Challenge Grifo 33 Cross Tire - Clincher Challenge Grifo 33 Cross Tire - Clincher
Because cyclocross tires have to accommodate a particularly wide array of conditions -- from pavement to pure mud -- in a single race, their tread pattern has to be especially capable. Having been refined over many years, and on its way to countless podiums and numerous world championships, the Challenge Grifo 33 Clincher Tire delivers that capability, and then some. The Grifo owes its success to a host of seemingly singular contributions, but ultimately, it all comes down the tread pattern. Challenge bestowed a pattern, that, at first glance, appears low in profile -- and that's because it is. The pattern design doesn't require the extra weight of bulky, tall knobs. Instead, the evident knob shape provides ample grip in terrible conditions while minimizing the associated rolling-resistance over harder stuff. The highest point of the pattern lies in the middle of the tire, while moving outward, the knobbies gradually take on a svelte shape to provide traction in corners. However, the Grifo's tread pattern is intended to be mounted in either direction. Should you require heavy traction, say in hearty mud conditions, Challenge recommends that you mount the tire with the tread orientation facing backward. For "normal" race conditions, mount with the tread rolling forward. Regardless, you'll be rolling fast. For durability, the Grifo is constructed from a highly puncture-resistant and lightweight Super Poly casing. The bead of the tire uses an open tubular design. We know that it sounds like an oxymoron -- a clincher tubular. However, the benefits of Challenge open tubulars are astounding. They use the same hand-made construction techniques and materials as Challenge's tubulars. The only difference is that instead of being sewn, beads are actually formed by folding the casing around Aramid fibers. What's Aramid' Aramid is used for the tire beads for the same reason that it's used for bullet-proof vests -- its lightweight, compact strength. This fiber prevents roll...

Challenge Grifo 33 Cross Tire - Tubular Challenge Grifo 33 Cross Tire - Tubular
If its multiple-world-championship-winning tread pattern doesn't grab your attention, then the incredibly smooth and tough 300tpi casing should do the trick, right' Or the classic tan sidewall' Or the legendary durability' If none of these things convinces you that the Challenge Grifo 33 Tubular Tire is worth serious consideration this season, then you might want to give serious consideration to your ability to give serious consideration. The hand-made Grifo 33 Tubular Tire has a highly puncture-resistant and lightweight Super Poly casing. With 300 threads per inch, you can expect a remarkably supple ride. It's a difference that you'll feel the first time out. Additionally, the Grifo tread is hand-glued onto the casing when the casing is already mounted and inflated on a wheel. As a result, the tread isn't put under tension when you inflate the tire on your wheel, and that lack of tension leads to a lower rolling-resistance, added grip, and increased comfort. A superior all-around 'cross tire must have tread that provides a harmonious balance between low rolling-resistance and grip, and the Grifo's tread is world-renowned for striking that balance perfectly. The knobs are relatively low-profile, but they're effectively spaced in order to shed mud and to provide excellent traction. Simply put, the Grifo Cross rolls fast, it bites into soft ground, and it corners as if it's on rails. The Challenge Grifo Cross Tubular Tire is available in a 700c x 33mm size and in the color Black/tan. Each tire weighs in around 415 grams. Please note that Challenge gave this tire a latex inner tube to save as much weight and roll as fast as possible. Because latex is more porous than butyl rubber, you'll have to pump it up a bit before your rides.

Challenge Paris Roubaix Tire - Clincher Challenge Paris Roubaix Tire - Clincher
Although the sturdy aluminum box-sectioned wheels that were once synonymous with the Spring Classics have become nearly extinct in the age of composites, we still see riders opting for reliable, wide tires when the roads get rough. It's no secret why these bigger tires are the preferred choice for gravel, cobbles, and dirt -- they provide better cornering and traction, are less prone to pinch flats, and most importantly, they provide a more comfortable ride over narrower options. This is why Challenge continues to produce its Paris Roubaix Clincher with a 27mm-wide profile. Its moderately wide design and gripp'y tread pattern make it the best choice for riders who need a supple tire that grips well on rough terrain, yet is still plenty fast. With a name that represents the pinnacle of the classics races, Challenge's Paris Roubaix was built to provide a compliant ride, regardless of road surfaces. Challenge accomplished this by using its handmade, highly puncture-resistant, and lightweight Super Poly casing. With 260 threads per inch (TPI), you receive a remarkably supple ride -- and it's a difference that you'll feel the first time out. On top of the casing, Challenge added a belt of corespun polyester. Essentially, this means that the casing fibers are made by twisting staple polyester fibers around a central filament core, creating one yarn from multiple fibers. As a result, the material is between 40 and 50% stronger than typically spun materials, while retaining a similar, if not lower, overall weight. This second layer is what Challenge calls its PPS (Puncture Protection System), and it's specifically made from the tightly woven polyester material in order to preserve the casing's supple feel. For the tread, Challenge used its file-like herringbone pattern. This low-profile pattern perfectly blends speed and grip. The tread was applied using Challenge's proven hand-glued method, which involves mounting and then inflating the casing on a wheel. Only then d...

Challenge Strada Bianca Tire - Clincher Challenge Strada Bianca Tire - Clincher
The Challenge Strada Bianca Clincher tire is designed for bumpy, rough roads. Not only is it one of the toughest tires in Challenge's lineup, it's also one of the smoothest-riding, which, for a manufacturer that's known for its smooth-riding tires, is saying a lot. The Strada Bianca's casing is its handmade, puncture-resistant, lightweight SuperPoly material. With its 260 threads per inch (TPI), you'' immediately notice the supple ride. On top of the casing, Challenge added a belt of corespun polyester, made by twisting fibers around a central filament core, creating one yarn from multiple strands. The material is 40 to 50% stronger than typically spun materials, while retaining or even reducing overall weight. This is the PPS (Puncture Protection System) layer, and it's specifically made from the tightly woven polyester material to preserve the casing's supple feel. Challenge then added another PPS layer for additional puncture protection. The tread pattern--the Paris Roubaix Herringbone--is among Challenge's most versatile. The tread is hand-glued onto the already inflated carcass. This means that the tread isn't under tension when you inflate your tires, resulting in lower rolling resistance, added grip, and increased comfort.

Challenge Strada Tubular Tire Challenge Strada Tubular Tire
There's no denying that experiencing a great tubular tire is a wonderful experience. You won't believe that your bike could be so smooth and fast. So if you're going to make the switch to tubulars, do yourself a favor and wrap some Challenge Strada Tubular Tires around your hoops, because Challenge simply does it right. For the casing of the Strada, Challenge used its handmade, highly puncture-resistant, and lightweight SuperPoly material. With its 300 threads per inch (TPI), you receive a remarkably supple ride that you'll feel the first time out. On top of the casing, Challenge added a belt of corespun polyester, made by twisting fibers around a central filament core, creating one yarn from multiple strands. This layer is what Challenge calls its PPS (Puncture Protection System), and it's specifically made from the tightly woven polyester material to preserve the casing's supple feel. The 25mm-wide profile was then wrapped with the popular Paris Roubaix herringbone tread pattern, a design that continues to be one of Challenge's most versatile for a variety of road surfaces. This low-profile pattern perfectly blends speed and grip. The tread was applied using Challenge's proven hand-glued methods, which involves mounting and then inflating the casing on a wheel. Only then does Challenge carefully glue on the tread layer. As a result, the tread isn't put under tension when you inflate the tire on your wheel, and that lack of tension leads to lower rolling-resistance, added grip, and increased comfort. The Challenge Strada Tubular Tire weighs approximately 285 grams each, comes in the colors Black/black and Black/tan, and in the 700c x 25mm size.

Clement LAS Tire - Tubular Clement LAS Tire - Tubular
The fact that the folks at Clement named the LAS Tire - Tubular after the airport code for the location of their favorite stateside 'cross race (Las Vegas) should tell you two things about its development. First, it's made by people with a real passion for the sport. Second, its design is informed by actual cyclocross experience, not some computer simulation software in a sterile lab. This is Clement's speed tire, which is evident in the tread. The center strip of the tire is a fine nail-file tread that gradually builds up in size to a row of full-blown knobs on the shoulders. This design grants speed in the straights and confident control in the corners and technical spots, recommending the LAS for dry, fast, grassy courses. Its tubeless construction and reinforced sidewall decrease your chances of flatting at an inopportune time, making this tire a sure bet. The removable valve core makes for quick application of liquid sealant.

Clement MXP Tire - Clincher Clement MXP Tire - Clincher
The MXP is Clement's new do-everything cross tire. The tire's center lugs are designed to roll fast but still offer brake and acceleration grip. The larger, more aggressive side lugs, which were inspired by soccer cleats, dig in for hard cornering. It isn't the absolute best tire you can buy for any one thing, but it's right up there with the best for attacking every type of terrain. The tread is molded from 60 durometer rubber. For a super-supple ride, Clement built the LAS with a 120tpi aramid and Kevlar-bead casing. Ride is also enhanced with the tire's 33mm width and lack of puncture-resistant liner.

Clement MXP Tire - Tubeless Clement MXP Tire - Tubeless
Clement may be a relatively unfamiliar name for younger American riders unaware of the boutique French firm's mid-century glory days. After a few disappointing years of dormancy, new ownership and a strong lineup of 'cross tires have brought Clement some long overdue attention stateside. The company continues to pick up steam each season, with the MXP Tubeless Tire bringing more versatility to the line in its tubeless-ready clincher configuration. As with all Clement tires, the MXP shares its name with the airport code belonging to an iconic cycling city. In this case it's Milan, which gets the nod for its World Cup presence and role as Clement's adopted home after World War I. We appreciate that, though the MXP holds the distinction as Clement's newest 'cross tire, it uses a modified version of the Grifo, one of our oldest CX friends. The decades-old Grifo profile now enjoys added flexibility from siping in the central chevrons and staggered side knobs modeled after soccer cleats (footy boots for you Europhiles) designed to tear through mud. It's similar to the PDX, but--unlike the PDX--the MXP enjoys a more versatile construction. It won't hang on through the soft and sloppy stuff as unfailingly as the myopic PDX, but it's extremely adaptable through a broader range of conditions, including snow, grass, hardpack, sand, and dry singletrack. If you'd rather show up on race day with a one-tire quiver than a trunk full of rubber, you can't do much better than the MXP.

Clement MXP Tire - Tubular Clement MXP Tire - Tubular
In the market for some new tubulars for your 'cross rig' Sure, the Clement name isn't as widely circulated as some of the bigger rubber brands, but in Europe, its reputation was long-ago solidified as a procurer of some of the finest tires available. Makes sense, then, that the very Euro sport of cyclocross, as it rises in popularity in the States, ushers in "new" brands like Clement. The Clement MXP Tubular is an example of the knowhow that the company brings to the table. Based on its famous Grifo tread, the MXP is Clement's new definitive all-rounder. Designed to be your tire if you can only choose one tread for all conditions, the MXP's center track of clovers and chevrons is designed for low rolling resistance on pavement or hardpack, but it also digs in a bit when things loosen up. For when the going gets really rough, the larger, more aggressive side knobs -- whose design was inspired by soccer cleats -- grab the earth and don't let go. Helping keep weight down is the lack of a dedicated inner tube -- instead, the casing itself is designed to be airtight, and the valve cores are removable for added convenience and ease of puncture repair via sealant. And, unlike cyclocross tubulars of yore, the tread is no longer glued onto a casing -- the MXP's tread is formed as part of the rubber covering that stretches from bead to bead over the casing, protecting the sidewall from premature deterioration and also meaning the tread can't peel off under hard use, two problems that used to dramatically shorten tire life. The Clement MXP Tubular Tire comes in the size 700c x 33mm and in the color Black.

Clement PDX Tire - Clincher Clement PDX Tire - Clincher
Clement's PDX Clincher Tire has one of the most demanding job descriptions in cyclocrossery: Must love mud without sacrificing speed while maintaining a gap on hardpack. Fortunately, it's also got the perfect resume for meeting those requirements. Since it's a clincher, this PDX loses the ride quality battle with the tubular model; however, it does drop a few grams and is also a helluva lot more convenient and economical. While it won't match the peerless feel of tubs, the clincher version does have the same sidewall reinforcement and, most importantly, that signature PDX tread pattern. With taller, more widely spaced knobs than Clement's revered, all-conditions MXP, the PDX has its focus on looser, wetter courses -- it is, after all, named after the airport code for Portland, OR, a city whose 'cross scene is as healthy as her courses are notoriously nasty. The semi-connected center rib provides just enough of a rotor to keep things straight in the muck and reduce rolling resistance when you hit the pavement or hardpack. The tire's real star is the shoulder, where siped, square-edged knobs bite aggressively throughout the arc of sloppy turns and when the tire sinks into softer earth.

Clement PDX Tire - Tubeless Clement PDX Tire - Tubeless
The recent news that Clement's clinchers are now all tubeless-ready sparked a bevy of positive feedback for the French brand, which had formerly only offered tubular and clincher versions of its popular tires. Now, you can run the Clement PDX Tubeless Tire as a regular clincher or tubeless; as long as you're in the mud, the tire won't complain either way. As a classic mud-shedding shoe that's graced the wheels of lively 'cross steeds for years now, the PDX shows its strength best on soft, sticky mud. It's no coincidence at all that the PDX shares a name with the airport code for Portland, Oregon; inspired by the infectiously popular 'cross scene and frequent rainy days of the Pacific Northwest, the PDX features an open tread pattern to shed the thick and goopy stuff. More aggressive side knobs stand at attention to give you confidence to lean hard into corners, and Clement specifically shaped the leading edge of each knob to provide extra traction when you mash down on the pedals to accelerate out of a switchback and into a straightaway. When you hit stretches of course dried out by the sun, the PDX's center knobs keep the tire moving fast, rather than letting it get bogged down by traction where it isn't needed. Clement does make other 'cross tires better suited to drier days, so we'd save the PDX for the days when solid ground is nowhere to be found.

Clement PDX Tire - Tubular Clement PDX Tire - Tubular
If mud is on the menu for your next cyclocross race, look no further than the proven Clement PDX Tubular tire. Clement has been perfecting the PDX's tread for years, and when smartly wrapped around a durable casing, it becomes the weapon of choice for seasoned 'crossers who don't want to get bogged down. With taller, more widely spaced knobs than Clement's revered, all-conditions MXP, the PDX has its focus on looser, wetter courses -- it is, after all, named after the city of Portland, Oregon, with its avid cyclocross culture and notoriously nasty course conditions. The semi-connected center rib provides just enough of a rudder in the mud to keep things straight, while also keeping rolling resistance relatively low when you hit the pavement or hardpack. Move to the shoulder, and the siped, square-edged knobs bite aggressively, both in the turns and when the tire sinks into softer earth. The PDX's low 370g weight can be attributed to the casing's lack of a dedicated inner tube layer -- the casing itself is instead airtight, which keeps the tire light and keeps ride quality smooth. Fear not for durability, however, because the PDX's sidewalls are not only reinforced, but coated in the same layer of rubber from which the tread is cast, meaning there's a uniform jacket of rubber hugging the entire exposed portion of the tire, further protecting sidewalls and keeping the tread from peeling away from the casing. Just in case the worst happens, the tire's valve cores are also removable so you can repair it via liquid sealant. It all equates to a tire that's ready for gnarliest conditions, courses, and riders out there. The Clement PDX Tubular tire comes in the size 700c x 33mm and in the color Black.

Clement Strada LGG 120 TPI Tire - Clincher Clement Strada LGG 120 TPI Tire - Clincher
When we first heard the claim that the Strada LGG 120 TPI Tire was designed with inspiration from the Criterium Seta, we were skeptical. But this claim comes straight from Clement itself, who continues to be the sexiest name in industrially produced tires, so we were willing to give it some credence. Then we rode the tires, and we realized that -- though the Criterium Seta remains the unattainable Excalibur of tires today -- much of its DNA is present in the supple, puncture-resistant Strada LGG. This being Clement, we're obliged to note that the tire's LGG initialism is a nod to the airport code for Liege. We can't ever hear or read about that city without mentally appending -Bastogne-Liege to its name. The oldest of the classics, La Doyenne has been held rain or shine (or, occasionally, snow -- check out the 1980 edition were Hinault dropped a huge, badger-shaped hammer on the proceedings) with the obligatory interruption for WWI over 100 times now, so it's only fitting that the Strada LGG be able to hold fast in all springtime conditions. The tire's dual-compound construction situates material with a durometer rating of 70a on the center strip and 60a at the shoulders. This means that the confident road feel of Clement's classic chevron pattern is complemented by a fast-rolling, efficient center and tacky shoulders, maximizing speed on the flats and allowing more confident cornering.

Clement Strada LGG 60tpi Tire Clement Strada LGG 60tpi Tire
Though the cycling industry is prone to radical self-reinvention every few years, one thing remains a welcome constant: the supple ride quality of Clement tires. The Strada LGG 60 TPI Clincher Tire lives up to that reputation, albeit with a lower TPI than its more expensive LGG 120 counterpart. The lower TPI means the LGG 60 does take a hit in the suppleness department, but it makes up for it with a longer wear life and more puncture resistance. This being Clement, we're obliged to note that the tire's LGG initialism is a nod to the airport code for Liege. We can't ever hear or read about that city without mentally appending -Bastogne-Liege to its name. The oldest of the classics, La Doyenne has been held rain or shine (or, occasionally, snow -- check out the unforgiving 2016 edition or the 1980 edition where Hinault dropped a huge, badger-shaped hammer on the proceedings) over 100 times now, and the Strada LGG's mix of a slightly textured center strip and Clement's shoulder chevrons helps maintain grip in unpredictable spring time conditions. The 60 TPI model features a single compound compared to the LGG 120's dual-compound construction. Instead of the latter's softer shoulders, the LGG 60 uses a single, efficiently rolling compound throughout. Using the harder material on the shoulders also adds an additional boost to the tire's longevity, and the addition of a puncture-resistant belt helps fend off ride-ending debris.

Clement X'Plor USH 120 TPI Tire - Clincher Clement X'Plor USH 120 TPI Tire - Clincher
The 60 TPI version of Clement's X'Plor USH 120 TPI Clincher Tire is more than capable of slugging it out with gravel, washboard, fire roads, and poorly maintained tarmac; however, the added suppleness of the 120 TPI option makes those all-surface adventures feel less like a body-bruising title fight. The tire lines up with Clement's airport naming convention by taking its name from the airport code for Ushuaia (USH) in Argentina, the southernmost city in the world and the gateway to Tierra del Fuego. Clement cites Tierra's adventure bike touring scene as the inspiration for the tire's construction, which features low, broad knobs and a hard, smooth rolling compound on the centerline that's as at home on dirt as it is on slipshod chip seal. The softer shoulders are bedazzled with rows of diamond-shaped tread for traction on less hospitable surfaces.

Hutchinson Fusion 5 All Season Tire - Tubeless Hutchinson Fusion 5 All Season Tire - Tubeless
We all dream of race-day conditions involving sun, a subtle breeze, and smooth, unblemished ribbons of road stretching out in front of us. In reality, sun and a light breeze might happen, but road conditions are rarely, if ever, ideal. Rather than pining for the tarmac of your dreams, wrapping your race hoops with Hutchinson's Fusion 5 All-Season Tire would be a more constructive action to take. Designed for race-worthy rolling through unfavorable conditions, the Fusion 5 will enable your race bike to do what it was designed for -- regardless of whether you're racing on sloppy winter and spring roads or kinder summer and fall ones. The number 5 in the Fusion's name refers to the five characteristics Hutchinson addressed when constructing it, including grip, efficiency, durability, puncture resistance, and comfort. It uses a striated design on the rubber to enhance the tire's grip and ability to shed water on wet, early season roads, as well as a larger grain size to add grip and puncture resistance. Comfort comes courtesy of the 127 TPI, and Hutchinson paid close attention to overall efficiency by choosing between 105 different rubber compounds while fine-tuning the combination that would keep the Fusion 5 capable but quick.

Hutchinson Fusion 5 Galactik Tire - Tubeless Hutchinson Fusion 5 Galactik Tire - Tubeless
When updating its Fusion 3 tire lineup for 2016, the French rubber masters over at Hutchinson chose to skip straight past four and instead christen their new line Fusion 5. Rather than a bold statement in post-modernist self-reflexivity, the move is actually in reference to the five characteristics they feel a tire needs to exhibit to achieve the best ride quality: grip, rolling performance, durability, puncture resistance, and comfort. Amongst the Fusion 5 line, the Galactik Tubeless Tire occupies the upper echelon, representing the thinnest, most pared-down option for race-day speed and resilience. Whether you're whirring around corners and riding at threshold on a closed criterium course or out in an open road race, Hutchinson makes sure that you'll be able to take the Galactik out without holding your breath and waiting for a flat. Though the Fusion 5 line does include an All Season tire option for more consistently challenging conditions, the Galactik is more than capable of managing its share of imperfect shoulders and road grit in a race, maintaining a low rolling resistance with a casing that's far from delicate. That casing is a 127 TPI carcass of densely-woven threads that Hutchinson further reinforces with nylon puncture protection to create a plush ride with confidence-inspiring durability. Guaranteeing a tire won't betray you in a race is impossible, but the Galactik's tubeless construction, smart composition, and Hutchinson pedigree make it something we'd be pretty confident taking to a starting line.

Hutchinson Sector 28 Tire - Tubeless Hutchinson Sector 28 Tire - Tubeless
While your weekend may not consist of riding the storied cobblestones of France for a chance to win the Queen of the Classics, you can still take on the bumpiest chipseal roads you encounter with the confidence of a pro racing Roubaix with Hutchinson's Sector 28 Tubeless tire. The French manufacturer developed the Sector 28 in honor of a cobblestone-filled race on its home turf, but the tire can handle more than just centuries-old stones. Using dual-compound rubber and 127tpi casing, Hutchinson created a tire that resists flatting and is dependable on rough roads, gravel, and dirt, maintains a supple ride and easy handling. The center tread is slightly firmer to encourage low rolling resistance, with softer rubber on the sides and subtle grooves in the sidewall to provide grip while cornering. Relax while riding on summer's torn-up construction zone roads without having to worry about squinting for stray nails or staples -- Hutchinson includes a thin barrier to reinforce the center tread that manages to avoid making the Sector 28s feel clunky.

Mavic Crossmax Charge XL Tire - 29in Mavic Crossmax Charge XL Tire - 29in
All-mountain riding should be exactly that: all of the terrain on a given mountain. Mavic's front-specific Crossmax Charge XL 29in Tire is built towards that end, combining a soft compound with a durometer of 40 with a low-weight, high-strength, two-ply casing for a tire that holds onto slick roots and rocky switchbacks on descents without weighing you down on climbs. Its low weight is further reduced if it's run tubeless, a design that, when sealant, tape, and a valve are taken into account, can actually add weight for road setups; however, any mountain goat will do almost anything to get rid of the huge, heavy tubes required for knobby tires. The Crossmax Charge XL is a front-specific tire designed to pair with a Crossmax Quest XL out back.

Mavic Crossmax Quest XL Tire - 29in Mavic Crossmax Quest XL Tire - 29in
The key differences between Mavic's all-mountain Crossmax Quest XL 29in Tire and its XC-specific, non-XL counterpart are the former's improved puncture resistance and grippier rubber compounds. Though it's built for rides leaning more toward trail, the Crossmax Quest XL does feature an additional nylon layer on its casing, giving the rear-specific tire another plate of armor to stand up to enduro abuse. It also softer center and shoulder compounds, registering a durometer of 50 and 40, respectively, which provides more confident grip on terrain than the standard Crossmax Quest's hardness of 55 and 50. The centerline's modest reduction by five is noticeable, but not nearly as much as the sidewall's reduction of 10, which helps the tires stick to the sides of rocks and roots so you can clean lines without washing out. The Crossmax Quest XL is rear-specifc; pair it with Mavic's Crossmax Charge XL up front.

Mavic Crossmax Roam XL Tire - 29 Mavic Crossmax Roam XL Tire - 29
The Crossmax Roam XL 29-inch Tire is what happens when one of the foremost wheel makers in the world decides to get into the tire game. Mavic recognized an opportunity to improve upon what's out there in the all-mountain tire game, and they've offered up a fine entry of their own. When compared with the front-specific Charge tire, the rear-specific Roam is a touch less tacky but more durable and with a higher rolling efficiency. It's a dual compound tire with a durometer rating of 50a on the shoulders to enhance grip in corners and a strip of 60a in the center for low rolling resistance. The Roam's blend of traction, rolling resistance, and tread longevity recommends it for aggressive, fast riding that holds corners and lays down power. Like its front brother, the Roam also incorporates Guard 2, which uses a dual-ply, 66 TPI casing to help prevent flats, even at the low pressures you'll be able to run because of the UST Tubeless Ready design. Rolling tubeless means you can ditch the heavy tubes and rock a lower PSI, which makes for better handling and grip at lower rotational weight. The tire's tread graduates from short, ramped studs in the middle, for aggressive power transfer and longevity, to pronounced knobs on the shoulders in the softer compound for confident, don't-have-to-slow-down cornering. The 2. 2in casing further complements the tire's aggressive disposition.

Mavic Ksyrium Elite Allroad Disc Wheelset - Clincher Mavic Ksyrium Elite Allroad Disc Wheelset - Clincher
Mavic embraces the all-road trend with its Ksyrium Elite Allroad Disc Clincher Wheelset, building on the Ksyrium's legendary ride with a beefier 19mm internal rim width that better pairs with the wider tires needed to venture beyond the pavement. Trading out the more expensive Ksyrium Pro Allroad's Zicral spokes for ever so slightly heavier steel spokes, the Ksyrium Elite Allroad lands at more palatable pricepoint that'll have you packing your weekends with adventures onto roads less traveled. To construct the rims, Mavic uses its Inter Spoke Milling 4 Dimensions (ISM 4D), which involves machining non-essential material from the rim to reduce weight, but keeping it around the alloy spokes to give the rims the strength and stiffness you'd expect from anything in the Ksyrium line. This process also lowers the rotating mass of the wheel for better responsiveness and acceleration than non-milled rims -- making sure these wheels stay snappy in power-sucking loose gravel or on poorly maintained side roads. The rim width wasn't the only part of the Allroad Disc that Mavic decided needed an update -- the brand also reworked its hub design, introducing the Instant Drive 360 freewheel system. The system replaces the formerly used pawls with two interlocking, ratcheting rings that Mavic claims engage every nine degrees. In addition to faster engagement, the hubs are easier to maintain and protect, especially after being treated with a new sealant to keep out moisture and debris. The Ksyrium Elite Allroad Disc wheelset is available with a 12 x 100mm and 12 x 142mm thru-axle pairing, with a Shimano/SRAM freehub, and your choice of 6-bolt or centerlock rotor attachment. It also comes outfitted with Mavic's Yksion Elite Allroad 30mm tubeless tires, though you can choose to run them as standard clinchers if you prefer. While they aren't bombproof, the Yksions are quick on pavement and consistently stable in off-road conditions without being weighed down by aggressive knobs.

Maxxis All Terrane EXO/TR Tire - Clincher Maxxis All Terrane EXO/TR Tire - Clincher
When you take your first look at the 'cross course you'll be racing on this weekend, you know that mixed weather conditions necessitate a tire capable of taking on a bit of everything. Rather than a skittish fast roller or mud-flinging bruiser, the best tire for the job is one that won't be intimidated by squish, but can turn around and snap to attention when you hit a dry berm. Fortunately, Maxxis' All Terrane EXO/TR Tire was made for these kinds of days. Wrap your race hoops in the All Terrane and you'll be ready for variable conditions with a wide, open tread shedding mud quickly in soft spots, and a 120 TPI preventing you from getting bogged down. Tall, square knobs grab hold of the dirt when the course turns rutted and sloppy a few laps in, but their ramped positioning on the tire allows for quick acceleration when the dirt dries and you need to open it up heading into a flyover.

Maxxis Ardent Race Tire - 27.5 Maxxis Ardent Race Tire - 27.5
The original Ardent tire is a tough, versatile Maxxis classic, but the new Ardent Race 27. 5in Tire takes a good thing and makes it even better. By condensing the tread and making the knobs shallower, Maxxis made the Ardent Race considerably faster without seriously reducing grip, but still kept the same ramped central knobs and burlier shoulder knobs for plenty of traction in the corners, especially in reasonably firm conditions. The Ardent Race also uses Maxxis' 3C Maxx Speed rubber compound, which blends three different rubbers to provide the optimal blend of durability, speed, and grip. Speaking of durability, the Ardent Race is available with EXO sidewall protection for increased burliness, if you're worried about tearing up your tires in tough terrain. Both EXO and non-EXO versions also utilize a super-supple 120 thread-per-inch casing, which smooths out rough trails and keeps you connected to the trail for ultimate control.

Maxxis Ardent Race Tire - 29 Maxxis Ardent Race Tire - 29
The Ardent Race Tire is an updated version of the classic Ardent that not only receives the 29er size, it is also given a lighter and faster tread for maximum speed and cornering on hard-packed XC trails. While the tread pattern retains the same configuration as the original Ardent, Maxxis removed some of the depth from the knobs while also condensing the entire pattern. Shoulder knobs combined with ramped central knobs create a tire that rolls fast and holds its grip in the corners. This makes for a tire ideal for hardpack and gravely conditions. The casing is sewn with 120 threads-per-inch, which means a more flexible tire than many 60 or even 90TPI casings. It is also a TR Tubeless-Ready casing. The compound of the treads is the Maxxis Triple-C Maxx Speed, a blend of three rubber densities that are arranged across the 2. 2-inch-wide tires in the areas where they perform best.

Maxxis Ardent Tire - 27.5 Maxxis Ardent Tire - 27.5
Next time you're out on your local trail system, keep an eye peeled and you'll notice way more than your fair share of Maxxis Ardent Tires on trail and XC bikes. That's not an accident. The Ardent is Maxxis' most versatile, and arguably most popular, tire, with two widths to suit all riding styles and a design that's equal parts fast rolling, grippy, and durable. All-mountain riders looking for extra traction would do well to mount up the 2. 4in option, while those who want more rolling speed should go for the 2. 25in width. Don't get confused, though; both options boast ramped center knobs to decrease rolling resistance and improve braking, and both have blocky side knobs that serve up tons of grip when you lay your bike over into a turn. The Ardent also uses Maxxis' EXO sidewall protection to fight off pinch flats and punctures, and it features Lightweight Ultimate Sidewall Technology (LUST), an extra rubber compound that makes the tire less permeable and therefore less susceptible to leaks. It's also set up to run tubeless, so you can ditch the annoying tubes and run lower pressures, which equates to better grip.

Maxxis entered into the new world of 29 Plus tires with its Chronicle EXO TR -- it addresses the growing popularity of bikepacking with a tire that's versatile enough for long rides where mountain and fat biking conditions are the norm. The tread pattern is consistent throughout the tire, allowing the fast-rolling dual compound rubber to grip well whether you're taking a tight corner or climbing in sand, and Maxxis treats it with EXO sidewall protection to ward off mid-ride flats. At 1050g, it weighs in similarly to other tires in its class, falling between more traditional mountain tires and burlier fat bike tires.

It's worth noting that the Chronicle has gained considerable attention in the bikepacking world for its ability to adapt to myriad trail conditions that riders may experience in any given day, and though Maxxis calls it out for being best-suited to looser stuff, the Chronicle also rolls consistently well beyond those conditions.

Maxxis Forekaster EXO/TR Tire - 27.5in Maxxis Forekaster EXO/TR Tire - 27.5in
Predicting the weather is almost impossible during the shoulder seasons, especially when you're trying to do it on your way out the door for a ride. Unless you're a meteorologist, give it up already. Wrap the new Maxxis Forekaster EXO/TR Tire around your hoops as soon as the weather starts to take a turn after dry summer days, and barrel into anything knowing it'll have your back. Where your weather reading comes up short, the Forekaster takes over, tracking loose, muddy trails where you may not even expect them and hanging on reliably when you jam on the brakes coming into a steep, slick descent. Adaptability is key to enjoying the trails under the sketchy conditions that set in late in the season, so Maxxis trusts dual-compound rubber to give the Forekaster confident grip when you rally over steep berms faster than you should. Once you're back on a straightaway, the tire's fast-rolling center and 120 TPI takes over, accelerating quickly to help you make the most of a rare dry stretch of trail under tree cover. Maxxis shapes the squared knobs to medium-height, then spaced them evenly to allow them to shed mud and keep you from getting bogged down on a long ride. Along the center, wide, cupped knobs back you up when you fly into a descent covered in slushy snow faster than you should and slam on the brakes. The tire won't clean up all your mistakes but it'll certainly try.

27. 5in wheels won their place in the already crowded wheel size market with their scrappy ability to transition between 26 and 29in terrain. Given that flexibility, it's only fitting that their tires can keep up, and the Maxxis Ikon 3C/EXO/TR 27. 5in Tire is equal to the task. It's a lightweight, tubeless-ready tire that mixes biting knobs with the triple rubber 3C compound to create a truly versatile tire. The Ikon uses a 120tpi casing with EXO protection, which involves adding pinch flat and abrasion protection at the sidewall for an enhanced resistance to cuts. The casing is then wrapped in a tread pattern that favors both buff and loamy conditions due to the spacing between the center lugs and the raised side knobs. The center lugs are also ramped to resist folding under braking and acceleration. Maxxis made the center knobs from a harder compound. So, it resists wear and flex in the knobs while taking advantage of the supple casing's ability to conform to irregularities and permitting the softer side compound to grab in corners and while navigating off camber over wet roots and rocks.

Maxxis Ikon 3C/EXO/TR Tire- 29in Maxxis Ikon 3C/EXO/TR Tire- 29in
Low profile tires might roll fast in the right circumstances, but the one constant in mountain biking is that conditions constantly change. That's where this race-ready, 2. 2in-wide Maxxis Ikon EXO Tubeless Ready Tire comes into play. It's a lightweight, tubeless-ready tire that mixes biting knobs with three rubber compounds to create a truly versatile tire. The Ikon uses a 120tpi casing with EXO protection. What's this' Well, EXO protection consists of added pinch flat and abrasion protection at the sidewall for an enhanced resistance to cuts. Even better, it does this with overloading the tire with bulk. The casing is then wrapped in a tread pattern that favors both buff and loamy conditions. This is possible due to the spacing between the center lugs and the raised side knobs. Those center lugs are also ramped to resist folding under braking and acceleration. However, the 3C compound is what really allows this tire to bridge the traction gap from packed to loose. Maxxis made the center knobs from a harder compound. So, it resists wear and flex in the knobs. The supple casing, however, allows it to conform to irregularities, and it also permits the softer side compound to grab. As a result, you gain a positive traction over wet roots and rocks. Also, as a three compound tire, the transitions from straightaways to turns are utterly seamless. The Maxxis Ikon EXO Tubeless Ready 29in Tire is UST compatible and is available in a 2. 2-inch width.

Maxxis Mammoth EXO Fat Bike Tire - 26in Maxxis Mammoth EXO Fat Bike Tire - 26in
Maxxis' Mammoth EXO was the brand's first foray into the world of fat bike tires, and like the ancient beast it's named for, it's prepared to roam over any amount of mud, snow, or sand you put in front of it without a second thought. Unlike its namesake, though, we think this tire is around for the long haul. Made with fast-rolling dual compound rubber, the Mammoth won't get slowed down on hardpack with its low-profile center tread, and whether you're turning in loose sand or on groomed snow trails, the tall side knobs make for consistent, reliable cornering. Maxxis reinforces the 120 TPI Mammoth with its EXO protection, and at 1270g, it won't be the lightest tire in your garage, but it's what you'll want to be on when the going gets tough.

Maxxis Minion DHF EXO/TR Tire - 27.5 Plus Maxxis Minion DHF EXO/TR Tire - 27.5 Plus
In its decade-plus existence, the Maxxis Minion DHF has sat at the helm of trail and enduro sleds and dug in around switchbacks, floated through rock gardens, and straightlined singletrack more times than anyone can count. The classic tire continues its trail dominance in a new plus version with the Minion DHF EXO/TR 27. 5 Plus Tire. We can't think of many better ways to get rowdy on the trails than wrapping your beefy plus-sized front rim in a Minion DHF. This higher-volume version comes endowed with the same assortment of tall, square knobs that made its predecessor so successful, and when considering the added plushness and stability compared to 29 and 27. 5 that 27. 5 Plus brings, the Minion DHF stands to give you a hell of a ride. Maxxis uses dual-compound rubber to construct the Minion DHF to give it stable grip in corners and the ability to take off on smooth sections. Equipping this version of the tire to excel in the kind of sharp, repetitive rock gardens that often slice open sidewalls, Maxxis surrounds the Minion DHF in EXO protective casing. We can't promise you'll never flat, but you definitely shouldn't hold your breath when you round a quick corner and slam through a rock-encrusted section of trail. Plus, since it comes tubeless-ready, you'll be hard-pressed to flat during a ride unless you're trying to.

Maxxis Minion DHF EXO/TR Tire - 29in Maxxis Minion DHF EXO/TR Tire - 29in
Something of a fixture on the trails in the past few years, the Maxxis Minion, in all it's various iterations, has been living up to its name famously since its creation. Nimbler than its Highroller II Sibling and scrappy enough to stay standing through loose, white-knuckle sections of trail, we'd reach for the 29in Minion DHF EXO/TR Tire gladly on days that challenge us to stay engaged through every mile. As we mentioned, the Minion comes in different combinations of compounds and casings; this version is equipped with a dual compound rubber construction to give it speed on smooth singletrack or the occasional fire road, with dependable grip and traction when the going gets rougher and switchbacks appear. To give you the confidence to take on bumps and bruises and a few bigger-than-intended hits, this Minion also comes with the reassurance of Maxxis EXO protection beefing it up. Finally, a collection of squared off, ramped knobs are responsible for grabbing onto the trail and digging in, arranged strategically to give you traction while cornering without slowing you down too much on the straightaways and descents. The Minion's far from the speediest tire in existence, but it's not trying to be the fastest. Staying efficient on the smooth stuff and being ready to dive in when things get messy is the Minion DHF's mission, and it does so with aplomb.

Maxxis Minion DHF Wide Trail 3C/EXO/TR Tire - 27.5in Maxxis Minion DHF Wide Trail 3C/EXO/TR Tire - 27.5in
Unless you recently returned from a vacation to Mars, you've noticed the "wider is better" trend taking over the mountain bike world. Maxxis is getting in on the game with its new Minion DHF Wide Trail 3C/EXO/TR 27. 5in Tire, which despite its name isn't actually wider than the original Minion, but features a tweaked tread pattern that's designed to offer better grip when mounted on wider rims. By changing (slightly) the location and orientation of the knobs, Maxxis was able to direct cornering force straight into the edge knobs at smaller lean angles, so you get the killer grip of the classic Minion without having to lay your wide-rimmed ride all the way down and risk washing out -- a distinct possibility with traditional tires mounted on wide rims. The tread isn't the only part of the Minion WT designed to improve traction. It's tubeless ready, so you can run it at lower pressures to improve grip, and comes in both 3C Maxx Grip and 3C Maxx Terra editions, the former of which is harder and more trail-friendly than the softer, DH-crushing latter. Both tires feature Maxxis' EXO casing, which is pliable but made to take a rocky beating, so you don't end up with sliced rubbers after shredding the pointy rocks and sharp-edged drops of trails like Moab's Porcupine Rim. Also of note is the DHF's comfort on soggy trails, which is in contrast to the DHR's jones for hardpack, loose dirt, and dry trails.

Maxxis Minion DHF WT Wide Trail 3C/Double Down/TR Tire - 27.5in Maxxis Minion DHF WT Wide Trail 3C/Double Down/TR Tire - 27.5in
Some all-mountain shredders don't need it all to feel good. But that's not us. If it's not you, either, then Dr. Maxxis is prescribing 27. 5in of the Minion DHF WT Wide Trail 3C/Double Down/TR Tire. While its cup runneth over with all manner of Maxxis tech, this little enduro pill's active ingredient is its Double Down armor, which involves two layers of 120 TPI casing and a butyl insert for gravity-grade protection at an all-mountain weight. Take two and meet us at the trailhead in the morning. Despite not measuring in the 2. 8in range, the Minion WT still accommodates the current trend of wider rims with an equally expanded tread pattern. The tweaked design lets the tire sit fat without the risk of the shoulder knobs migrating to areas of trail contact that they're not meant for -- a distinct possibility with narrow tires on wide rims. This preserves the rolling speed and cornering confidence that keep us coming back to the dual-compound Minion party, and it also makes the DHF model's reliability on soggy trails that much more appealing. Sitting fat also equates to more air volume, which in turn makes for a plusher, less flat-prone, and higher traction ride -- all of which properties are further boosted by running the Minion tubeless. This particular Minion also features Maxxis' 3C Maxx Grip compound blend, which involves a harder base layer and progressively softer outer layers to maintain durability and preserve grip and trail feel. Like the Double Down puncture-resistance, 3C Maxx Grip is typically seen on Maxxis' DH line, so it's welcome medicine for any all-mountain nutter who regularly ends up on the far side of the ragged edge.

Somewhere between plus-sized and XC-skinny, between puncture-prone garbage and prohibitively expensive race tires, there is a happy trail rubber medium. We call that place the 27. 5in Maxxis Minion DHF WT Wide Trail EXO/TR Tire. The Minion WT is 2. 5in wide, so it doesn't have the prohibitive clearance issues that plague 3in plus-size tires, and it's got a hit of sidewall protection to keep it rolling through all-mountain terrain. Despite not measuring in the 2. 8in range, the Minion WT still accommodates the current trend of wider rims with a tread pattern designed to sit fat without the risk of the shoulder knobs migrating onto the center rolling surface -- a distinct possibility with narrower tires mounted on wide rims. This preserves the rolling speed and cornering grip that keeps us coming back to the dual-compound Minion party, and makes the DHF model's reliability on soggy trails that much more appealing. Sitting fat also equates to more air volume, which in turn makes for a plusher, less flat-prone, and higher traction ride -- all of which properties are further boosted by running the Minion tubeless. This particular Minion also features Maxxis' EXO cut- and abrasion-resistant sidewalls, which are supple enough to maintain trail feel but tough enough to take a rocky beating so you don't end up with sliced rubbers while shredding some pointy rocks and sharp-edged drops.

Maxxis Minion FBF EXO/TR Tire - 26in Maxxis Minion FBF EXO/TR Tire - 26in
Maxxis' cult favorite tire, the Minion, is working its way into every cycling tire category the company offers. And we think the reasons are obvious to anyone who's ridden it. The front-specific Minion FBF EXO/TR 26in fat bike Tire retains all of the go-anywhere burliness and reliability that made the enduro version so popular, but it's adapted to the world of snow and sand. The Minion FBF offers an impressive mix of grip and speed because it's constructed with the same aggressive, squared-off Minion DHF tread blocks you'll recognize from trail and enduro versions of the tire. Like those other iterations, it stays glued during trail or off-trail rides through mushy snow and mud and is especially adept at holding its own while cornering. On smooth singletrack, groomed snow, and the occasional paved trailhead approach, the 120 TPI will keep the tires from dragging.

Featuring a smooth diamond-knurled tread pattern, the Re-Fuse is composed of dual-compound rubber and is constructed with a durable 60 TPI to make it a reliable training companion. For added durability on trails with sharp rocks and obstacles, Maxxis includes its MaxxShield bead-to-bead protection. Whether you do the bulk of your training off-road or enjoy being able to hop onto an unpaved road during your road ride, the Re-Fuse makes a well-adapted option for gravel and smooth singletrack.

Maxxis Rekon 3C/EXO/TR Tire - 27.5+ Maxxis Rekon 3C/EXO/TR Tire - 27.5+
The Maxxis Rekon 3C/EXO/TR 27. 5+ Tire boasts beefy, widely spaced knobs built to carve all manner of trail conditions. With siped knob edges and ramped middle knobs, the Rekon pairs high-traction grip with fast rolling speed, and wraps it all up in a plush plus-sized package to smoothly rock everything from hard pack to loose and dusty. This tubeless-ready tire mixes biting knobs with three rubber compounds to create a truly versatile ride. The supple 120 TPI casing is wrapped in a tread pattern that favors loose conditions without slowing you down on hardpack. It features moderate spacing between the center lugs and closely clustered side knobs for sure cornering bite. Those center lugs are also ramped to resist folding under braking and acceleration and the 3C Max Speed compound bridges the traction gap from packed to loose terrain. Maxxis fashions the center knobs from a harder compound to resist wear and flex while the supple casing allows the tire to conform to irregularities in the trail. The softer side compound hooks-up and grips while leaning through switchbacks or bogging through loose trails. As a result, you gain a positive traction over wet roots and rocks and seamless transitions from straightaways into turns.

Maxxis Snyper Tire - 24in Maxxis Snyper Tire - 24in
The 24in Snyper Tire is Maxxis' nod to the BMX cyclist whose tastes skew away from the urban alley cat scene and toward the dirtier side of things. Manicured skatepark sessions are fine, but trying to snipe lines between birthday party crews on two-wheeled scooters does eventually get old. When the soccer moms and scooter groms runneth over, retiring to the dirt park is the only recourse, and no tire handles that transition better than the dual-compound Snyper. The hard center line reduces rolling resistance to gather speed between ramps, and the softer shoulders grip in turns or during sketchy landings when you don't quite complete the full rotation.

Maxxis Tomahawk 3C/EXO/TR Tire - 29in Maxxis Tomahawk 3C/EXO/TR Tire - 29in
It's hard to ignore the fact that the bike industry has been churning out a new class of discipline-bending, do-it-all trail and enduro machines with fewer limitations than ever. Fast climbs, cushy descents, and everything in between are par for the course for these new unshakeable monsters. If you're going to be riding one, it deserves the right set of boots to best put its abilities on display, and Maxxis' Tomahawk 3C/EXO/TR Tire aims to be that pair of boots. Designed to succeed throughout a huge range of all-mountain rowdiness, the Tomahawk is an aggressive, adaptable tire begging to earn a spot on the shuttle for your next ride. Equipping a tire to roll quickly on straightaways and corner without skidding out generally means knobs with a slightly lower center profile paired with more aggressive sidewall knobs. Maxxis took this strategy to the extreme on the Tomahawk, giving it center tread that looks like it's been flattened with a hammer, towered over by a set of squared-off side knobs eager to latch onto the trail on loose switchbacks. This drastic combination results in a tire that's as well prepared to fly over the flats as it is to barrel down rock-encrusted descents, with the added reassurance of Maxxis' EXO protection warding off flats. The triple compound, or 3C Maxx Terra, construction Maxxis uses gives the tire the consistency to back up the knobs' highly specialized positioning; harder rubber along the center softens to suppler material on the sidewalls for confident cornering and speedy fire road transitions.

Maxxis Tomahawk Double Down/TR Tire - 27.5in Maxxis Tomahawk Double Down/TR Tire - 27.5in
Maxxis' Tomahawk Double Down is designed for all-mountain and enduro riding just like its sibling, the Tomahawk EXO. The key difference between the two is in the casing and overall weight: Maxxis' Double Down casing compound provides slightly heavier, downhill-inspired protection for the Tomahawk Double Down than EXO. This new compound has a TPI of 120 compared to the EXO's 60, and because of that, the tires' claimed weight tips the scales at just over 1,000g. Besides the casing, the overall features of the two Tomahawk models are the same. The Double Down adeptly navigates muddy trails and pounds rocks using consistent, widely spaced knobs throughout, while the square profile makes the tires quick and reliable while cornering. Maxxis ensures that the tires' centers are fast-rolling for dry conditions as well -- with the added assurance of the Double Down casing, you can add these to your already versatile 27. 5 and know they'll be ready for anything.

Maxxis Tomahawk EXO/TR Tire - 27.5in Maxxis Tomahawk EXO/TR Tire - 27.5in
If you're riding a 27. 5, you might as well have a tire in your lineup that is as much of a delight on trail rides as the bike itself. Maxxis' Tomahawk EXO TR Tire is made out of Maxxis' 3C Maxx Terra rubber compound, which falls in the middle of the brand's offerings in terms of grip and rolling resistance, so it will go when you want it to and hang on without feeling sluggish on more technical terrain. The center tread offers low rolling resistance while you accelerate along hardpack and singletrack, while the square profile and tall side knobs provide confidence as you test your 27. 5 's handling on tight switchbacks over unpredictable root lattices. Maxxis kept the knobs open to allow the tires to clear debris and mud, and reinforced the sidewalls with EXO sidewall protection to help you avoid flats.

Michelin Cyclocross Jet S Tire - Clincher Michelin Cyclocross Jet S Tire - Clincher

When the going gets dusty and hard packed, look no further than the Michelin Cyclocross Jet S Clincher Tire. The Jet S features low-profile directional tread across the center of the tire that rolls fast and efficiently while providing sure grip during accelerations and steep power climbs. Beefier knobs at the edges sit at the ready to dig in and grab through corners and loose sections for confident handling through dry, technical courses.

Michelin Power All-Season Tire - Clincher Michelin Power All-Season Tire - Clincher
Michelin's long-awaited update to the aging monarch of its road tire line justifies its slow arrival with a host of gains over its Pro4 predecessor. The Power line consists of four tires: Competition, Endurance, All-Season, and Protection Plus, each constructed using a slightly different composition, with a different type of riding in mind. The Power All-Season Clincher counts wet, slick roads as its preferred riding surface, so if a day of training through rain or fog is just another day for you, the All-Season's focus on traction over low rolling resistance will fit your everyday routine well. Michelin uses a new resin in the All-Season's Grip Compound, which gives the tire a claimed 15% improvement on slippery surfaces than its preceding Pro4 wet-condition tire. The resin does add some weight to the design, but when considering the material's ability to increase grip on messy, slippery surfaces at low temperatures, while offering gains in puncture resistance and longevity, the weight increase doesn't come close to overshadowing the benefits. The tire's wet-road pedigree is also rooted in a new tread profile, which boasts better side grip and a progressive tread void.

Michelin Power Competition Tire - Clincher Michelin Power Competition Tire - Clincher
A few years after the introduction of its Pro4 tire line, Michelin is attracting attention for the arrival of Pro4's successor, the Power Competition Tire. Power took its time getting here, evolving from Michelin's moto GP tires of the same name, but it looks to have been worth the wait. The entire Power line boasts quantifiable gains compared to its aging predecessor -- delivering improvements in rolling resistance, puncture protection, and grip -- and each different model is built using a slightly different formula to suit it best to its specific discipline. In the case of the Competition, this entails a focus on lower rolling resistance, dependable puncture protection, supple grip for hard cornering, and -- of course -- competition-grade speed. After extensive testing against the Pro4 Service Course tires, Michelin's everyday training tire, the Competition was found to provide a 10-watt improvement in performance, equating to significant time gains at speed. (We'd be remiss if we didn't note that the comparison was between a racing-specific tire and an everyday training tire.) Michelin doesn't give detailed information about the Competition's composition, but we do know that it uses resin-reinforced rubber known as Race Compound to construct the Competition, giving it rolling resistance improvements and improved durability that justify a slightly heavier weight.

Michelin Power Endurance Tire - Clincher Michelin Power Endurance Tire - Clincher
New not only in name but in function, Michelin's Power Endurance Clincher Tire line replaces its Pro4 tire line for 2016 and boldly promises quantifiable improvements in rolling resistance, puncture protection, grip, and overall longevity. The line comprises four tires, including the Competition, Endurance, All-Season, and Protection Plus, with each offering a slightly different blend of features suited to different riding situations. As its name suggests, the Endurance Clincher Tire addresses longevity and puncture protection the most, relying on Michelin's brand new X-Miles rubber compound to stand up to less-than-ideal road conditions so that you don't have to wince and prepare for the worst every time you ride along a shoulder shimmering with unavoidable shards of glass. According to Michelin, the difference measures a 20% improvement, which is further complemented by an all-new tread design for this year known as Grip Design. Though the goal with the Endurance was improved durability, Michelin didn't want it to come at the expense of grip and speed, so the new tread profile aims to provide confidence-inspiring grip around the corners and along winding descents. The Endurance manages to strike a valuable balance for cyclists who spend their time riding in variable road conditions but for whom speed is still an important factor, offering a faster ride than the Protection Plus and All-Season Tires, but a longer-lasting, more dependable one than the Competition.

Michelin Power Protection + Tire - Clincher Michelin Power Protection + Tire - Clincher
You treat your road bike like it can ride over just about any road surface, and for the most part, it can. Though you've been tempted towards the gravel path, you've stuck with your tried-and-true road geometry, and weathered the consequences of choosing to ride on torn-up, rutted, chip-sealed roads to enjoy the pastoral scenes and rolling rural hillsides to which they often lead. Because of this, you spend just about as much time stopped on the shoulders of those roads changing flats as you do riding them, and if you'd like to change that pattern, investing in Michelin's brand new Power Protection Plus Clincher Tire would make a good place to start. As the long-awaited successor to Michelin's aging Pro4 line, Power delivers four brand new road tire options, each situated neatly in a discipline-specific category but with the entire line displaying improvements in grip, rolling resistance, and puncture protection. Michelin designed the Protection Plus to be the go-to tire for your rides along the most neglected back roads, constructing it with a resin-reinforced rubber compound known as Bi-Compound, then reinforcing it with protection in the form of its Bead-to-Bead Protek technology and beefed-up sidewalls. This composition, according to Michelin, gives the Protection Plus 20% more flat-resisting puncture protection than any of the brand's other tires, past or present, and though many have assumed the Protection Plus was designed to be a gravel tire, Michelin insists that was created for use on the roads. Like the rest of the Power line, it does enjoy improvements to rolling resistance and grip, but the flat resistance is the shining achievement of this model.

Michelin Pro4 Endurance Tire - Clincher Michelin Pro4 Endurance Tire - Clincher
Long miles and winter training rides call for a tire that won't give up the ghost at the first sight of road debris. The Michelin Pro4 Endurance Clincher Tire steps in to provide exceptional flat protection and durability to power long endurance road races or tackle all those off-season base miles. The Pro4 Endurance is the marathon runner of Michelin's Pro4 lineup, built to churn out the miles with grit and perseverance. Featuring a high-density HDProtection belt across the entire casing, the Pro4 has a claimed additional 40% flat resistance compared to competitors. Of course, the especially pernicious bits of road detritus (goat heads, staples, and virtually anything when it's raining) that will still puncture that belt; however, those same malfeasants will also flat harder, less forgiving tires. The Pro4 Endurance balances puncture resistance with road feel as well as almost any endurance tire we've ridden. Michelin knows that we don't just want a tire that reduces flats. We also want it to go fast. While the advanced protection brings with it a smidgeon more weight compared to the Pro4 Service Course, these tires still clock in at an acceptable weight for getting up climbs. Michelin's BiCompound adds to the speed with a more rigid center for high durability, low rolling resistance, and just the right grip for stable braking on dry and wet roads. At the shoulder, a slightly stickier rubber provides extra grip for sweeping through corners regardless of weather.

Michelin Pro4 Service Course Tire - Clincher Michelin Pro4 Service Course Tire - Clincher
The Michelin Pro3 was a pretty popular tire, but it seemed most only ran them on race day. They gripped like you wouldn't believe, but they were a bit prone to flats under normal use. Well, we're happy to report that Michelin fixed the bad, and improved the already good in the Pro4 Service Course. They've altered the rubber compound a bit and added a full-tread nylon breaker to help resist against road debris, sharp rocks, and anything else you might encounter on a normal training ride. In addition to the different rubber and anti-flat reinforcement, the Pro4 has a new shape designed to offer even more traction when the bike's leaned over in a turn. This shape, combined with the new rubber compound, adds up to a 16% increase in turning traction over the Pro3 Race --the grippiest of the Michelin tires.

Michelin Wild Grip'r Tire - 29in Michelin Wild Grip'r Tire - 29in
Modern mountain bike tires have to be versatile, as it's increasingly difficult and expensive to switch tires for different conditions. To bridge the elusive gap between buff singletrack, greasy trails, and rocky terrain, the 29-in Wild Grip'r Tire relies on a new tread design and Michelin's respected rubber expertise. A low-profile, high-durometer tire equals fast-paced fun on hard packed trails. Inversely, if that tire finds itself in mud, deft handling skills are required to keep the rubber-side down. The slightly elongated center knobs that are found on this Wild Grip'r 29er provide efficiency and control by resisting deflection under acceleration and braking on packed dirt. Yet, they're space well enough to still bite and shed on the opposite end of the spectrum. That's one way that the Wild Grip'r covers two extremes, and another is its transition knobs. These intermediate blocks are siped and variable, so they conform to irregular terrain. Meanwhile, reinforced side lugs deform less and give a positive indication of traction limits. And like the center knobs, these are all spaced to prevent traction loss due to buildup. Optimized tread is only part of the tire equation, and as aforementioned, Michelin chose a compound specific to this multi-purpose tire. This engineered rubber composite has a durometer of 63a, which marginally favors hard packed trails over grip for increased longevity. The casing is a single ply with a TPI count of 60 in order to increase durability without weighing things down. The Michelin Wild Grip'r 29in Tire has a folding Aramid bead and is available in a 29x2. 25-inch size. Please note that this tire is tubeless-ready, but it does not include either tire sealant or rim tape.

Michelin Wild Race'r Enduro Rear Tire - 27.5in Michelin Wild Race'r Enduro Rear Tire - 27.5in
When you're cleaning up your enduro rig in anticipation of summer weekend trips to dry, desert singletrack, we'd suggest you treat your hardworking bike to Michelin's 27. 5in Wild Race'r Enduro Rear Tire. By introducing such a strong rear-specific, dry condition tire, Michelin gives a nod to its past, and perhaps its future, as the reigning tire manufacturer of the mountain bike industry, showing that it's paying attention to and prepared to meet the demands of the destructive enduro set. Michelin crafts the Wild Race'r as a rear-specific tire, counting on specific construction features to create a tire with confidence-inspiring control and consistency rather than just relying on a firmer rubber and broad, hyperbolic generalizations. Though the Wild Race'r isn't a brand new name from Michelin, this year's version delivers a redesigned tread pattern and carcass. Michelin trusts its Gum-X rubber compound to construct the Wild Race'r, shaping the redesigned knobs along the central column of the tire to sit flush with the dirt. It manages to strike a balance between ensuring the knobs provide grip, without so much that they compromise your quickness and ability to dice through challenging, technical lines. Along the outside of the tire, 90-degree braking edges give you peace of mind while scrubbing speed, lending the velocity-hungry tire consistent control whether you're descending or taking advantage of its nimbleness and inclination to go fast over cracked earth on long, dusty climbs.

Michelin Wild Race'r Tire - 29in Michelin Wild Race'r Tire - 29in
When speed is on the menu, low-profile knobs are essential to prevent energy loss. This often comes as a sacrifice in the traction department. But, with the Michelin Wild Race'r 29in Tire, intelligent knob construction reduces that negative impact. To start with, this tubeless twenty-niner tire's hollow, diamond-shaped blocks alternate between being bridged together and being solo. This happens along the center tread zone, and it helps to reduce flex under acceleration and braking. Additionally, it enables a conforming level of flex when needed. Meanwhile, the bridging ties into the side transition blocks. This gives the tire consistent traction during turn-in, and it ramps up as lean angle is increased. The enhanced traction is from more aggressive knobs, with additional siping. Along the Wild Race'r Tire's outer-edge, reinforced triangles dig in to loose soil for confidence inspiring handling. The Michelin Wild Race'r 29in Tire has a folding UST Aramid bead and is available in either a 2. 1 or 2. 25-inch width. Please note that this tire is sold individually, and that it does not include either tire sealant or rim tape.

Schwalbe Jumbo Jim 26in Fatbike Tire Schwalbe Jumbo Jim 26in Fatbike Tire
The German compound warlocks at Schwalbe rarely make a mistake, but we think we've found one in the Jumbo Jim 26in Fatbike Tire. We find no fault with the tire's construction, but the name should've been more along the lines of Hungry Hungry Jimbo, because Jim approaches soft surfaces like snow, sand, and boggy muck with all the delicate reserve of a plastic hippo frantically gobbling up marbles. Any outing with Jim quickly turns into an all he can eat buffet. And he can eat a lot. The fact that Jim is Schwalbe's first foray into fatness may come as a surprise, but the professionally meticulous quality of the build certainly won't. He's made with Schwalbe's PaceStar compound, which features an easy-rolling base layer covered by material with a graduated durometer: harder and more efficient in the center strip and softer shoulders for better grip while cornering in the deep stuff. While PaceStar is general across the Jumbo Jim family, we are carrying two levels of puncture resistance. The LiteSkin option is, well, light, and tires with LiteSkin instead of SnakeSkin weigh a claimed 100 grams less per tire. The SnakeSkin option puts more emphasis on resisting punctures, especially in the monofilament sidewalls, and its Tubeless Easy makes for a smoother conversion to a tubeless set up. No more shaking, re-inflation, or constant re-application of tire sealant, just put Jim on and get gobbling.

If the construction of Schwalbe's 29in Magic Mary Tires is any indication, then their namesake is less peaceful Madonna and more enduro ripper queen. Mary starts with Schwalbe's Snakeskin fabric, which reinforces her dramatically light tire body in order to maintain a claimed 885g per tire while preserving the kind of puncture protection you'd expect from a miraculously capable, true all-mountain tire. Mary is also tubeless-ready, which confers yet more weight savings, and Schwalbe's TrailStar compound actually comprises three different materials: a supple, fast base; a mid-grip center strip; and high-grip shoulders. The knobs themselves are spacious, tall, flat-topped, and fairly broad, which means that Magic Mary is well suited to just about anything a trail can through her way. Hard-pack corners, rooty trail furniture, technical rock gardens -- Mary is the one tire you'll need for a World Cup weekend or a season of all-mountain riding.

Schwalbe Magic Mary Tire -27.5in Schwalbe Magic Mary Tire -27.5in
Downhill, enduro, all-mountain, it doesn't matter--if you need grip, durability, and the confidence to push it, shoe up with Schwalbe's Magic Mary 27. 5in Tire. Just look at it: giant blocky tread eats technical trails and loose corners for lunch, and the tough bead locks onto your rim like a grappling hook onto a castle wall. Schwalbe serves up the Mary in two versions, a SnakeSkin and a SuperG. SnakeSkin's made with Schwalbe's original puncture-resistant TrailStar ruber, while the SuperG loads up with a bombproof VertStar compound that is tough enough to ride down trails made of nails and broken glass (don't actually do that, though).

Schwalbe Nobby Nic SnakeSkin Tubeless Easy Tire - 26in Schwalbe Nobby Nic SnakeSkin Tubeless Easy Tire - 26in
Schwalbe's Nobby Nic Tire is a perennial favorite, and for good reason. Its versatile tread makes it keen to tackle a wide variety of terrain types, and now the newest Nic is making it even better, even for the 26-inch mountain bike wheel. For the third generation, Nic's proven, all-condition tread pattern gets mildly revised, with new slits in the blocks along the center and shoulders. The pattern is equal parts fast-rolling and earth-grabbing, comfortable on varsity-level technical terrain but ready to race on a more hardpacked course, as well. Also new this year, Nic's tubeless-readiness has changed names, from TL to TL Easy, emphasizing what Schwalbe wants its customers to know it's one of the easiest tires to install and set up tubeless. The tough SnakeSkin carcass returns, but this year it's also joined by an even tougher Double Defense casing version, armoring you against punctures like no Schwalbe ever has before.

Schwalbe Nobby Nic SnakeSkin Tubeless Easy Tire - 29in Schwalbe Nobby Nic SnakeSkin Tubeless Easy Tire - 29in
Schwalbe added some minor improvements to the Nobby Nic 29-inch tires for 2015, beefing up one of its most popular tires without ruining a good thing. The all-condition tread patterns have new slits in the blocks around the center and the shoulders--a minor improvement. This tread pattern is fast-rolling and earth-grabbing--equally at home on technical trails or hardpacked courses. The Nobby Nics use improved SnakeSkin with Double Defense for even more armor against the sharp things you roll over on the trail. Schwalbe doesn't think you should have to worry about punctures, so it changed the name of its tubeless-ready tires to "TL Easy"--the Nobby Nics are some of the easiest tires to install and set up tubeless.

Schwalbe Nobby Nic Tire - 27.5 Plus Schwalbe Nobby Nic Tire - 27.5 Plus
Nobby Nic has been around long enough that he has a pretty confident swagger when he shows up at the trailhead for a ride, but that doesn't make him any less popular. He's back again to show us all he's not afraid to embrace new trends, now available in two 27. 5 Plus sizes so he can take on rowdier rides with the same type of poise we've all come to expect from him. Nic hangs onto his famously grippy tread pattern, which remains equal parts fast-rolling and earth-grabbing, so he's at home blasting through rough stuff or along hard-packed trails. Not unlike the more admired dirt denizens of our local scene, Nic moves between enduro rides, all-mountain jaunts, and XC races with confidence, and his SnakeSkin sidewall dutifully defends against punctures as you careen over bumps, testing Nic's limits. Slightly softer compared to PaceStar, Nic's TrailStar triple compound rubber allows him to navigate just about any surface with ease. Cconverting Nic to tubeless is as simple as ever, and according to Schwalbe, he's one of the easiest tires to set up tubeless. It even gave Nic the middle name TL Easy just to show how much they believe it.

Schwalbe Pro One Tire - Tubeless Schwalbe Pro One Tire - Tubeless
Schwalbe's recently updated tubeless road tire, the Pro One Tubeless Tire, sheds weight and rolling resistance compared to the original One tire. Given these advantages, the Pro One makes a compelling case for racing on tubeless tires, and we can only hope to see more race wheels offered in the future that are compatible with them. To improve upon an already solid tire, Schwalbe started with triple compound rubber, adding Snakebite and Sidewall protection that teams with a liquid, tubeless sealant to retain air pressure over time and help resist punctures. The firm center strip improves the rolling resistance by a claimed ten percent while softer shoulders grip the tarmac for control while cornering at high speeds. Schwalbe's MicroSkin construction adds durability to the Pro One, helping the tire resist ill-intentioned debris on the roads so you get through your race flat-free, while the tubeless construction allows you to race with the tires at lower air pressure and eliminates friction between the tube and tire that can slow you down.

Schwalbe Racing Ralph Tire -27.5in Schwalbe Racing Ralph Tire -27.5in
To make the Racing Ralph the ideal cross country tire, Schwalbe uses the PaceStar compound for the tread. By using a center strip with a medium durometer and shoulders that have a softer durometer, the Ralph is able to roll fast on straights while gripping turns so you won't have to sit on your brakes. It's basically free speed. And, so that a flat won't end your day, Schwalbe's Ralph comes in two different levels of puncture resistance. If your ride or race covers rocky sharp granite and cacti, the SnakeSkin is the optimal choice. This option makes tubeless conversion simple with no need for sealant. If your trail is slightly less "sharp," the LiteSkin is ideal; this option also takes 70 grams off the weight of each tire.

Schwalbe Racing Ralph Tire -29in Schwalbe Racing Ralph Tire -29in
The Schwalbe Racing Ralph Tire is built for cross-country speed on race day. There's even talk around the office that it might be the fastest cross-country 29er tire out there. Schwalbe's PaceStar triple compound uses an easy-rolling layer as the base, with a harder compound on the tire's center strip to lower rolling resistance and translate to more speed in the straight sections. The tire shoulders are made of a softer compound for extra grip when hammering corners or navigating technical terrain. The Racing Ralph is most at home flying down a fast, clean course to victory. Schwalbe gives riders two options for puncture resistance with the Racing Ralph. The LiteSkin version is the lighter of the two, at a claimed 70 grams less per tire than the SnakeSkin. The SnakeSkin version has better puncture resistance, though, especially in its monofilament sidewalls. The Tubeless Easy SnakeSkin also makes the conversion to tubeless smooth and hassle-free.

Schwalbe Rocket Ron Tire - 27.5 Plus Schwalbe Rocket Ron Tire - 27.5 Plus
The Rocket Ron 27. 5 Plus Tire features the same PaceStar Triple Compound that makes its more svelte sibling ideal for XC racing -- there's just more of both to love. PaceStar Triple is Schwalbe's solution to the classic compound conundrum. Instead of forcing us to negotiate every trail situation with the same durometer of rubber, PaceStar Triple involves strategic hardness at specific points on the tire ranging from a hard, fast-rolling centerline to grippy, smart-cornering shoulders. Schwalbe also gave the chubby Ron the same low-profile tread and U-block shoulder knobs of the skinny Ron, just in a higher quantity to span the tire's bigger waistline. These tread blocks are angled at 20 degrees or so towards the outside of the tire. Compared to the Racing Ralph, the slightly more prominent blocks have been spaced a bit further apart to achieve more void space. This is part of the reason that it self-cleans in mucky stuff so you can continue to have traction to drive down the trail and keep the bike upright. A small sipe doesn't quite divide the block, creating the "U" shape. They work to counteract the lateral forces endured when cornering to maintain traction and to keep the bike stable. We're offering the tire with either a LiteSkin or SnakeSkin carcass. Depending on your choice, you'll get a faster, lighter race tire or a tire that can train and race with more puncture resistance. The LiteSkin option is, well, lighter -- by a claimed 60g per tire -- and features less rolling resistance on fast hardpack. The SnakeSkin option is admittedly heavier, but it gives much better puncture resistance, especially in the monofilament sidewalls, which will come into play on the sharp edges of rock gardens. Regardless of which you choose, Schwalbe's Tubeless Easy design makes for a smooth, hassle-free conversion to a tubeless set up. No more shaking, re-inflation, or constant re-application of tire sealant.

Depending on your choice, you'll get a faster, lower weight race tire or a tire that can train and race with more puncture resistance. The LiteSkin option is, well, lighter. It's also faster rolling and weighs a claimed 60 grams fewer per tire. The SnakeSkin option is admittedly heavier, but it gives much better puncture resistance, especially in the monofilament sidewalls, and the Tubeless Easy SnakeSkin makes for a smooth, hassle-free conversion to a tubeless setup. Schwalbe Rocket Ron Tire - 29in Schwalbe Rocket Ron Tire - 29in
The PaceStar Triple Compound that Schwalbe puts on the 29in Rocket Ron Tire is actually three compounds combined. Schwalbe recognizes that one compound isn't sufficient for all applications, so it gave the Rocket Ron different properties at different parts of the tire for a fast-rolling center strip, tacky shoulders for grabbing corners and trail furniture, and durable sidewalls. Whatever your XC or trail needs, the Rocket Ron is ready to rock. The tread profile falls between the crass lumpiness of Schwalbe's Nobby Nic and the speed-focused Racing Ralph, hitting the sweet spot of traction, debris clearance, and low rolling resistance. Schwalbe Super Swan Tubeless Tire Schwalbe Super Swan Tubeless Tire
In a poem about wild swans, Yeats describes the ideal 'cross weather: "The trees are in their autumn beauty, / The woodland paths are dry, / Under the October twilight." We can't speak for the literary leanings of the engineers at Schwalbe, but we choose to believe there's a connection between that poem and the Super Swan Tubeless Tire, which is made for pure cyclocross speed in October races. The spacious, aggressive tread pattern privileges clean center rolling while the open, U-block shoulder knobs maintain grip and shuttle away soft matter in mucky corners and sand pits. The knobs may not "climb the air" like Yeats' swans, but they do punch up grassy mounds and carry speed through sketchy sections of terrain, both of which are scenarios where Schwalbe's PaceStar Triple compound shines. PaceStar Triple is Schwalbe's solution to the classic compound conundrum. Instead of forcing us to negotiate every aspect of a course with the same rubber, PaceStar Triple involves strategic durometers at specific points on the tire ranging from a hard, fast-rolling centerline to grippy, smart-cornering shoulders. Compared to the dual compound construction (which is plenty impressive in its own right), Schwalbe's triple compound maximizes speed whether you're mashing across paved transitions or trying to close a gap while negotiating snaking, cambered lines when, to misquote Yeats, the field "suddenly mounts / And scatters wheeling in great broken rings." Of course, the added puncture-resistance of tubeless means your tires stand a better chance of remaining unbroken, improving your chances of wheeling at the front rather than languishing in the scattered back.

Schwalbe Thunder Burt Tire - 29in Schwalbe Thunder Burt Tire - 29in
Schwalbe's tire lineup is relatively clear and linear, with models that make it fairly obvious what their intended place or purpose is upon first sight, with little need for more research. We like this about Schwalbe's approach, and a great example of this is the Schwalbe Thunder Burt Tire. Designed as a hybrid between the virtually slick Furious Fred XC tire and the Racing Ralph technical trail/XC tire, Thunder Burt toes the line with a tread pattern that can fly over hardpack but still handle semi-loose and loamy terrain. This light and fast tire, coming in at roughly 395 grams, makes it ideal for racing and going fast in dry, hard conditions. The tread pattern Schwalbe used is its PaceStar Triple Compound with a hard center tread that gets progressively softer compounds toward the edge. This provides faster rolling characteristics with excellent cornering traction. The minimal centerline tread means low rolling resistance, and, with the U-block shoulder tread, it still holds its own in the turns or in deeper loose stuff. These tread blocks are angled toward the outside of the tire and work to counteract the lateral forces endured when cornering in order to maintain traction and to keep the bike stable. Schwalbe's EVO compound is the lightest and fastest it makes, while the SnakeSkin version is a bit heavier, with the tradeoff being added protection against punctures. We'd recommend the latter for tubeless setups.

Vittoria Corsa G Plus Tire - Clincher Vittoria Corsa G Plus Tire - Clincher
Anyone with a passing interest in cycling tech has probably been exposed to the hype surrounding Vittoria's new quadruple compound design, the heart of which is a thin, nearly transparent layer of carbon called graphene. The claims made for this material have been impressive, but we weren't sure what to think until we got our hands on Vittoria's Corsa G Plus Clincher Tires. Vittoria blends four rubber compounds with the inclusion of graphene for the Corsa G, and, without throwing any hyperbole around, we'd say the difference is very noticeable. The tires' 4C ISOtech construction, which allows for separate base and surface compounds to be strategically placed throughout the tire, made cornering feel smooth and consistent while the fast-rolling center reduces the atrophy of watts on straightaways. Vittoria claims that the elasticity and carbon construction of graphene creates an incredibly durable tire, but for even more reassurance, it adds KEVLAR to further reinforce the core spun K casing. With multiple cotton fibers twisted together to create one yarn, core spun casings are significantly stronger than typical casings, and they don't add additional weight to the tire. The Corsa G's luxurious 320 TPI is a final element that sets it apart from other tires. TPI measures the number of threads per inch in a tire's casing, with higher counts equating to a lighter tire with a suppler ride. Whether it's due to the high TPI, the claimed benefits of graphene, or a combination of both, we can attest to the Corsa G's supple road feel and ability to smooth chattering chip seal surfaces. In the clincher version, each Corsa G Plus will add between 235g and 265g to your frame, depending on size, and the tires' classic, gum-wall aesthetic makes them an eye-catching addition to your frame.

Vittoria Corsa SL Tubular Tire Vittoria Corsa SL Tubular Tire
Vittoria's Corsa CX is easily one of the most popular tubulars for pro racers, so how was the Italian brand supposed to make it better' It was no small challenge, but Vittoria stepped up to the plate, adding an even faster rolling rubber compound, and calling it the Corsa SL Tubular Tire. And like the CX, you'll find a buttery-smooth 320 TPI cotton casing for fast rolling and light weight. So, when you need to go fast and you're done making excuses, this is your tire. The Corsa SL builds on the heritage of Vittoria's perennial favorite, the Corsa CX. And while the CX is a longstanding favorite of both pros and amateurs alike, the SL employs a faster rolling compound down the centerline, making this the fastest rolling tire that Vittoria offers. As with the CX, the SL employs a dual compound tread, which balances the harder centerline with softer shoulders in order to boost grip. They're not quite as grippy as the CX, but the SL still provides plenty of traction for leaning into turns at high speeds without any reason to hesitate. And now that we have your attention, let's dig into the SL's construction. Vittoria gave this tire a 320TPI casing composition, meaning that the sidewalls are comprised of 320 threads per inch. And if you're wondering why there are 'threads,' this is because the Corsa SL is a cotton tire. But, don't think that this decreases durability. In fact, Vittoria used a corespun, or 'polycore,' technique for the casing's construction. Essentially, this means that the casing fibers are made by twisting staple cotton fibers around a central filament core, creating one yarn from multiple fibers. As a result, the material is between 40 and 50% stronger than typically spun materials, while retaining a similar, if not lower, overall weight. Additionally, the 320TPI cotton casing provides the ideal stiffness-to-weight ratio for the SL. By this, we mean that the tire's weight hovers around 245 grams, depending on width, while still retaining a perfect ...

Vittoria Corsa Speed G Plus Tire - Clincher Vittoria Corsa Speed G Plus Tire - Clincher
With a lightweight, tubeless-ready, open tubular casing, the Vittoria Corsa Speed G Plus Clincher Tire is billed as the world's fastest clincher tire and features revolutionary graphene technology for an unprecedented mix of low rolling resistance, durability, and all-weather grip. The Corsa Speed G Plus is the culmination of a collaboration between Vittoria and an external company, Directa Plus, to adapt a carbon compound known as grapheme for use in bike tires. The resulting compound is dubbed G plus, and Vittoria claims that its inclusion significantly reduces rolling resistance while increasing the durability Vittoria has long been known for. The inclusion of graphene is credited with enhancing traction, increasing durability, and reducing rolling resistance, and its impressive strength-to-weight ratio keeps the tire well-suited for racing by reducing rotational mass. According to Vittoria, the combination of G Plus and Isogrip compounds creates a tire surfacing that also rolls fast in both dry and wet conditions for confident cornering and handling no matter what nature comes up with when you're battling it out on rolling country roads. Vittoria claims that the elasticity and carbon construction of graphene creates an incredibly durable tire, but for even more reassurance it utilizes a corespun casing to increase the tire's lifespan. With multiple cotton fibers twisted together to create one yarn, core spun casings are significantly more supple than typical casings without adding unnecessary weight to the tire.

Vittoria Cross XG Pro TNT Tire - Clincher Vittoria Cross XG Pro TNT Tire - Clincher
'Cross is fun because it's unpredictable, messy, and chaotic, but you don't want to make it even tougher than it has to be by rolling on the wrong tires; too slick and you'll end up on your teakettle, too knobby and you'll feel like you're pulling a trailer behind you. Vittoria nails the perfect balance with the Cross XC Pro TNT Clincher Tire, which employs an Aramid Racing 3D rubber compound to keep you rubber-side down without adding so much resistance that you'll think you're pedaling through a sandbox. You can run it tubeless if you prefer, courtesy of Vittoria's Aramid Tubeless Talon bean (TNT tires feature 120 threads per inch, so you'll sacrifice a little bit of suppleness of the 150 TPI non-tubeless option), and the clincher design makes the Cross XG affordable and easy to maintain.

Vittoria Rubino Pro Speed G Plus Tire - Clincher Vittoria Rubino Pro Speed G Plus Tire - Clincher
Out of all of the places in the world for a revolutionary tire compound to be created and fine-tuned, we can't think of many more fitting than the shores of Lake Como. It was there that Directa Plus engineered its impossibly thin graphene compound, a virtually two-dimensional sheet of carbon that, after a recent partnership, Vittoria is now using to make tires. While new technologies are consistently touted as "the next best thing" in cycling, the enhanced properties of rubber paired with graphene makes it something we expect to see more of in the future. The Rubino Pro Speed G Plus Clincher Tire is one of the first to feature this new material with a triple compound construction that will enable you to confidently ride through a range of rainy and dry conditions you may encounter on the roads. Out of its new line of tires, Vittoria names the Rubino Pro Speed as its all-around, everyday training tire, without the pricier four-layer composition used on its more premium, race-ready siblings. While the triple compound's targeted blend of cornering confidence and low rolling resistance is important, the tire's real selling point is the graphene. In addition to making the tires more durable and more resistant to punctures, graphene's added elasticity further increases suppleness and speed, making for a tire that wears like a training tire but has the road feel of a premium racing tire.

Vredestein Black Panther Xtreme - TLR - 27.5in Tire Vredestein Black Panther Xtreme - TLR - 27.5in Tire
Unless you ride road or 'cross, Vredestein might not be an instantly recognizable name, as this company's mountain tires rarely make the swim across the pond. However, this is quickly changing as more and more of us Yanks are experiencing the quality that this century-old Dutch company is capable of. Case in point is the tubeless-ready Black Panther Xtreme 27. 5in TLR Tire. Vredestein is known for obsessing over the compositions of its rubber compounds and the way that they're applied to specific zones of the tire. It calls this Tricomp X technology, as testing has shown Vredestein engineers where specific rubber compounds and tread patterns work to provide the lowest rolling-resistance and maximum grip in all weather conditions. By using different compounds in the tread and shoulder, and combining this with a knob structure specifically suited to these compounds, the tire provides a well-balanced blend of speed, grip, and low overall weight. The Xtreme differs significantly from Vredestein's standard Black Panther and Xtrac versions, in that it uses varying knob sizes that have been arranged in a different pattern. And while the original Black Panther and Xtrac iterations employ a central row of knobs, the Xtreme uses more of a staggered arrangement with open 'pockets' down the center. Additionally, the side knobs were beefed up, growing both taller and wider in order to provide enhanced bite on the sidewalls. The advantage of this tread arrangement is that you receive improved overall grip in wet conditions, increased mud-shedding capabilities, and enhanced cornering traction in comparison to both the original and Xtrac versions. Similar to the other Black Panthers, the Xreme is UST/tubeless-ready. Vredestein also incorporated its anti-puncture system directly into the tread compound, keeping the overall weight of the tire low. The Vredestein Black Panther Xtreme 27. 5in TLR Tire is available in the color Black and in a 27. 5 x 2. 1in size.

Rather than taking the time to swap out your tires every time there's a hint of rain or a rough stretch of road on your chosen route, try wrapping your rims in the Vredestein Comp Race Tire before your next several rides or races. Versatile and hardy, the Comp Race was designed to free you from having to tailor your ride around your tire's capabilities, and it's built with a triple compound construction to keep it rolling confidently through everything from a slick, rain-drenched race course to the chip-sealed shoulders on your favorite back roads. Vredestein uses a firmer rubber along the center of the tire to keep enterprising goatheads and broken glass from stealing the air from your tubes and pairs it with softer rubber on the shoulders to give the tires a supple, controlled feel on corners. While you're rolling over ruts and grooves in the roads, the Comp Race's 120 TPI casing will allow you to coast smoothly rather than bounce over inconsistencies, preventing you from losing hard-earned speed. Finally, a woven nylon layer beneath the center tread provides an additional line of defense against road debris, leaving the less-vulnerable sidewalls free to still provide their commendable grip on corners.

Vredestein Freccia Pro Tubular Tricomp Vredestein Freccia Pro Tubular Tricomp
Everybody knows that tubular tires are the business when it comes to ride quality, but since they're decidedly more work than clinchers, you need a reliable set if you're logging training miles on them. So for everyone who rides tubulars well beyond race day, the Vredestein Freccia Pro Tubular Tricomp tire is right up your alley. It uses triple compound rubber, which is specially formulated for wet weather grip, and a reinforced casing that fights punctures, while preserving the buttery smooth ride you're after.Vredestein employs its triple compound rubber placement in the Freccia Tricomp. In case you're wondering what triple compound means, essentially, the center line of the tire is built from a harder rubber compound than the shoulders. And that means that the Freccias are fast rolling and hard wearing. However, the compound employed for the center line wouldn't provide the aggressive cornering grip that's needed from an all-weather training tire, so a softer compound is used in the shoulders to boost cornering grip, and accordingly, cornering confidence. The 220 TPI tubular casing has a relatively high thread count, which helps these tires to roll fast over varying road surfaces. Basically, a higher thread count tire has a more supple casing, so the tire is able to deform with less resistance. The benefit is that instead of bouncing, the tire is able to roll through irregularities in the road surface, so you'll go faster with less energy spent. Adding to the training utility of this tire is a polyamide woven layer underneath the tread, which protects against punctures from the road debris that you'll no doubt encounter. But unlike many other puncture-resistant tires, this layer does not extend into the sidewalls. That allows the sidewall of the tire to deform naturally, which means that you'll get puncture resistance while still enjoying the smooth ride provided by the supple casing. The Vredestein Freccia Pro Tubular Tricomp tire is available in the size ...

WTB Breakout TCS Tire - 27.5in WTB Breakout TCS Tire - 27.5in
You're not riding with training wheels anymore (we assume), so ditch your slow, cautious, smooth-as-a-baby's-bottom tires for the gnarly, nobbly burliness of the WTB Breakout TCS 27. 5in Tire. The Breakout is large-and-in-charge 2. 5in width and oversized edge knobs keep you gripping like a maniac when you lean into turns, but the fast-rolling belts of center tread help you keep up a good clip when you're climbing or hammering down rolling trails. This particular Breakout comes in two versions, the FR (fast rolling) and HG (high grip). Both use WTB's extra-tough Enduro casing for durability, but the FR checks in at 43g lighter by substituting a lighter, faster Dual DNA rubber for the HG's burlier Gravity DNA compound. If you're riding more XC and trail, the Dual DNA is what you want, but the Gravity DNA is ideal for the more enduro-inclined among us.

WTB Breakout TCS Tough HG Tire - 27.5in WTB Breakout TCS Tough HG Tire - 27.5in
WTB's Breakout TCS Tough HG 27. 5in Tire is a big, burly, trail-gobbling beast, with a special High Grip casing that makes short work of everything from sand to slickrock to damp ground. By using a Gravity DNA rubber compound, which layers a softer 45a rubber sheath over a harder 60a inner layer, the Breakout HG achieves a glue-like grip that the harder rubber of the Fast Rolling (FR) versions can't match. Throw in oversized edge knobs for even more cornering power, and the Breakout is a beast on any type of slick or turny terrain. It's not a one-trick grip pony, though. The center of the tire employs fast-rolling belts of lower-profile tread that help you turn the pedals over when you're keeping on the straight and fast. The Breakout Tough HG is seriously durable, too, with an Enduro casing that doubles down on the protection of the Light HG so you can tackle tough trails and rocky descents at speed without worrying about tearing your tire to shreds. It can be run with tubes or without, as well, depending on your preference, because the TCS aramid bead will hug the rim no matter how you're set up.

WTB Cross Boss TCS Light FR Tire - Clincher WTB Cross Boss TCS Light FR Tire - Clincher
California-based WTB created its Cross Boss for riding fast and railing corners with precision. This tubeless-ready tire performs best in dry to damp conditions and on anything from hardpack to loam. WTB leaned on its proven Dual DNA rubber compound for the Boss, which blends FR (fast rolling) rubber for the center and softer rubber on the sides for the ideal blend of speed and grip. Use it with equal confidence in your next race or out on light singletrack; the even center tread shelf was designed for smooth, consistent acceleration, with more aggressive side knobs and defined cornering channels to give grip on turns. The side knobs, though taller than the center tread, are spaced wider apart to keep the tires free from mud and debris. At a claimed weight of 400g, the Cross Boss fits on a variety of rims with ease and gives plenty of room for modifying tire pressure.

WTB Nano TCS Light FR Tire - Clincher WTB Nano TCS Light FR Tire - Clincher
Whether your adventure of choice includes rolling miles of gravel farm roads, hard-packed singletrack, dusty desert fire roads, or just a random mix of terrain, the WTB Nano TCS Light FR Clincher Tire has it covered. Although it's billed as a cyclocross tire, the 40mm width limits its utility for racing and we think this tire really shines while exploring the wild on off-road terrain. With a tread pattern that looks a bit like a miniaturized version of a hard-gripping trail tire, this tire provides sure grip on loose surfaces while its Dual DNA compound makes for a smooth, durable ride. What makes the Nano the legend it is comes down to that innovative tread pattern. One glance and you can see that it's unlike anything else. The center is made from a fast-rolling 60 durometer compound with a slightly elevated rib to maintain virtually constant contact with the ground, which makes keeping speed over hardpack or even pavement a breeze. Move toward the shoulders, however, and you'll find a softer, grippy, 50 durometer compound with pronounced, staggered rectangular knobs that bite hard into looser terrain to enable controlled cornering and responsive braking. The high-volume casing and relatively square profile equate to a smooth yet efficient ride.

WTB Nine Line TCS Light Tire - 29in WTB Nine Line TCS Light Tire - 29in
Some tires are built to handle the gnarliest terrain and some are built to grip like crazy, but the WTB Nine Line TCS Light 29in Tire is built to roll like the dickens. Where burlier tires employ sticky but slow knobs, the Nine Line has slimmed-down micro blocks that provide quality side-to-side traction with uninhibited rolling speed. Harder 60a rubber in the center of the tire cruises down smooth singletrack at face-melting speeds, while a grippier 50a compound on the sides provides traction when you're leaning into turns and pedaling through corners. At 2. 25 inches wide, the Nine Line isn't the skinniest XC race tire on the market, but the width just serves to provide extra traction without slowing you down. You can run the Nine Line with tubes or without, as suits your fancy, and the TCS aramid bead won't pop off when you take a big hit. It's light, too, at just 635 grams, so you'll be able to run it on race day without feeling like you're dragging heavy training tires around with you.

WTB Ranger TCS Light Tire - 29+ WTB Ranger TCS Light Tire - 29+
WTB's Ranger TCS Light Tire is a big, cushy donut for your plus-sized wagon wheel hoops. It features medium-spaced lugs that take advantage of the tire's girth by adding traction as the tire floats over loose terrain. The Dual DNA compound further specializes the shoulders and center strip by putting softer rubber on the former and lining the latter with a harder durometer material that reduces rolling resistance when you're not cornering or wallowing in inches-deep muck or snow. The Ranger's plus-sized body is designed to keep that soft shoulder compound where it belongs--on the shoulders--even when mounted on wide, plus-sized rims.

WTB Ranger TCS Tough Tire - 27.5+ WTB Ranger TCS Tough Tire - 27.5+
We love the floaty cushion and super-glue traction of plus tires, especially for backcountry bikepacking applications. Those also happen to be the circumstances in which WTB's 27. 5+ Ranger TCS Tough Tire shines. While it's built to privilege longevity and flat-resistance over supple speed, it does share some qualities with its lighter, faster stablemate. Like the Ranger Light, the Tough model features WTB's Tubeless Compatible System (TCS) bead for easy, reliable seating along with excellent flat protection when paired with TCS sealant. It's also got a rounded profile that allows full contact for the knobs when shredding corners for better grip and greater confidence when carving the trail. Tough is no misnomer here, but you may be surprised to learn that the Ranger Tough is built with the same casing as the Ranger Light. The key difference is that WTB doubles up on it, adding a second layer to multiply the puncture resistance. In the brand's parlance, Lightweight casing x 2 = Enduro casing, and that equation was proven in development on the world circuit. That's a reassuring pedigree when you're deep in the bush on a weeklong trip, hauling 50lb of gear, and can't afford to lose a side wall to the fey folk of flat tires and capricious, sidewall-munching gremlins.

WTB Riddler TCS Light Tire - Tubeless WTB Riddler TCS Light Tire - Tubeless
WTB's original 27. 5in Riddler may be the ideal trail tire: cornering grip, straightaway speed, and a generous girth that provides comfort and grip without getting top floppy. The Riddler TCS Light Fast Clincher Tire imports those same characteristics to the gravel bike world. Its 45mm belly eats up gravel and washboard abuse while the molars on the shoulders bite into sloughy stuff and the low-profile, tightly packed center knobs maintain grippy speed across graded gravel. The compound follows suit, with WTB's dual-compound situating soft, grabby matter at the shoulders and harder, faster rubber over the center strip. The Riddler is set up to run tubeless on any UST rim with the application of a sealant. While 23 and 25mm tires can actually gain weight when run tubeless, these burly donuts definitely benefit from ditching those huge tubes. Going tubeless also lets you lower the PSI, adding additional plushness when cushion and grip are at a premium. At this point in a description, we'd typically lay out a tire's limitations; with the Riddler 45, we're finding ourselves unable to do so. Bikepacking, gravel racing, all-terrain adventure cycling--the Riddler approaches any multi-surface scenario with gusto.

Available in both 2. 25-inch and 2. 4-inch widths, the Trail Boss uses WTB's Dual DNA rubber compound, which employs harder 60a durometer rubber in the center of the tire for low-resistance rolling and softer 50a rubber at the sides for improved grip and cornering. Zipp 202 Carbon Disc Brake Road Wheel - Tubular Zipp 202 Carbon Disc Brake Road Wheel - Tubular
There's no arguing that the advent of reliable tubeless cyclocross tire technology has brought about increased access to race-worthy equipment and narrowed the gaping chasm between tube-type clinchers and tubulars. That said, tubular still reigns queen for a reason, and even the best tubeless systems can't match the supple ride or knife-like grip and control of a tubular. If you're stepping up to the elites and are serious about results, adding a pair of Zipp 202 Carbon Disc Brake Road Wheels to your race day setup is a smart choice that'll have you fighting for the win instead of fighting against your equipment's limitations. The 202 features Zipp's lowest profile rim with a 32mm depth for an ideal blend of light weight, stability, and a bit of much-appreciated aerodynamics for long, windy stretches and finishing straightaways. A maximum width of 25. 4mm sets a solid, stable platform for wide CX tires. Zipp's wind tunnel testing shows that the 202's 32mm U-shaped profile cuts through the air on flat ground as efficiently as most other 45-50mm rims, with the added advantage of a feathery light claimed weight of 1,330g to fly away from your competitors when the course pitches skyward. The 202 also incorporates an updated version of Zipp's signature Aerodynamic Boundary Layer Control (ABLC). ABLC dimpling involves strategically placed and sized dimples spread across the rim surface to smooth airflow much like a golf ball. ABLC also boasts aerodynamic advantages at real-world yaw angles of 10 to 20 degrees, which compares favorably with many competitors whose minimum drag numbers at yaw angles of five to 10 degrees rarely occur outside of a wind tunnel. In less scientific terms, these wheels perform best in the windy conditions you'll actually encounter on the roads, not on paper. At the center, Zipp uses its updated 77/177 hub set, which has improved stiffness and durability over its predecessor. Zipp Tangente Course R28 Tire - Clincher Zipp Tangente Course R28 Tire - Clincher
The Zipp Tangente Course R28 Clincher Tire provides a balanced mix of race-ready rolling speed and grip with a more wallet-friendly price point than its top-end sibling the Tangente Speed R28. While it maintains a similar profile and all-weather tread pattern, the Course R28 features a 120 TPI casing compared to the Speed's 220 TPI casing. This cedes a tiny bit of suppleness, but the Course R28 still provides sure, durable grip in both wet and dry conditions while rolling fast over rough roads. Billed as a race-worthy training tire for days when the road isn't pristine, the Course R28 utilizes its relatively high, 120 TPI nylon casing and a beefy 28mm width to soak up the bumps. The wider stance allows for lower tire pressure and an increased contact patch, which pairs with the fast rolling casing for confident grip in corners and an overall smoother ride than narrower tires. To cap things off, Zipp incorporates a tread pattern designed to shed water and maintain grip even in wet conditions.

Zipp Tangente Course Tire - Clincher Zipp Tangente Course Tire - Clincher
The name Zipp goes with fast wheels like peanut butter goes with jelly, but we don't typically associate the brand with race-ready tire options. That's changing with the updated Tangente line and its attention to both aerodynamics and low rolling resistance. Sitting in the middle of the line, the Tangente Course Clincher Tire boasts fast-rolling, wind-cutting speed with a new rubber compound formulated for impeccable handling. Billed as a race-worthy tire for days when the weather is fair and the roads are dry, the Tangente Course utilizes its relatively high, 120 TPI nylon casing for a supple ride and confident road feel. Zipp incorporates a signature rubber compound for exceptional grip to rail corners and jump on the attack, and a puncture protection strip reduces the potential for race-ending flats after you've gotten a gap. To cap things off, these tires feature what Zipp claims is an aerodynamic tread pattern. Given the manufacturer's aerodynamic pedigree, we aren't prepared to second guess that assertion.

Zipp Tangente SL Speed Tire - Tubular Zipp Tangente SL Speed Tire - Tubular
The name Zipp usually brings to mind spinning hoops of dimpled, aerodynamic speed. What you might not know is that the company also makes some fast tires. While its early tire offerings were focused almost solely on aerodynamics, the updated Tangente line takes that attention to wind-slicing speed and adds in a big dose of low rolling resistance and confident cornering with a new casing and tread compound. The Tangente SL Speed Tubular Tire sits atop the Tangente line as a race-specific tire best suited for fair weather and dry roads. The SL Speed tub utilizes a super plush 320 TPI casing made from a mix of cotton and latex for a supple ride and confident road feel. Zipp incorporates a carefully guarded rubber compound for exceptional grip to rail corners and jump on the attack, and a puncture protection belt helps to reduce the potential for race-ending flats. To cap things off, these tires feature a tread pattern that Zipp claims is designed to optimize aerodynamics. While we haven't independently verified this, we're not prepared to second guess a manufacturer whose name is largely synonymous with aerodynamic speed. We also recognize that every advantage counts when you're running on fumes, the pack is closing, and the line is still several hundred meters off. The tires are finished with Zipp's aluminum valve stem and removable core.

Zipp Tangente Speed R28 Tire - Clincher Zipp Tangente Speed R28 Tire - Clincher
While Zipp has long held a stellar reputation for churning out aerodynamic wheels, you may be less familiar with the fact that this company also makes tires. First introduced in 2007, Zipp's tires were originally laser focused on aerodynamics, which left a bit to be desired in the rolling resistance and handling categories. With the Tangente line, Zipp's focus has shifted to creating fast-rolling tires with supple grip to rail corners. The Tangente Speed R28 Clincher Tire boasts exceptional traction in both dry and wet conditions and a wide profile to roll smoothly over rough roads. Billed as a race-ready tire for days when the road isn't pristine, the Speed R28 utilizes a plush 220 TPI nylon casing and a beefy 28mm width to soak up the bumps. The wider stance allows for lower tire pressure and an increased contact patch, which pairs with the lower rolling resistance of the high TPI casing for a better grip and an overall smoother ride than narrower tires. To cap things off, Zipp incorporates a tread pattern designed to shed water and maintain grip even in wet conditions.

Zipp Tangente Speed Tire - Clincher Zipp Tangente Speed Tire - Clincher
First introduced in 2007, Zipp's tires were initially focused primarily on aerodynamics, which led to some compromises in rolling resistance and handling. With the Tangente line, Zipp clearly went back to the drawing board with renewed attention toward creating balanced, fast-rolling tires with supple shoulder grip for confident cornering. The Tangente Speed Clincher Tire features exceptional traction in dry conditions, an aerodynamic profile, and low rolling resistance. Billed as a race-ready tire best suited for days when the weather is fair and the roads are dry, the Tangente Speed features a high, 220 TPI nylon casing for a supple ride and confident road feel. Zipp also incorporates a proprietary rubber compound for impeccable grip to rail corners and jump on the attack, and the company claims that the tread pattern is designed to optimize aerodynamics. We haven't verified this claim, but we definitely welcome any feature that promises to help maintain a hard-earned gap when the line is still a ways off and our legs -- like our options -- are exhausted.
