so if you're into coordinating, you're in the right place.

Giro Foray MIPS Helmet Giro Foray MIPS Helmet
The rising popularity of helmets such as Giro's Air Attack and Synthe, shown to reduce drag by up to 14% in the right conditions, shines a spotlight on the shift in attention towards aerodynamics in every piece of cycling kit. For those of us who can't quite stomach the cost of those top-end lids, Giro brings us the Foray MIPS Helmet with trickle down aerodynamic technology and industry-leading Multi-directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) design at a much more palatable price point. The big news with MIPS technology is its ability to diffuse certain impact forces in the event of a crash. MIPS comprises a strategically anchored, thin liner on the inside of the helmet that looks exceptionally simple, but serves a big purpose. That little liner is designed to move independently of the helmet shell and reduce impact force compared to standard, non-MIPS helmets. While the Foray isn't quite as light, as breathable, or as slippery in the wind as the Synthe, it utilizes many of the same technologies in both materials and manufacturing as it's more expensive sibling. It's made with Giro's In-Mold construction, a technique that effectively unifies the helmet's EPS foam liner to a polycarbonate shell, as opposed to simply adhering the two together, creating a lighter, stronger structure. The helmet also follows Giro's Streamlined Design philosophy, allowing slick style to permeate the functional aerodynamic shape that dictates the helmet's efficiency. Finally, the Roc Loc 5 retention system dials in the proper fit to your head, comfortably and easily, while still being up to 40% lighter than competing systems.

Giro Savant MIPS Helmet Giro Savant MIPS Helmet
There is no guarantee you'll never crash. But wearing a helmet designed with the utmost attention to detail is a way to fight back against impacts. And speaking of fighting, the Giro Savant was developed using head impact studies from boxing to inform its design. A collaboration between Giro and MIPS, the Savant is designed to work with your body's natural defense system. The protective layers of your head are able to move laterally to absorb and diffuse impact. In a similar manner, the shell of the Savant doesn't just absorb impact energy, it is able to slide and redirect the force across a larger area. It works much like the sliding action of tectonic plates. The Savant uses Giro's In-mold construction, which fuses a layer of polycarbonate to the EPS foam body, keeping the helmet light on your head. Twenty-five vents and internal air channels allow airflow throughout the helmet to keep your head cool. To secure the Savant to your head, Giro uses the Roc Loc 5 with a ratcheting dial and both fore and aft adjustability

Giro Silo Helmet Giro Silo Helmet
If you've ever given much thought to what happens to a helmet after you throw it away -- worriedly wondering if it's destined for a recycling plant or a landfill after its straps become too inundated with sweat to be saved or a crash forces it into early retirement -- you'll be able to sleep a little easier wearing Giro's Silo Helmet. Made with a biodegradable liner in the style of a sleek urban commuter helmet, it will protect your head as well as a traditionally-constructed helmet while delivering a reassuring dose of environmental responsibility. Starting with an ABS shell to form the Silo's outer layer, Giro replaces the traditional EPS foam body with Expanded Polylactic Acid (E-PLA), a compound exclusive to Giro that's composed of plant biomass. It absorbs impact in the same way as EPS, so you won't be sacrificing safety for sustainability. Giro also uses eco-conscious coconut fiber to construct the webbing and includes adjustable Fit Kit padding and eight vents in the Silo's shell to ensure it stays comfortable and breathable during morning commutes and afternoon jaunts around town. Best of all, when the Silo reaches the end of its lifespan, you don't ever have to say goodbye -- the liner and straps can be safely added to your backyard compost pile to create nutrient-rich soil for next summer's flowers while the rest of the helmet heads to the recycling bin.

Giro Sonnet Helmet - Women's Giro Sonnet Helmet - Women's
Giro focused on comfort, ventilation, and value when it designed the Sonnet Women's helmet. The low-profile design keeps the weight down and reduces the spaceman appearance that large, bulky helmets can give you. More importantly, however, Giro built the Sonnet with 25 large vents and its Roc Loc 5 fit system for all-day comfort. For the construction of the Sonnet, Giro starts with in-mold technology. This makes it possible to give the Sonnet a low profile with plenty of ventilation. Giro opted for its Roc Loc 5 ratcheting, micro-adjustable retention system. The system allows the wearer to adjust both the helmet's tightness and vertical position with one hand, so you can fine tune the fit in the saddle.

Giro Sonnet MIPS Helmet - Women's Giro Sonnet MIPS Helmet - Women's
You've probably seen the MIPS name everywhere -it's certainly taken bike helmets by storm, but what is it' MIPS is a technology that does its best to protect your brain by mimicking what the brain does to protect itself. Namely, MIPS aims to mimic the cerebrospinal fluid that allows the skull and the brain to move independently. This synthetic buffer, as applied in the Giro Sonnet Helmet seen here, allows the shell and the EPS foam to move independently in the event of a tangential force. It essentially redirects the impact in such a manner that it should do a better job in preventing catastrophic brain injuries. Outside of the MIPS tech, the Sonnet is everything you'd expect from Giro -light, breathable, well-fitting, and incredibly comfortable.

The stylish low-profile design of Giro's Sutton MIPS Helmet is perfect for urban cyclists and dirt jumpers who want to look on-point, but also demand high-tech protection. The Sutton is built with a polystyrene liner and uses an in-molded polycarbonate shell for added strength and weight savings. The Sutton has eight vents to keep your head cool, and is lighter than most ABS-shelled helmets of this style. Giro Synthe Helmet Giro Synthe Helmet
An aerodynamic road helmet, designed for all-day wear, that doesn't have any ventilation doesn't seem like much of an all-day option to us. Sure, cooking your brains for an hour or so in a 40k TT, or a middle-distance triathlon seems acceptable, but when your races stretch out to multiple hours, you'd give just about anything to feel the slightest gust of wind in your hair. But, the drag reduction (read: free speed) that you get from an aero helmet almost outweighs the suffering. Until now. Giro's new Synthe was designed to take what was great about its Air Attack and make it a more comfortable option for long, hot races. The quite-well-ventilated Synthe produces a single drag value from any one of 72 different wind angles, meaning that whether you're facing a headwind, crosswind, or anything in between, your helmet won't make any extra drag (think about what classic, long-tailed aero helmets do in crosswinds), thanks to the use of Aero Mesh Panels, which mimic a flat surface while still allowing heat to escape.

Giro Synthe MIPS Helmet Giro Synthe MIPS Helmet
A classic choice for the riders in the pro peloton and self-sponsored cyclists alike, the Giro Synthe MIPS Helmet blends lightness, ventilation, and now MIPS protection to only further solidify its beloved status amongst the Lycra set. One of the major characteristics setting the Synthe MIPS apart from other similar models is the safety of MIPS; MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers to the Swedish technology added to the helmet in the form of a thin inner layer that rotates slightly upon impact to absorb the brain-damaging rotational energy created in certain crashes. With less rotation comes less likelihood of a brain injury when you take a spill. Impact protection is usually a feature of helmets you'd rather not put to the test, however, and it's far from the only one that's important. When you're out on a ride, the Synthe's iconic aerodynamic shaping helps reduce drag in the wind, while 19 airy vents work with Aero Mesh Panels to strategically usher air across your head to let heat continuously escape. Giro's Roc Loc Air adjustment system makes fine-tuning the fit of the helmet before a ride quick and easy, so you can make adjustments in the driveway without taking up valuable ride time. When you finish your ride and head to the coffee shop, use the eyewear docking ports to safely perch your pricey sunnies and avoid having them fly off your helmet when you turn your head -- it's just another thoughtful touch of many that have helped earned the MIPS its respected reputation.

Giro Synthe MIPS Limited Edition Helmet Giro Synthe MIPS Limited Edition Helmet
Few helmet profiles are as closely associated with certain teams and organizations as Giro's Synthe. The Synthe MIPS Limited Edition Helmet is a celebration of those associations, and it spans the cycling world from fixie to 11-speed electronic, depending on the colorway. Regardless of what's on the outside, though, it's what's inside that counts. Specifically, the Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) basket, which adds some 21st century tech to a sport whose passion often derives from the romance of its 18th century beginnings. The big draw with MIPS is its ability to diffuse oblique impact force in the event of certain crashes. MIPS consists primarily of a strategically anchored, thin liner on the inside of the helmet that looks exceptionally simple but serves a rather complex purpose. That little liner is designed to move independently of the helmet shell to essentially redirect impacts that standard, non-MIPS helmets have to address head-on. On the outside, the Synthe retains all the awesome features that made its non-MIPS predecessor so well-loved in the peloton and the local circuit. Wind tunnel testing shows that it's more aerodynamic than the ultralight Aeon, while giant vents and Aero Mesh Panels funnel air across your dome for a massive cooling effect--a rare combination of fast and comfy. Giro uses Featherweight Webbing straps with a Slimline buckle to hold the Synthe MIPS firmly in place without any of the pesky irritation or distractions that can plague thicker strapped helmets with bulky closure systems. The Roc Loc Air fit system features two-way fit tuning that's easily adjustable on the fly and is ponytail-compatible, making this helmet extra convenient for those of us with long hair. Giro even integrates eyewear docking ports into the Aero Mesh Panels for safe storage of your favorite sunglasses when the clouds come out to play.

Known for their bikes, the Belgians are not to be left out of the accessories market. The Lazer Z1 Helmet is a step above its Helium and Genesis designs with more protection in a lighter design. The shape of the Z1 moves the shell of the helmet down across the temple zone at the sides of your head for added impact protection. This T-Pro design uses Lazer's RBS design (rigidity brace system) to hold the shell together in the event of impact to further increase protection to your noggin. At the same time, the front sweeps back up to allow for a full range of vision. More protection has no benefit with a poor fit, which is why Lazer uses its Advanced Rollsys Adjustment System to ensure that the helmet wraps your head with equal tension from all sides and culminates in a vertically adjustable cradle at the back of your head. The chin strap is adjustable to provide a secure fit as well as comfort.

Lazer Z1 Lifebeam DIY Kit Lazer Z1 Lifebeam DIY Kit
Heart rate straps have historically been a somewhat aggravating way to gather heart rate data, what with their constricting tightness, uncomfortable sensors, and uncanny ability to migrate position in the least opportune moments of a ride. While recent developments in wrist-based optical sensors give a bit of relief, watches aren't the easiest to view when you're in the saddle and present an additional tan line in the already comical array of glove, jersey, sock, and short lines we deal with on the daily. Now, Lazer teams up with Lifebeam to bring you strap-free, tan-line free heart rate tracking tucked neatly into your Z1 helmet with the Lazer Z1 Lifebeam DIY Kit.Originating from its work in the aerospace realm, Lifebeam's optical sensor comes with claims of all-weather durability and exceptional resistance to motion for accurate data tracking through even the most extreme conditions. The small sensor comes tucked neatly into a pad that replaces the front pad on your current Z1 helmet, and utilizes ANT+ and Bluetooth 4. 0 protocols to transmit heart rate information to your compatible head unit or tracking app. The one catch is that the sensor needs direct skin contact to measure your heart rate, so you'll have to leave traditional cycling caps and full-coverage beanies at home. The sensor is wired to a transmitter that sits at the back of the helmet, held in place by a mount that Lazer refers to as the "mudcap". The transmitter can be powered on and off with a quick click of a button and features LED lights to indicate statues. It contains a battery with a claimed 17 hours of active run time, which is rechargeable via an included USB charging cable.

Lazer Z1 Lifebeam Helmet Lazer Z1 Lifebeam Helmet
The Lazer Z1 Lifebeam Helmet has two very large plusses going for it. First, the Z1 is probably the most "Euro" helmet in our catalog. Second, we're shipping it as a package that includes the Z1 and an integrated Lifebeam heart rate monitor. We can't really support claims for the helmet's Euro-ness with any empirical evidence (it just feels Euro), but the included sensor system is backed by partner-company Lifebeam's pedigree in keeping tabs on vital signs. Since this pedigree involves monitoring jet pilots and astronauts experiencing stress levels that are often literally out of this world, the company is more than capable of handling the relatively modest hardships of a bike race. Lifebeam builds its optical heart rate sensor into a Z1 forehead pad, so it integrates cleanly with Lazer's peloton-proven, top-tier racing helmet. The sensor does require skin contact, so any headwear that comes between your brow and the helmet's padding array would also interfere with monitoring. A transmitter out back communicates the sensor's findings from head to head unit via Bluetooth 4. 0 and ANT+--the ubiquity of which means it's likely compatible with your current cockpit brain. As mentioned above, the helmet itself is Lazer's peloton-grade model, and it's seen plenty of stage wins atop the heads of Lotto Soudal's climbers and sprinters alike, proving that it's an all-purpose model in the increasingly specialized field of cycling helmets. The generous vents and classic ABS/polycarbonate shell construction strike the standard notes of low weight and high ventilation that we expect from a helmet. Lazer's Rigidity Brace System (RBS), Advance Rollsys System (ARS), and T-Pro design ensure that those qualities don't come with a tax on the helmet's protective abilities. RBS is the helmet equivalent of a roll cage, and the T-Pro design extends that protection to your temples without obstructing your field of vision while you're tucked in on long descents. You know, the descents we...

Lazer Z1 MIPS Helmet Lazer Z1 MIPS Helmet
The designers across the pond at Lazer have shown they aren't afraid to resist trends and trust to their own innovative designs when creating high-end road racing helmets. If you're looking for a race-pedigreed lid to protect your cognitive functions as you fly around tight corners and bump elbows in your next criterium, but don't want to be confused for a time trialist or triathlete in an aero helmet, invest in Lazer's Z1 MIPS Helmet. The classic design will protect your head while giving you ventilation at a wide range of speeds from its 31 well-placed vents. Not satisfied with the protection offered by traditional helmet shapes, Lazer updated the Z1 to include more coverage at the temples in the event of a crash, and it also added side-angle impact protection in the form of MIPS. MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers to the Swedish technology added to the helmet in the form of a barely-perceptible inner basket. It's designed to move slightly upon impact to absorb the brain-damaging rotational energy generated by side impacts. Before you ride, use Lazer's Advanced Rollsys retention system to secure the helmet in place so it won't slide around or pinch, or to make easy on-the-go fit adjustments as you ride, and when the weather turns cooler, attach Lazer's aeroshell to the outside of the helmet to help conserve heat when you don't want the vents doing their job quite so well.

Lazer Z1 MIPS Lifebeam Helmet Lazer Z1 MIPS Lifebeam Helmet
Despite the fact that it's accompanied Lotto Soudal's sprinting Gorilla in a victory on the Champs-Eysees, the Z1 isn't your typical aerodynamic road helmet. Instead, it's got perhaps the most traditional silhouette still being worn in the peloton. Still, the Lazer Z1 MIPS Lifebeam Helmet's inclusion of Multi-Directional Impact Protection System (MIPS) and an optical heart rate monitor means it's anything but purely traditional--though we wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the tradition of the future. A helmet's primary job is to handle crashes, though, and MIPS is a Swedish technology added to the helmet in the form of an inner basket that rotates slightly upon impact to diffuse the rotational energy created when the helmet takes a hit at oblique angles. We did mention that the helmet is traditional, and the generous vents and classic ABS/polycarbonate shell construction strike the standard notes of low weight and high ventilation that we expect from a helmet. Lazer's Rigidity Brace System (RBS), Advance Rollsys System (ARS), and T-Pro design ensure that those qualities don't come with a tax on the helmet's protective abilities. Louis Garneau Course Helmet Louis Garneau Course Helmet
When Louis Garneau set about designing an aero helmet, they didn't forget the most important thing -air. As in, the air has to move over your head to keep you cool so that you can actually continue to ride hard enough to take advantage of aerodynamics. The Course Helmet is the result. It's no slouch in the wind tunnel, but much more importantly, it's a very comfortable helmet to wear, even on long rides, and even in the middle of summer.

Louis Garneau Heros MIPS RTR Helmet Louis Garneau Heros MIPS RTR Helmet
A lightweight, versatile design and easy adjustment meet the protection of MIPS in Louis Garneau's versatile Heros MIPS RTR Helmet, which is equally at home training on the roads or protecting you throughout the tense miles of a race. Garneau relies on tried-and-true In-Mold construction to shape the Heros MIPS, fusing together a layer of EPS foam to a hard composite shell for protection without bulk. Within this shell sits an additional inner liner that Garneau names Super MSB, which is essentially another frame serving to reinforce the helmet in the event of a crash. These inner liners work with the 22 vents that Garneau carved into the Heros MIPS' shell to facilitate airflow without sacrificing structural integrity. We're happy to see Garneau adopting MIPS technology, including it as the innermost layer of the Heros. MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers to Swedish technology added to the helmet in the form of a thin inner liner that rotates slightly upon impact to absorb the brain-damaging rotational energy created in certain crashes. To make sure you're able to take advantage of the helmet's safety features, Garneau includes its Spiderlock 4D adjustment system, allowing you to adjust the width and height of the helmet for your head to achieve as secure of a fit as possible. Plush X-Static removable antimicrobial padding and adjustable straps round out the Heros MIPS RTR's adaptable, aerodynamic design.

Louis Garneau Heros RTR Helmet Louis Garneau Heros RTR Helmet
Blending a light, streamlined shape with road-ready protection, Louis Garneau's Heros RTR Helmet makes an enviable upgrade to your road kit for the coming season. Starting with In-Mold construction, Garneau fuses an outer shell to an EPS foam inner layer, creating a one-piece barrier with greater structural integrity. In-Mold construction is nothing new in helmet design, but Garneau sets the Heros RTR apart from similar offerings by adding proprietary technology to it. This includes its Super MSB, an additional, reinforcing ring that strengthens the helmet's perimeter and makes it less vulnerable when experiencing impact. Super MSB pairs with a secondary inner nerve with the same goal, establishing a sound structure on the inside and outside of the helmet in the event of a crash. Since you'll be spending the duration of every ride in this helmet, save for a few races when you switch to an aero helmet perhaps, we'd argue that comfort is almost as important as safety. Thankfully, Garneau agrees with us, and it carved out space for 22 vents in the Heros RTR to keep cooling air moving through the helmet as you ride. A helmet won't be protect to the best of its ability if it doesn't properly fit your head, and on the Heros RTR, Garneau's Spiderlock 4D fit system uses a durable round dial and flexible plastic cage to allow you to make as many micro-adjustments as you need to get a secure fit without feeling restricted. Adjustable straps and removable X-Static anti-odor padding round out the comfort features of the Herso RTR, and as one last thought towards safety, Garneau prints the entire bottom half of the helmet with reflective ink to keep you visible on the road at all hours.

Louis Garneau Quartz II Helmet Louis Garneau Quartz II Helmet
Weighing just over 8. 8-ounces and featuring 33 oversized vents with moisture evacuation channels, the Louis Garneau Quartz II Helmet offers ultra-light, incredibly airy protection from nasty spills on the road. Its Super MSB technology places ring-shaped plastic along the base of the helmet to reinforce its perimeter in the case of a heavy impact. The lightweight composite skeleton provides extra structural support upon impact. Further shielding your noggin from heavy blows, you'll find the helmet's In-Mold construction fuses the polycarbonate outer shell to a foam liner for impact-absorbing protection. X-Static XT2 antimicrobial padding dries quickly and resists funky odor build-up when you're sweating profusely. The Spiderlock Pro II closure system stabilizes the helmet without causing pressure points or uncomfortable bunching. Plus, it quickly tightens with the simple spin of a dial for easy on and off. Louis Garneau Sharp Helmet Louis Garneau Sharp Helmet
They say running with sharp objects is unsafe, but what about riding with the Louis Garneau Sharp Helmet' Experts agree that it's more than OK to push the pedals around with the Sharp on your noggin, because its U-Bar exoskeleton and Super MSB shock ring distribute crash impacts throughout the entire helmet, so forces aren't concentrated at the point of impact. High-quality impact protection is also dependent on fit, though, so Garneau hooked the Sharp up with a Spiderlock SL2 fit adjustment system, which gives you a snug, comfortable fit with the twist of a dial, no matter the weird shape of your head. 22 vents help keep your grey matter cool and comfortable, and the removable visor shields your eyes from sun and rain, unless you prefer to take it off for a more classic road look.

Louis Garneau Shine MIPS Cycling Helmet Louis Garneau Shine MIPS Cycling Helmet
True to its luminous name, the Louis Garneau Shine MIPS Cycling Helmet is a standout piece thanks to a reflective treatment that's key for riding safely during dawn and dusk hours. As part of LG's Reclaim the Road collection, its reflective ink shines brilliantly on the road. This makes you easy to spot, so traffic can safely navigate around you in low-light and dark hours. Hopefully this reflective treatment means you'll never have to put the helmet's crash-absorbing ability to the test caused by a vehicle running you off the road. Speaking of its ability to disperse impact, the Shine MIPS features In-Mold construction, which pairs a tough polycarbonate shell with impact-dispersing EPS foam. This makes it both lightweight and comfortable, yet reliably tough in the event of a catastrophic crash. It's upgraded with the protection of MIPS, which reduces rotational forces when you hit the pavement at an oblique angle. This technology employs an elastomeric liner that creates a subtle slip plane, helping to disperse damaging rotational forces. Not only is the Shine MIPS brilliantly reflective and reliably protective, but it's also sculpted with 22 large vents that reduce the likelihood of overheating in sweltering heat. Complementing this enhanced breathability, the X-Static liner wicks sweat and prevents funky build-up with an anti-odor treatment. To ensure security, the Spiderlock 4D-adjustment system fine-tunes the helmet both laterally and vertically for a customized fit and feel.

Louis Garneau Shine Rtr Louis Garneau Shine Rtr
Louis Garneau created the Shine Rtr helmet specifically for women, and its lightweight, aerodynamic design and effective safety features make it an excellent choice for an everyday helmet. If your old helmet has seen more than its fair share of bumps and scrapes, and your straps have been permanently white for a while now, upgrade to the Shine Rtr to keep your head comfortable and protected as you head outside to log your weekly miles. Weighing in at a claimed 260g, the Shine Rtr relies on streamlined, In-Mold construction to provide an outer and inner layer of protection against impact without feeling bulky, and Garneau includes its antimicrobial X-Static XT2 padding to add breathable comfort to the inside of the helmet. At the back of the shell, the helmet converges towards an inner ring that Garneau refers to as Ringlock, a sleek design we're seeing more and more of from helmet manufacturers that works to preserve the helmet's structure in the event of a crash. Garneau also adds reinforcement to the lightweight shell with a supportive inner frame which works with Super MSB technology to prepare the base of the helmet to protect vulnerable areas while withstanding impacts. Of course, the best way to prevent a head injury is to prevent a collision in the first place, and the Shine is strategically embellished with reflective ink in order to attract the attention of other road users and--hopefully--keep your ride free of any unfortunate events. The reflective details are part of LG's #ReclaimTheRoad (RTR) initiative, which is dedicated to cyclists' safety during low-light hours. Gratuitous use of social media forms aside, this is an idea that we can definitely get behind. Or under, as is the case with the Shine RTR Helmet. The Shine Rtr has its share of safety features, but Garneau made sure to devote some attention to fit and comfort while creating it. Mavic Aksium Elite Helmet Mavic Aksium Elite Helmet
Mavic's Aksium wheels have always impressed us. For the money, we're hard-pressed to find any other wheels equal to the abuse that we actually throw at training wheels, year after year, spring after spring. Given that it bears the same name, we know we shouldn't be surprised by the Aksium Elite Helmet's versatility and low weight, but what we still are. The helmet incorporates several of the features that set apart Mavic's more expensive helmets. The exhaustive cranial mapping, the Elite Fit Pad, The Ergo Hold Retention System -- all are present here. The Aksium Elite does have one big omission when compared to the Ksyrium Elite, though: 25g of claimed weight. In a rare coup for the Aksium name, the helmet manages to outpace its Ksyrium counterpart on the scale. We suspect the weight difference owes to the Ksyrium model's more aggressive aerodynamic shaping, but anyone strapping the Aksium Elite on at the bottom of an alpine climb will appreciate those missing grams.

Lightweight and comfortable, the Mavic Aksium Elite Helmet for women will happily join you on your next ride whether you're crushing personal records up winding mountain climbs or enjoying a relaxing ride on a scenic byway through vineyards. The Aksium name has been well known for quite some time with Mavic's Aksium wheelsets, which pack an impressive ride into their price tag, so we're not entirely shocked by the Aksium helmet's quality-to-price ratio. A combination of high end features from Mavic's pricier helmets and shaved weight make this a spectacular option for riders of many different varieties. Though it comes at a lower price than its higher end helmets, Mavic packs a multitude of high-end features into the Aksium Elite that were missing from the more basic Aksium helmet before. Improved vent placement helps to keep you cool while hammering up climbs in the heat, and the Elite Fit Pad not only increases padding, but it also helps absorb sweat to keep it out of your eyes. Together these improve both fit and comfort while riding. The shell has morphed into a more aerodynamic profile than the Aksium, but not quite as aerodynamic as the Ksyrium--but that's actually a blessing in terms of grams. Without the addition of more materials to the helmet for aerodynamic shaping, Mavic is able to deliver the Aksium Elite with a claimed weight 25g lighter than the Ksyrium lid. The Ergo Hold SL retention system offers incredible fit adjustability, and while we can't guarantee that it will fit flawlessly for every rider who gives it a shot, we're quite confident that with multi-directional adjustability it'll provide more than adequate comfort for most riders. Finally your focus can shift away from the painful pressure points in your helmet and forward to the light that dances through the oak trees arcing around the road as you climb through a tunnel of vivid colors this autumn.

Mavic Syncro Helmet Mavic Syncro Helmet
The Mavic Syncro Helmet is the perfect option for anyone who wants a high quality helmet that's ready for all situations, but doesn't break the bank. Though the Syncro is on the entry-level of the Mavic options, you will never feel like you are getting any less of a helmet, especially when it comes to comfort. Mavic has lavished the same technology on the Syncro as it has its Plasma and Plasma SLR. They conducted cranial mapping tests to make sure that their helmet shapes closely match typical head shapes with pressure points and contours identified and accounted for. The interior shape of the helmet consequently flows along with the curves of the skull. Since heads are still all fundamentally unique, Mavic added the Ergo Hold System, which allows for as much as 6 centimeters of one-handed, on-the-fly size adjustment. For the final touches on fit perfection, as well as excellent moisture management, Mavic has included their Ergo Fit Pro Pad. It might not seem like much when you look at it, but the Ergo Fit Pro Pad is a low-density open cell foam that wicks water from the skin and transports it to where it can evaporate quickly. Mavic then took a hard look at what they could do for the exterior of the helmet. First, they fashioned a sleek profile that has a low volume construction to reduce weight. And with the thoughtful nod to those of you who will be using this helmet on the trails, Mavic has included a removable lightweight visor and plugs. The Mavic Syncro Helmet has been kitted out with reflective highlights to give you that extra level of protection in case you are caught out after dark. It is available in Black/Red, Dark Silver Metallic and White Pearl. The Syncro comes in a Small, Medium or Large option. POC Octal AVIP MIPS Helmet POC Octal AVIP MIPS Helmet
The POC Octal AVIP MIPS Helmet is more than just a bundle of Swedish design and multilingual acronyms--it's designed to keep you protected and comfortable so you have one less thing to think about while you're riding your bike. The secret to the Octal's airiness is pretty obvious; just take a quick look at the size of those vents. Rather than peppering the shell with a bunch of little vents, the engineers at POC realized they could create a helmet that was just as protective with less material, and the Octal was born. MIPS, put simply, is a system that allows the shell of the helmet to move independently from the protective liner, which can help reduce the severity of an angled impact (like most impacts you'd expect to have on a bicycle). It functions in the same way as the brain/cranium does in the human body, with a protective, mobile layer between the two.

POC flips this paradigm on its head a bit by offering a helmet designed for the special rigors of bike racing. The Octal AVIP Helmet has high-visibility, and emergency identification features, but the Raceday forgoes those, under the assumption that you'll be racing in an area free of cars, and where your emergency contact info will be lodged with the organizers. In addition, the Raceday provides a bit more coverage, extending down the low-back of the head more than the AVIP does, in anticipation of the possibility of more frequent crashes while racing. The POC Raceday also features a low-profile click wheel for adjustment, and POC's Eye Garage for keeping your sunnies perched solidly on your helmet when they're not in use.

Scott Cadence Plus Helmet Scott Cadence Plus Helmet
You've ridden cadence-based workouts, suffered through miserable interval sets, and done repeats on every hill in a 50-mile radius of your house. You're ready for your summer race calendar. Before you sit back and relax into a few taper days, take inventory of your helmet. If it's been a loyal training companion since before racing crossed your mind, then it's probably time to think about an upgrade. Show up to the start line in the Scott Cadence Plus Helmet and make sure your lid is helping, not hurting your chances of staying in front of the pack. As an aero helmet, the Cadence Plus was built to efficiently usher air over you as you race with as little resistance as possible, so while it does include some venting, coolness isn't the primary goal. For race day, fill the vents with the included Aero Plugs that ship with the helmet, and you'll ensure full uninterrupted airflow over the top of the Cadence Plus. As extra reassurance in crash-heavy crits, Scott backs up the In-Mold shell with an inner layer of MIPS protection. MIPS, or Multi-directional Impact Protection System, refers to a thin basket on the inside of the helmet that rotates independently of the helmet's shell on impact to diffuse rotational energy generated in certain crashes.

The Scott Centric Plus Helmet provides coverage without weighing you down. Top-end helmets like the Centric Plus separate themselves from lower tier models with more efficient ventilation systems, lower weight, and in recent years, Multi-directional Impact Protection System (MIPS). Each feature was carefully considered when Scott created the Centric Plus, and it shows. Whether you're on a recovery coffee shop ride or toeing up to the start line of a local race, having proper ventilation in a helmet is key to comfort. Heavy front venting along the Centric Plus' body ushers air through the helmet consistently, keeping you cool and level-headed through the most sweltering rides of the year. In terms of crashes, a traditional In-Mold shell provides initial impact protection while keeping overall weight low, and it's helped by the addition of MIPS. MIPS is a Swedish technology that refers to a thin inner basket that rotates upon impact to diffuse rotational energy generated in certain crashes. Fortunately, unless you're in a crash, you'll barely notice MIPS is there at all.

Smith Overtake Helmet Smith Overtake Helmet
You've respected Smith goggles and helmets since you were a know-it-all grom mobbing around your local mountain on skis or a board, and the brand's dependable gear has protected you from more than a few epic crashes over the years. With its passion for the outdoors, it's no surprise that Smith's been steadily expanding into the world of bike, and the Overtake Helmet represents its first foray onto the weight-conscious road cycling scene. An admirable blend of safety and comfort make the Overtake well worth your time and investment--after all, you don't bounce back as quickly as you did in the old days. The Overtake doesn't look like your typical road helmet, and part of that is due to Smith's use of Koroyd, a lightweight, attention-grabbing material that shares a strong resemblance to honeycomb. After finding Koroyd to be significantly more breathable than EPS foam, Smith used it to improve the Overtake's airflow and structural integrity with its ability to absorb almost 30% more impact in crashes than EPS. In addition to safety, Smith was also concerned with aerodynamics, and after expert opinions and extensive wind tunnel testing, the company settled on a design it was satisfied with for the Overtake, bringing it on par with other top-tier road helmets from more traditional cycling brands. The Overtake also displays the same user-friendly design Smith products are known for, with Smith's VaporFit adjustment system allowing you to dial in the right fit quickly pre-ride or out on the roads.

Smith Overtake Helmet Smith Overtake Helmet
At first glance, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the Smith Overtake Helmet couldn't possibly be aerodynamic. Just look at all those little Koroyd tubes, sucking air right down to your head, cooling you as you ride! But, the engineers at Smith, in conjunction with aerodynamics guru Len Brownlie, ensured that the Overtake was competitive on all fronts, including aerodynamics. Over a 40k time trial, the Overtake was only about a second slower than the Specialized Evade, and was over four seconds faster than Giro's Air Attack. Back to those Koroyd tubes, though. They're tiny, extruded, co-polymer tubes that absorb about 30% more impact than traditional EPS foam, and, due to their hollow nature, allow air to flow freely in a way that foam simply can't. On top of that, the microstructures allow for less material to be used in the construction of the helmet, which adds up to a highly-protective helmet that weighs in at just about 250 grams.

Smith Overtake MIPS Helmet Smith Overtake MIPS Helmet
With its futuristic Koroyd layer and innovative MIPS lining, the Smith Overtake MIPS Helmet might make your older relatives think that you're dressing up for some kind of space-themed party when they first see it, muttering "that's the style nowadays" when you correct them that you're just going out for a ride. Protecting your head on a ride is serious business, and the tech Smith uses for the Overtake represents some significant steps forward for mankind. Take the Overtake MIPS out on your next ride knowing that in the event of a crash, you'll have some of the best protection available on your side, with the added comfort of a light, airy design that's a far cry from the cumbersome helmets of decades past. To start, MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers to the technology added to the helmet in the form of a thin inner lining that rotates slightly upon impact to absorb the brain-damaging rotational energy generated by side-angle crashes. The lining is barely perceptible, but it represents a big change in angled-impact protection. Smith then uses a combination of lightweight EPS foam and honeycomb-like Koroyd to construct the inner layers of the helmet, with Koroyd adding ventilation and allowing for more vents to keep you cool as you ride. An aerodynamically-shaped plastic shell wraps across the top of the helmet, guarding against more straightforward impacts, and even with so many pieces working together, the Overtake MIPS manages to weigh in at a pro-approved 250g.
