DT Swiss XR 1501 Spline 29in Wheel DT Swiss XR 1501 Spline 29in Wheel
Lighter than its XM counterpart, DT Swiss' XR 1501 Spline 29in Wheel is intended for traditional crosscountry riding and racing. It favors weight savings, but without sacrificing too much in the strength department. In fact, the XR 1501's rims share the same Strength Boost Welding Technology as XM rims, meaning that you're able to ride with confidence over the rough stuff. The XR 1501's rim is narrower than the XM, providing an excellent platform for straight ahead speed. However, to compensate from the narrower width, DT Swiss' Strength Boost Welding Technology was employed to ensure that your wheels makes it through the rough stuff in one piece. Essentially, this process uses two small inserts that stabilize the rim during welding in order to increase structural integrity. Adding to the strength picture are straight-pull spokes. These DT Swiss spokes are double-butted for weight reduction, however, this process doesn't sacrifice strength. Additionally, the elimination of J-bend spokes, or spoke elbows, ditches one of the more common fail points of a mountain wheel. The best part is that these straight-pull spokes are replaceable with traditional tools, making home maintenance a simplified affair. At the nipple, DT Swiss injects its patented liquid to prevent backing out and to ensure durability. At the hub, DT Swiss' favored star ratcheting system takes care of reliability by handling extremely high loads with minimal amount of mechanical drag. And, like the spokes, it doesn't require proprietary tools in order to provide routine maintenance. In terms of braking, the hubs have a six-bolt rotor interface, and for added stiffness, they're available with a 15mm front thru- axle and a X-12 rear thru-axle. The DT Swiss XR 1501 Spline 29in Wheels are available in the color Black. The front comes equipped with a 15mm thru-axle, and the rear is available with 12x142mm thru-axle. Please note that these wheels are sold individually, and that the freehub body comes wi...

Easton EC90 Aero 55 Carbon Road Wheel - Tubular Easton EC90 Aero 55 Carbon Road Wheel - Tubular
You've seen all the fast, lightweight race wheels, but more often than not, those desirable attributes come at the expense of out-and-out strength. That's why we're so impressed with the Easton EC90 Aero 55 Carbon Tubular Wheel. As part of Easton's race-ready EC90 lineup, they'll slice through the air like a hot knife through melting butter, but the real surprise is that they're bombproof enough to withstand a full season of 'cross without flinching. Not bad for a wheel that, according to Easton's published test results, outperforms much deeper rims in a wind tunnel at just about every imaginable yaw angle. It may sound like hyperbole, but the EC90 Aero rim is a feat of modern engineering. Easton's engineering team opted to ignore convention, most notably rejecting the long-held belief that a mid-depth rim couldn't be the fastest thing on the road. The result of this grand experiment is the new Fantom rim profile. It's noticeably massive, with an external width of 28mm at the widest. Also noteworthy is the blunted internal profile that is said to greatly improve both stability and speed in crosswinds. According to Easton's published test results, the Fantom rim profile is faster at a variety of yaw angles than anything it was tested against, including its own 90mm deep section TT rim. Due to a lack of available data, it's possible that a few of the very deepest TT-specific rims are marginally faster in some circumstances, but they'll give up a great deal of stability, and at significantly higher weights, it's easy to see why Easton calls this the single wheelset arsenal. Unlike the clincher version, the Aero 55 tubular uses internal nipples. It means you'll have to remove the tire to replace a nipple, but this sacrifice means that the rim is considerably lighter than its clincher counterpart, which relies on a rivnut style nipple insert to provide an undrilled inner rim wall, for tubeless compatibility. The rim profile isn't the only new aspect of the Aero 55...

HED Jet 4+ Carbon Road Wheelset - Clincher HED Jet 4+ Carbon Road Wheelset - Clincher
With every wheelset, there is some sort of compromise. If it's a super deep-dish, it will be expensive and it may not handle well in the wind. If it's a box rim, well, it'll be inexpensive, but most likely heavy. The HED Jet 4 Clincher Wheelset is designed to minimize compromises to give you a lightweight rim, with an aerodynamic advantage without having to refinance your home. The Jet 4 rims are 46mm deep, which is about double the depth of the HED Belgium series (or most traditional hybrid v-section wheels), but half the depth of HED's flagship Jet 9. The weight is in the ballpark of traditional 32-spoke, box-section clinchers, which are the 'standard' wheels that many of us are on, but the aerodynamic properties of the Jet 4 are far superior.HED has found that the Jet 4 slices 50-90 grams of aerodynamic drag off of a conventional wheelset. That's a minimum of a 25-40 second savings in a 40k time trial, or five to eight watts every second that you ride. Those savings are aerodynamic drag alone. There is also a reduction in the rolling resistance because of the Jet 4's 25mm wide C2 rims.C2 stands for two Cs: Lower coefficient of rolling resistance (Crr) and better aerodynamics (Cda). Not without reason, the rims on the Jet 4 Wheelset are 25mm wide compared to the 19mm standard. This is to match widths with the tires that most use on their bikes -- 23mm. A 25mm rim paired with a 23mm tire changes the tire's footprint, resulting in more grip through straights and turns. This is because the tire has a straighter sidewall and deforms less at pressure. This design also produces a lower rolling resistance. In fact, when HED sent the wheels to Continental Tires for testing, the engineers shrugged their shoulders, figured there was no difference, but put them in the jig and ran the tests anyways. It turned out the 25mm width has 18% less rolling resistance. And because of the smoother tire shape, the transition air makes from the edge of the tread to the end of ...

Mavic Aksium Elite Wheelset - Clincher Mavic Aksium Elite Wheelset - Clincher
Mavic's latest Aksium Elite Wheel System returns virtually unchanged for the new model year, combining the same value, reliability, and obsessively developed French engineering that has long made Mavic yellow a staple on bikes of all levels. Obviously, the Aksium Elite doesn't stack up to the wheels atop the neutral support vehicles in European races, but it does make a damn fine training set for a dedicated athlete or an inexpensive but notable upgrade over most bikes' stock wheels. You've probably noticed that the Aksium Elite is substantially less expensive than Mavic's Ksyrium wheel offerings, and -- as expected -- that price difference comes with a change to the spec sheet. Rather than having FORE drilled rims and thread-in spoke grommets, the Aksium rim is a more traditional single-eyelet style where the spoke holes penetrate the rim's outer wall. The Aksium rims are constructed from S6000 aluminum, and Mavic uses its UB Control technology to mill the braking surface. The result is improved brake friction and smooth, controlled stopping in almost any weather conditions. The wheels feature 20 (front and rear) steel spokes with brass nipples. Each spoke is equipped with Mavic's Self Lock technology that uses a special shape on the spoke end to make it impossible to loosen when it's on the thread. The design reduces tension loss, and the wheels stay truer, longer. The Aksium Elite wheels aren't as light as some costlier counterparts, but their outstanding durability and Mavic's aerodynamic details help to compensate for the extra grams. The 21mm rim profile, low spoke count, and use of bladed spokes manage to mitigate much of their beefiness. And, while the Aksium uses the identical lightweight FTS-L steel freehub body as the Ksyrium Elite and SL wheels, its sealed bearing hubs lack on-bike adjustability. The Aksium Elite system comes complete with Mavic's Yksion Elite Guard tires, which represent a substantial improvement over the Aksion tires that came wit...

Mavic Crossmax Elite WTS 27.5in Boost Wheel Mavic Crossmax Elite WTS 27.5in Boost Wheel
With beefy axle widths moving past the domain of slacked-out gravity tanks and finding their way to even the lightest cross-country frames, Mavic is ready to outfit your new Boost-equipped XC rig with its Crossmax Elite WTS 27. 5in Boost Wheelset. Featuring Mavic's Interspoke Milling 4 Dimensions (ISM 4D), this wheelset boasts a lightweight rim that spins up fast over almost any terrain and a hubset that jumps the second you drop power into the pedals. The better spoke bracing angle of Boost axles makes the whole wheel system even stiffer, improving the ride in terms of efficient climbing and cat-on-carpet tracking through terrain. The rims feature Inter Spoke Milling 4 Dimensions (ISM 4D), the latest iteration of one of Mavic's signature design pieces. It involves milling the unnecessary material from a rim to eliminate grams and reduce rotational mass along the wheel's circumference. The original ISM milling was limited to the rim's inner face. It's successor, ISM 3D, expanded that treatment to the sidewalls, and ISM 4D takes things a step further, smoothing the rim's transitional angles as much as possible while maintaining its structural integrity. The result is a net 15% reduction in claimed weight without sacrificing stiffness or durability, as well as increased aerodynamic benefits with a reduction in potential footholds for the wind to catch on. While Mavic's ISM 4D keeps rotational mass low, the Instant Transfer System 4 (ITS-4) rear hub ensures that all that efficiency isn't wasted by sluggish, unresponsive engagement. ITS-4 is a four-pawl system that alternates engagement between two pairs of pawls. Since both pairs engage at different points in the freehub's rotation, the gap between engagement points falls to just 7. 5 degrees of free play. This quick engagement is noticeable while sprinting out of corners and surging for position in mass starts, and it also shines on technical climbs that require you to pick through trail furniture and pop over r...

Mavic Crossmax Elite WTS 27.5in Wheel Mavic Crossmax Elite WTS 27.5in Wheel
While it may seem easy to get bogged down in the myriad acronyms peppering the Mavic Crossmax Elite WTS 27. 5in Wheel's spec sheet, the only thing that really matters is that the mishmash of letters and numbers results in a lightweight wheelset that's fast enough to rip any cross-country course and strong enough to withstand the bumps along the way. The star of the show is undoubtedly Mavic's Inter Spoke Milling 4 Dimensions (ISM 4D) process, which is a mainstay in reducing rotational weight and enabling the Crossmax Elite to accelerate in a snap and hold speed across varying terrain.ISM 4D represents the latest iteration of one of Mavic's signature design pieces: milling the unnecessary material from a rim to eliminate grams and reduce rotational mass along the wheel's circumference. The original ISM was limited to the rim's inner face. It's successor, ISM 3D, expanded that treatment to the sidewalls. ISM 4D goes a step further, smoothing the rim's transitional angles as much as possible while maintain the rim's structural integrity. The net result is a 15% reduction in claimed weight without a corresponding penalty to stiffness or durability, and it also increases the rim's aerodynamics by minimalizing potential footholds for the wind. By reducing resistance from inertia and air, ISM 4D wages a two-pronged campaign against the most pernicious foes of forward motion. While Mavic's ISM 4D is responsible for keeping rim weight low, the Instant Transfer System 4 (ITS-4) rear hub ensures that all that efficiency isn't wasted by sluggish, unresponsive engagement. Mavic Crossmax Elite WTS Boost Wheel - 29in Mavic Crossmax Elite WTS Boost Wheel - 29in
When talking beefy axles widths, cross-country isn't usually the first discipline that comes to mind. However, with the recent trends in Boost axles bleeding out from their more gravity-aided arena into all aspects of off-road riding, XC rigs have seen an influx of Boost frame options. Mavic steps up to meet this trend with its Crossmax Elite WTS 29in Boost Wheelset, which adds 148 and 110mm spacing to a build that's light and fast with durability to handle whatever terrain the course provides. While Boost defines the hubs, the star of the rims is Mavic's Inter Spoke Milling 4 Dimensions (ISM 4D) process. Mavic Crossmax SL Pro LTD WTS 27.5in Wheelset Mavic Crossmax SL Pro LTD WTS 27.5in Wheelset
Mavic's Crossmax SL Pro LTD WTS 27. 5in Wheelset may self-identify as an XC race platform, but the adoption of the new 27. 5in wheel standard means that it can also nimbly navigate rock gardens and steep climbs without the wheel flop of its larger, 29er counterpart. Its number one job remains speed, though, and few of the wheelset's features play as large a role in its ability to accelerate and hold speed across varying terrain as Mavic's Inter Spoke Milling 4 Dimensions (ISM 4D) process. ISM 4D removes excess material in targeted areas so as not affect durability, netting a lower rotational mass and reducing the wheel's tendency to remain at rest. Less inertial resistance means more forward progress, so after you've cleaned that slow, techy line, they'll be ready to fire on all cylinders. While Mavic's ISM 4D is responsible for keeping the rim weight down, the Instant Transfer System 4 (ITS-4) rear hub ensures that all that low-weight efficiency isn't wasted by sluggish, unresponsive engagement. IST-4 is a four pawl system that alternates engagement between two pairs of pawls. Since both pairs engage at different points in the freehub's rotation, the gap between engagement points falls to just 7. 5 degrees of free play. The center strip is built for unyielding speed, though the option to run the Pulse/Cro...

Mavic Ksyrium Elite WTS Wheelset - Clincher Mavic Ksyrium Elite WTS Wheelset - Clincher
The Mavic Ksyrium line has one of the most stellar reputations in the wheel industry for producing bombproof and multi-faceted wheelsets that can tackle almost any road riding or racing situation. The Mavic Ksyrium Elite WTS Clincher Wheelset has improved on this legacy with a redesign to better accommodate the shifting trend towards wider road tires while still maintaining its legendary versatility and durability. The big news for this Ksyrium is a widened internal rim width, up to 17mm from the 15mm of previous Ksyriums -- which may sound tiny, but it's a huge difference when you move from a 23mm to a 25mm tire. For both 23mm and 25mm tires, the wider rim makes for less of a bulging "light bulb effect" than a narrower rim with the same size tire, because the tire beads are able to sit at a wider stance on the rim. Combining less sidewall bulge with more air volume due to that wider stance translates to more stability when cornering and a reduced chance of pinch flats getting in the way of your ride time than wheels with narrower rims. While the trend towards using 25mm tires opens up doors for all sorts of math puns related to composite rims and numbers, it also serves a real purpose to positively impact ride quality. The wider tire reduces rolling resistance by as much as 13% when compared to a 23mm tire at the same tire pressure -- so more power gets allocated to forward speed instead of fighting friction with the pavement. Wider tires also give riders a comfier ride by running a lower tire pressure. At 20psi lower, a 25mm tire will have the same rolling resistance and a much more forgiving road feel than a 23mm tire. With this in mind, Mavic pairs 25mm tires with each Ksyrium Elite wheelset. Along with the wider rim, Mavic utilizes its Inter Spoke Milling 4 Dimensions (ISM 4D) process to create the classic Ksyrium rim shape, which is milled between each spoke. This process serves to reduce rim weight and lower the rotating mass of the wheel for better resp...

Using ever-reliable aluminum, Mavic shaped the Allroad Disc carefully, removing excess material to take advantage of aluminum's admirable blend of lightness and strength. Test the responsiveness of the Allroad disc as you attempt to maneuver up a slick gravel climb; the milled rim construction Mavic uses creates a wheelset that reacts quickly when you need it to on punchy climbs and loose sections of road. Normally, rim width would be a big enough deal on a new wheelset, but Mavic was in an overachieving mood when working on the Allroad Disc. If you're undecided on the Allroad Disc still, the brand new Instant Drive 360 hub alone should be enough motivation to scoop up a set of these wheels. The hub's design, featuring two interlocking ratcheting rings, is the first of its kind introduced on mass-produced wheels, and their nine claimed degrees of engagement and improved seals will make you realize what it actually feels like to pop out of a corner and accelerate into a straightaway. You can run the included Yksions clincher or tubeless, and if you do go tubeless, the rims are already sealed so you won't need to use any tape.

Mavic XA Elite WTS 27.5in Boost Wheelset Mavic XA Elite WTS 27.5in Boost Wheelset
There's nothing a mid-sized tire likes more than a wide platform to mount on, and Mavic's XA Elite WTS 27. 5in Boost Wheelset ensures that the tire gets its rims. The combination provides a generous platform for a proper mid-sized tire--and by "proper," we mean a tire whose girth is built for wider rims in order to ensure that the knobby cornering grip doesn't migrate up onto the center strip. The combination of a wide rim and a plump tire make for higher stiffness, more traction, and added cushion that in turn doesn't migrate into the mushiness of plus-sized tires. The rim is classically Mavic: light, stiff, and as durable as alloy hoops come. The low weight comes courtesy of Mavic's oh-so-French ISM 4D process of extruding and machining the rim--ooo-la-la!--a process that's now in its fourth generation. With each successive iteration, ISM has gotten more and more extreme, removing extra material and rounding off the squared edges of previous versions. The strategic milling ensures that lost material doesn't equate to lost stiffness; however, this new generation is admittedly helped in the stiffness department by the wider rim and the improved spoke bracing angle of Boost hubs. The XA Elite's rims also lose a bit of material from the inside, where Mavic has eliminated the bead hook in an update to its original Universal Standard Tubeless (UST) tire bed design. UST first surfaced in the late '90s, when Mavic teamed up with Michelin and Hutchinson to effectively kill the tube. As with most things bike-related, Mavic proved that it was ahead of its time, and it took tubeless a while to catch on in the popular imagination. Now, of course, it's everywhere, and Mavic celebrated the technology's renaissance by introducing yet another development; namely, the hookless beads mentioned above. Though it's counter-intuitive at first, eliminating the apparent security of a bead hook actually makes the tire more secure. Stronger tire beads, bead channels in the rim's tire bed...

Mavic XA Elite WTS 27.5in Wheelset Mavic XA Elite WTS 27.5in Wheelset
We're hard pressed to think of a trail scenario where Mavic's XA Elite WTS 27. 5in Wheelset isn't an appropriate choice. The French brand's signature rim machining means that the Elite drops some significant weight compared to the less expensive Crossride, and the generous internal width pairs perfectly with the included mid-width tires for all-mountain outings. The wheels present less resistance to the pedal stroke on chunky climbs, and the plump tires roll through rocks while staying glued to the trail and providing added cushion. The rims' horst and graben profile comes courtesy of Mavic's Inter Spoke Milling 4 Dimensions (ISM 4D), which involves the strategic removal of rim material in areas that don't affect stiffness or durability. The result isn't quite as light as the superlative all-carbon XA Pro rims, but the Elites do come with the added benefit of peace of mind. Every baby head, log rollover, and rim strike won't cause your heart to skip a beat wondering if your carbon wonder hoops have come through intact--the XA Elite's predecessors have a long track record of durability. The XA Elite's rims also lose a bit of material from the inside, where Mavic has eliminated the bead hook in an update to its original Universal Standard Tubeless (UST) tire bed design. Mavic XA Elite WTS 29in Boost Wheelset Mavic XA Elite WTS 29in Boost Wheelset
The mid-travel 29er is no longer a novelty, and Mavic's 29in XA Elite WTS Boost Wheelset adds the final element to push wagon wheels into proper all-mountain territory: rim width. The rim's 25mm internal width lets 2. 35in tires fill out with more air volume. More volume means lower PSI, which in turn translates to more traction, more cushion, and--when paired with the durable Crossmax Quest tires--fewer flats. The wide rims are matched with equally wide Boost hubs, which improve spoke bracing angle and overall wheel stiffness to eliminate the one issue we've had with wagon wheels: noodliness. Despite its huge diameter and width, the rim is still classically Mavic: light, stiff, and as durable as alloy hoops come. The low weight comes courtesy of Mavic's oh-so-French ISM 4D process of extruding and machining the rim, a process that's now in its fourth generation. Mavic XA Elite WTS Wheelset - 29in Mavic XA Elite WTS Wheelset - 29in
29ers are now well and truly invested in the all-mountain game, and the wide rims on Mavic's 29in XA Elite WTS Wheelset further cement wagon wheels' claim to big terrain fame. The rim's 25mm internal width lets 2. 35in tires fill out with more air volume. More volume means lower PSI, which in turn translates to more traction, more cushion, and--when paired with Mavic's surprisingly durable Crossmax Quest tires--fewer flats. And that's all in addition to the natural aggression of the high angle attack that 29ers bring to hardpack and light terrain. Despite its huge diameter and width, the rim is still classically Mavic: light, stiff, and as durable as alloy hoops come. Mercury Wheels G1 Carbon Disc Wheelset - Tubeless Mercury Wheels G1 Carbon Disc Wheelset - Tubeless
Bumpy gravel roads, light-duty singletrack, and tours across state lines call for a stout and supportive wheelset that's wide enough for running larger rubber, yet light and snappy when you're hammering up climbs and pedaling across miles of countryside. Designed for this very purpose, the Mercury G1 Carbon Disc Wheelset offers a superb balance of rolling efficiency, proven strength, and high-volume support for gravel exploration, bikepacking adventures, and long-distance tours. Sitting at a whopping 30-millimeters across (external width), the G1 Carbon Disc Wheelset supports higher volume tires in the neighborhood of 35 to 40-millimeters across, give or take a few millimeters for your riding preferences. Tubeless-ready rims allow you to drop the pressure of wider tires, in turn lending a smooth and supple sensation across rough roads and gravel surfaces. Ultimately, this means you'll conserve energy without the fatiguing feel of jarring bumps and excess vibration you've become accustomed to with gravel road exploration. Carbon construction maximizes stiffness, meaning you'll feel its snappy acceleration the instant you step on the gas. It's also stronger than its aluminum counterparts, ensuring longevity when you inevitably thrash 'em over jarring roads and unpaved surfaces. The G1 Carbon Disc Wheelset is designed for disc brakes and thru-axles, but is also adaptable to a front quick-release skewer, making it a great choice for a modern gravel world where no "standard" is ever really standard. Plus, its disc brake-compatibility means you won't have to worry about the loss in braking composure normally associated with a carbon road wheelset.

Mercury Wheels M1 Disc Brake Wheelset - Clincher Mercury Wheels M1 Disc Brake Wheelset - Clincher
As much as you love your 'cross wheels, knobby tires just aren't as fun on pavement when you're trying to throw down for county sign sprints in a pack of skinny tires. What your 'cross bike needs is a solid set of affordable aluminum hoops like the Mercury Wheels M1 Disc Brake Clincher Wheelset for a dose of roadie speed to knock out summer base miles and pastry-fueled group rides. Made from lightweight yet durable alloy, these wheels are the ideal training companion to give your 'cross bike new life on the road and let your race wheels take a break from the elements. The M1's 18mm internal rim width belies a road-focused intention to provide a solid platform for today's trend of 25mm tires, and tubeless compatibility empowers those of us looking to ditch the tubes and reap the benefits of lower tire pressure and a smoother ride. While we wouldn't necessarily recommend mounting 33mm 'cross tires on rims this narrow, the tubeless compatibility and a quick consultation of the ETRTO charts indicate that they'll also serve as pit wheels in a pinch when your usual spares are at the shop for maintenance.

Mercury Wheels M1 Wheelset - Clincher Mercury Wheels M1 Wheelset - Clincher
The days of clear delineations between delicate race wheels and bombproof training wheels are largely past, but it still feels wrong to head out the door into a looming weather forecast and risk putting our beautiful carbon wheels through the stress of high winds, rainstorms, and the road grime that often accompanies those conditions. Instead, leave the carbon at home for more fair weather endeavors and swap out your brake pads to roll under the clouds with calm peace of mind on a solid set of aluminum training wheels like the Mercury Wheels M1 Clincher Wheelset. Made from lightweight yet durable alloy, this wheelset is the ideal training companion to give your race wheels a break from the elements and a more than capable option to have waiting patiently in the wheel pit or follow truck on race day. A 17mm rim width sits on the narrow side of ever-widening rim trends, which we feel makes this wheelset well suited for riders who prefer 23mm or 25mm road tires over something beefier.

Mercury Wheels M5 Clincher Wheelset Mercury Wheels M5 Clincher Wheelset
It's appropriate that Mercury Wheels' name and logo reference a Roman god who is the patron of, among other things, travelers and thieves. Atop Mercury's M5 Clincher Wheelset, Eric Marcotte journeyed from his day job in Arizona to Chattanooga, Tennessee to nab the 2014 US national championship ahead of the pros of the European peloton. It's the ultimate race wheel for the working cyclist. If you're in the market for deep dish carbon rims, then you've probably already made the assumption that the number in the M5's name denotes a depth of 55mm. The rim's width is left out, though, and rim width is a big deal these days. The M5 is a solid 23. 5mm wide, which means you can run lower PSI for a more comfortable ride that corners with unparalleled confidence. Wider rims also have some counter-intuitive effects when compared to those standard 19mm rims: they actually decrease rolling resistance and increase aerodynamics. The M5s' construction uses Mercury's Dual Carbon Layer Process, or DLP. DLP blends high- and mid-moduli carbon fibers to tease out the best balance between the lightweight and stiffness of the former and the fatigue-resistance and durability of the latter. DLP has also recently been updated with a newly engineered brake track material, improving stopping power over the previous, basalt-infused design. This increased confidence goes a long way toward addressing the poor braking that is one of the most common critiques of carbon wheels. The aerodynamic benefits of a deep dish rim are further complemented by Mercury's Seamless Transition Technology (STT), which integrates the brake strip with the rest of the rim in order to eliminate any obstructions to wind flow and reduce drag-causing turbulence. The result of this construction is a wheel that balances the above qualities with considerations of weight for what Mercury claims is its "most popular wheel by far." The M5s are finished off with Sapim's indefatigable CX-Ray spokes and Mercury's own hubs. T...

Mercury Wheels X1 Carbon Enduro 27.5in DT Swiss 240 Wheelset Mercury Wheels X1 Carbon Enduro 27.5in DT Swiss 240 Wheelset
Mercury Wheels is conveniently located just up the road from the Competitive Cyclist offices, so we've had the opportunity to spend some time putting its X1 Carbon Enduro 27. 5in DT Swiss 240 Wheelset through the ringer on the local trail systems. We can attest that these rims are stiff and responsive with DT Swiss' venerable 240 hubs ensuring they roll fast and smooth no matter the terrain. The rims are built with a hookless bead, which--contrary to what common sense might suggest--makes the rim-to-tire bead connection more reliable. Burping and tire blow-offs are actually more common with hooked rims, and hookless models also demonstrate improved tire retention. By eliminating the ridge of material constituting the hook, hookless beads also enjoy increased structural integrity, which is a definite plus when you consider that the X1 Carbon Enduro is built to handle the big hits of enduro and all-mountain riding. We've found that mounting some tire brands can be a little tricky, but once they're on, the bead holds a tubeless setup steady. In addition to that hookless bead, Mercury employs a hefty 26mm internal rim width designed to support the wider tires preferred by today's enduro shredders. This wider rim lets the tire take on a fuller shape with straighter sidewalls than the light bulb associated with narrower rims, which in turn provides increased stability and more rubber on the ground at any given time. On the trail, this means better cornering and increased grip with the added bonus of fewer pinch flats compliments of that rounder shape.

Mercury Wheels X3 27.5in Wheelset Mercury Wheels X3 27.5in Wheelset
Our first taste of Mercury, Utah's own sandaled god of speed, came on the road in the form of the US championship-winning M5 carbon wheels. We were converted pretty handily, and several Competitive staffers can be seen on the roads spinning the distinctive logo. Given this enthusiasm, we obviously had no choice but to jump at the chance to also stock Mercury's X3 27. 5in Wheelset for our off-road adventures. After all, life isn't (just) carbon and Lycra; sometimes we find that a little alloy and a lot of dirt are the tickets to staying motivated to hit our cycling goals -- especially if the goal is just to have fun on cranks. The X3 rims are an XC-specific model, built from a lightweight, stiff aluminum that lives up to the trail-furniture-be-damned attitude that their efficient ride quality inspires. At 24mm, the tubeless-ready rims are a touch wider than many traditional XC race models, so they'll seat slightly fatter tires at a lower PSI with less chance of rolling off while leaving hot tracks across a berm. In addition to a safer setup, the wider rims also allow more tire volume, grippier cornering, and less rolling resistance. Mercury's six-bolt rear hub is convertible for use with either 135 or 142mm axles, so they're compatible with most current frames and they're proof against the dimensions of what looks to be the likely future standard. Though the adapter isn't included here, it's nice to know it's available. The fact that they're built for 27. 5in tires means they're future-proof in that regard, too, as the superior angle of attack and nimble handling of the greater than/less than tire size makes a strong argument for its off-road hegemony going forward.

Of course, you can't fully benefit from your pudgy, fun-loving new set of donuts if you try to wrap them over too-narrow rims that make them feel sloppy, so invest in the Mercury X3 Enduro 29in Boost Wheelset to give them the expansive partners they deserve. Made out of a lightweight, durable alloy, the X3 Enduro makes a worthy upgrade for the stock hoops you've been meaning to replace, and it won't blow your entire trail travel fund for the summer. While alloy isn't as stiff as carbon, the improved spoke bracing angle of Boost axles conspires to reduce flex while dancing up climbs and cleaning jarring lines. With a 29mm internal width, the X3 will welcome your plump new tires with open arms onto a plush platform that maintains trail dexterity while it softens your ride. Profile Design 1/Fifty Carbon Clincher Wheelset Profile Design 1/Fifty Carbon Clincher Wheelset
With flimsy ultralight wheels becoming the norm in the industry, being able to find solid wheelset that won't weigh your bike down has become increasingly difficult. Profile Designs understood your plight and quickly got to work designing the 1/Fifty Carbon Clincher Wheelset--a stiff and stable wheelset with a full carbon aero rim that doesn't cost more than your frame. The wide wheels and full-carbon aero rim yields stability when pummeled with a crosswind, and the Tg resin quickly dissipates heat for reliable braking during long, winding descents. In order to keep the price of the wheels within most cyclists' budget, Profile Design utilized the same production model it used to build its TwentyFour series by incorporating a semi-automated system that streamlines the manufacturing process.

Profile Design 38/TwentyFour Carbon Clincher Disc Wheel Profile Design 38/TwentyFour Carbon Clincher Disc Wheel
Back in the '90s, Profile Design was primarily involved in creating aero bars and wind-cutting accessories for triathlon bikes. Since then, they've been busy in developing cutting-edge wheels for road cycling and racing applications. Case in point, the 38/TwentyFour Carbon Clincher Disc Wheel by Profile Design is a speedy workhorse that sets PRs on your favorite segments with its impressive balance of streamlined aerodynamics, unbelievable power transfer, and relatively lightweight construction. 6-bolt disc hubs deliver reliable stopping power during sustained descents and soaking-wet conditions, which is something that traditional carbon wheels have struggled with in the past. Profile's engineers settled upon the 38/TwentyFour's rim depth and width profile from extensive wind tunnel testing in conjunction with Computational Fluid Dynamics. Because wind tunnel testing alone isn't necessarily transferable to real-world situations where wind speed and direction are constantly in flux, Profile Design worked with Speed Theory to simulate the historical wind patterns and angles of popular race courses while riding the 38/TwentyFour. After simulating the predominant wind speeds and patterns of popular race venues, Profile then tried out different width and depth profiles with Computational Fluid Dynamics to achieve an optimal balance between slippery aerodynamics and stable handling in tricky crosswinds. The result is a wheel that's 38-millimeters deep and 24-millimeters wide externally, giving you just enough aerodynamics to shave precious seconds on the flats while maintaining a relatively low weight on the climbs and handling crosswinds without the dreaded "sail effect."Looking to the hubs, you'll find the use forged and machined 6061-T6 aluminum with a shot peened anodized finish that's 18 percent stronger than standard aluminum freehubs. The shot peened anodized finish prevents cassette damage from digging into the hub body or moving unnecessarily, which translate...

Profile Design 58/TwentyFour Carbon Clincher Disc Wheel Profile Design 58/TwentyFour Carbon Clincher Disc Wheel
Given Profile Design's notoriety for producing aerodynamic triathlon components, it makes perfect sense they'd create the 58/TwentyFour Carbon Clincher Disc Wheel for riders seeking to shave every second from spirited training rides and competitive racing scenarios with their medium-dish profile that balances aerodynamics with crosswind stability. Carbon construction ups the ante in stiffness, ensuring every watt of available power is transferred into forward motion. And since disc brakes have become increasingly popular with road cyclists and triathletes alike, this particular wheel accommodates the powerful stopping force of 6-bolt disc rotors. Extensive research and design went into the 58/TwentyFour's rim depth and width profile, with Profile engineers using a mixture of wind tunnel testing and Computational Fluid Dynamics in testing the wheel's aerodynamic prowess. And because wind tunnel testing alone isn't necessarily transferable to real-world situations where wind speed and direction are constantly in flux, Profile Design worked with Speed Theory to simulate the historical wind patterns and angles of popular race courses in relation to the 58/TwentyFour's wheel depth and width profile. After simulating the predominant wind speeds and patterns of popular race venues, Profile then tried a number of different rim widths and depths for their particular wheel applications. In this case, they settled upon a 58-millimeter deep carbon wheel for an obvious aero advantage with a slightly curved side and rounded spoke-facing edge that manages lateral crosswinds better than a traditional airfoil rim. As for the 24. 5-millimeter rim width, Profile found this width straightens the tire's sidewalls, subsequently creating a plusher ride with less rolling resistance. Looking at the hub, Profile uses a forged and machined 6061-T6 aluminum hub with a shot peened anodized finish that's 18 percent stronger than standard aluminum freehubs. Race Face Aeffect 27.5in Wheelset Race Face Aeffect 27.5in Wheelset
In Race Face's own words, the Aeffect 27. 5in wheelset was designed to be a "hardworking, no-nonsense set of hoops." Already known for solid, reliable drivetrain kit, Race Face has only recently entered the wheelset category, introducing a wheel for everyday XC and trail miles that further burnishes the company's sterling reputation for bombproof-ness. With a claimed weight of 1,820g, the Aeffects don't break any records for their lightness, but they also won't empty your wallet the way some of their featherweight compatriots will. To give the wheels stiffness and durability without the price tag of carbon, Race Face uses treated 6061 aluminum to construct the rims. They feature a generous 23mm internal width and 27. 3mm external width with a depth of 20. 5mm. They're laced with 28 straight-pull, bladed spokes in a cross-laced pattern to achieve a stiff and snappy response as you corner and climb on singletrack. Race Face Aeffect SL 29in Wheelset Race Face Aeffect SL 29in Wheelset
Wagon wheels have had their detractors from the beginning. "Too flexi," "wander on climbs," "don't track right"--we've heard it all. But in the end, they're just faster than their stunted counterparts, and when it comes to XC speed, fast is fun. Race Face's Aeffect SL 29in Wheelset embodies the speed-first ethos of 29ers in a wheel whose rim balances width against weight, going a tad wider than traditional XC wheels without falling victim to the rim-width arms race currently gripping the enduro world. That's not to say the rims are tiny. At 24mm, their internal width eclipses the standard external width of cross-country race wheels from just a few years ago. They better accommodate slightly larger tires, allowing for higher air volume, lower PSI, increased traction, and an additional layer of cushion for sopping up trail chatter. Since they're branded Aeffect, you can rest assured that they're also tough as hell. The rims are laced to Race Face's Trace hubs. The Trace model doesn't quite have the lightning-strike engagement of the brand's new Vault freehub, but that's just indicative of their different recommended uses. Since it's featured on an XC model, the Trace hub's three pawls and 9. 2-degree engagement are more than equal to the needs of endurance events and long periods spent at speed. The Vault's faster engagement is nice if you're muscling big-travel enduro sleds over stop-and-start rocky cruxes, but the Aeffect SL's Trace hubs do the trick when low weight and high speed are the order of the day.

DT Swiss 350 disc hubs are ideally suited for more powerful riders who prefer XC, trail, and gravity rides, and the added stiffness from the straight pull spokes enhance overall responsiveness.

Reynolds 27.5 AM LTD Carbon Wheelset Reynolds 27.5 AM LTD Carbon Wheelset
After having the chance to ride some of the new Boost-stiffened enduro sleds, we admit that our own 142/100mm axles and alloy hoops are feeling a bit insubstantial. To address this, we partnered with Reynolds for the custom 27. 5 AM LTD Carbon Wheelset, which features DT Swiss hubs, Reynolds' carbon expertise, and our own penchant for understated graphical styling. The result is a wheelset with one of our favorite hubs, a carbon rim that stiffens up non-Boost rides, and an aesthetic that stands out from any other 27. 5in Reynolds wheels. We're well familiar with the stiff mettle of Reynolds' 27. 5 AM rims from personal experience, so they were the obvious choice as a canvas for our arts-and-crafts impulses. There's a reason why other wheel manufacturers focus on making hubs and just lace them to re-branded Reynolds rims: the Utah-based company has already all but perfected the science of the mid-sized wheel. Since carbon rims are stiff enough that the difference between Boost and 142/100mm axles is far less notable than with alloy rims, the 27. 5 AM LTDs go some way toward erasing Boost envy without forcing us to shell-out for a new race frame. Reynolds' hubs were also an obvious choice, and we've opted for the DT logo instead of the usual Reynolds re-branding to give the wheels more of a custom-built look. Finally, we admit to the occasional streak of vanity, and the half-and-half color of the wheels' Reynolds label is our way of visually representing a proper all-mountain bike's ability to straddle climbing and descending. We enjoy the challenge of cleaning lines in both directions, and the 27. 5 AM LTDs' combination of low rotational mass, high stiffness, and generous internal width make for a wheelset that climbs like a featherweight but tracks like an enduro bruiser while enjoying the secure footing of high-volume tires.

Shimano Dura-Ace 9100 C24 Carbon Laminate Road Wheelset - Clincher Shimano Dura-Ace 9100 C24 Carbon Laminate Road Wheelset - Clincher
When Shimano first released its Dura-Ace carbon laminated clincher, we swore we could hear palpable sighs of relief from cycling forums, group rides, and tech geeks thumbing through the glossies. Some we're sure exercised healthy skepticism, as the first round of carbon clinchers had done a good job at inspiring fear rather than confidence, but as time went on, it became clear that, by combining the lightweight of carbon with the reliability of alloy, Shimano had somehow conjured a wheel that rose above the hindrances its ancestors had faced. The Dura-Ace 9100 C24 Carbon Laminated Clincher Wheelset continues the legacy its landmark predecessor established, updated to modern standards and remaining every bit as strong a member of the carbon clincher category as it was when it was first introduced. The C24 may be the least changed member of the Dura-Ace 9100 line, with the only change coming in the form of wider flange spacing, which further increases the wheels' torsional and lateral rigidity by improving the spoke bracing angle. The previous C24 hubs were already relatively wide because of Shimano's angular contact bearings. The bearings' shape allows them to be pushed as far outboard as possible, making the hub a wider platform for the spokes to stand on and making the additional width even more impressive. Notably, and despite the increased drive stiffness, the improved spoke angle has no impact on the rim's engineered radial flex, which means the C24 still takes the edge off of harsh bumps. The rim's construction, which is ultimately responsible for the wheelset's devoted following, remains the same. It involves an alloy body that's extruded and machined to thin the walls down to an almost two-dimensional 0. 6mm wall thickness--about half of the typical alloy rim wall thickness of 1 to 1. 3mm. This obviously reduces weight to a minimum, but it also does mean the overall structure is less sound, so Shimano buttresses the rim with a jealously guarded carbon lam...

Shimano Dura-Ace WH-9000-C24-TL Carbon Road Wheelset - Tubeless Shimano Dura-Ace WH-9000-C24-TL Carbon Road Wheelset - Tubeless
Logic prevailing, you'd assume that a lightweight wheelset would sacrifice its durability and ruggedness for weight savings. Well, the Shimano Dura-Ace WH-9000-C24-TL Carbon Tubeless Road Wheelset is here to throw that notion by the wayside. Shimano's proprietary Carbon Lamination technology reduces the rim's aluminum to only 0. 6-millimeters thick without sacrificing strength or stability, courtesy of its fused carbon layers for added lateral stiffness and strength. Although deep-dish rims are all the rage these days, this wheelset sticks to a lower profile 24-millimeter depth for fast spin-up, as well as nimble handling in tricky crosswinds. Its 20. 8mm width adds a bit larger contact patch for greater traction, also allowing you to run a lower pressure for increased shock absorption, especially considering its tubeless-ready design. Additional performance-enhancing features include an offset design that takes into consideration the stress exerted by drive and non-drive sides, further reinforced by sturdy T-nut construction at the junction of the spoke and rim. The lightweight titanium freehub is housed within a wide flange hub for maximum efficiency and power transfer. Moreover, its cup-and-cone bearings resist undue stress from straightaways and hard corners. Please note that this wheelset works with tubes and tubeless setups, as well as 11-speed and 10-speed cassettes (with additional spacer).

Shimano RS21 Wheelset - Clincher Shimano RS21 Wheelset - Clincher
Your pricey carbon wheels have one job: to get you to the finish line faster during race season. With this knowledge, and since you probably spent a sizeable amount of money on them, we don't blame you for not wanting to take your carbon wheels outside when conditions are less than ideal. Shimano's RS21's won't be the fastest wheelset you put on your bike, but they're solid, capable training wheels that can handle salt on the roads or heavy rain without issue. If bad weather actually forces you inside completely, you can leave your carbon hoops pristine by using the RS21's on your trainer or rollers. They're compatible with 10 or 11-speed cassettes, with a quick-release free hub design and a 16/20 spoke count, and Shimano includes an indicator to allow you to keep track of how much wear the rims have as you rack up the base miles.

Shimano XTR M9000-TL Race 29-inch Clincher Wheelset Shimano XTR M9000-TL Race 29-inch Clincher Wheelset
Shimano's XTR drivetrain has been completely revamped with the introduction of the latest 9000 series, and we're extremely happy to report similar reinvention of the excellent XTR wheelsets. The Shimano XTR M9000-TL Race 29-inch Clincher Wheelset is your new best XTR option for a race-ready cross-country clincher. The new XTR wheels are built with Shimano's new carbon-laminated alloy rim construction. The technique capitalizes on the advantages of both materials while using each to compensate for the other's shortcomings. For example, full-carbon wheels can be prohibitively expensive. Aluminum rims can be cheaper, but often heavier, sometimes weaker, and ride quality can be compromised, as well. Shimano decided to engineer the two in conjunction with each other: a lightweight alloy rim extrusion receives full carbon fiber reinforcement here, the result being a durable, light, and relatively inexpensive rim that is torsionally stiff, vertically forgiving, and doesn't cost a down payment on a car. We love the new look, too. The Race version of the rims are 20mm wide internally, while the Trail versions are wider, at 24mm internally, to accommodate wider tires and create a larger contact patch for greater control in technical situations. Down in the hubs, proprietary bearings keep the precision-machined hubs spinning for years, and a revised axle and bearing configuration saves a bit of weight, as well. The Shimano XTR M9000-TL Race 29-inch Clincher Wheelset comes with a 142x12mm rear axle, and 100x15mm front axle, and a freehub body that can accommodate Shimano 10- or 11-speed XTR drivetrains. Both front and rear wheels have 28 spokes, and both are compatible with CenterLock rotors only.

Shimano XTR WH-M9020-TL 27.5in Wheelset Shimano XTR WH-M9020-TL 27.5in Wheelset
Not too big, not too small, not too heavy, not too fragile, and not too expensive, the Shimano XTR WH-M9020-Tl 27. 5in Wheelset fills the need for a race-inspired MTB wheel that rides at a high level without getting banged up or costing you your firstborn (and it won't even eat your pre-ride porridge). When Shimano redesigned its XTR drivetrains, it figured it needed a new wheel to go with it, so here we are. The M9020 is based off the XC-race-ready M9000, and employs Shimano's carbon-laminated rim construction, which maximizes the advantages and minimizes the disadvantages of both materials. Carbon reinforcements keep the aluminum nice and stiff, while the aluminum keeps the ride relatively smooth and the price relatively affordable. The M9000 is also 4mm wider internally, which accommodates wider tires and creates a larger contact area, so you'll have more traction when your circumstances start getting treacherous. Both wheels are set up with Shimano XTR M9000 hubs, which'll spin until the sun collapses on

Stan's NoTubes Arch EX 27.5in Boost Wheelset Stan's NoTubes Arch EX 27.5in Boost Wheelset
Stan's NoTubes' range consistently leads the tubeless industry with unique rim designs and unbeatable tubeless reliability. The Arch EX 27. 5in Boost Wheelset brings this bombproof functionality to the most aggressive, technical trails by combining the fast, light profile of Stan's XC-specific Crest and the burly internal arch design of the gravity-focused Flow. It's lighter, wider, and even more durable than the original Arch, and it features Boost axle widths for better tracking up front and a more responsive platform in the rear. The Arch EX utilizes Stan's trademark Bead Socket Technology (BST). BST features low-profile sidewalls that provide a better seat for the tire bead and allow for a pile of benefits compared to standard rims with higher sidewalls. When setup as tubeless, BST provides an exceptional seal while allowing the tire to hold a greater volume of air than rims that place the bead 2-4mm below the edge. This interface allows the tire to maintain its full shape for a wider, more stable rolling platform compared to the same tire mounted on a standard rim. Pairing BST with the ability to run up to 30% lower air pressure than on a standard clincher wheel results in more stability, better handling, solid cornering, and better overall control. These rims are also compatible with standard tubes, and the lower sidewall drastically reduces pinch flat risk by reducing the amount of material present for the tube to pinch against. This means less time sitting in the dust wrestling with a flat at the side of the trail and more time shredding your favorite loops. Stan's laces the Arch EX rims to its all-new Neo hubs, which feature smooth-spinning, oversized chrome bearings that glide on a stiff, strong, swaged axle. The Neo holds the bearings at a wider stance for a claimed threefold increase in strength compared to standard hub designs -- gains that the wider Boost hubs only add to. It also boasts four precision pawls that simultaneously engage a forged ste...

Stan's NoTubes Arch EX 27.5in Wheelset Stan's NoTubes Arch EX 27.5in Wheelset
Stan's NoTubes continues to sit atop the rapidly evolving world of tubeless wheels with its advanced rim design and unparalleled tubeless reliability. Not surprisingly, you'll find wheels such as the Arch EX 27. 5in Wheelset attached to almost any type of bike out on the trails. Stan's brings together the light, fast profile of its XC-specific Crest and the bombproof internal arch design of the gravity-focused Flow to create an all-around wheelset built to tackle a huge variety of trails. Since it's lighter, wider, and even more durable than the original Arch, the Arch EX will shred even the most aggressive, technical trails. This wheelset is built with Stan's signature Bead Socket Technology (BST), which features low profile sidewalls that provide a better seat for the tire bead and allow for a heap of benefits compared to standard rims with higher sidewalls. When set up as tubeless, BST rims provide an exceptional seal while allowing the tire to hold a greater volume of air. This interface lets the tire maintain its full shape for a wider, more stable rolling platform than if the same tire were mounted on a standard rim. When paired with BST's benefits, the ability to run up to 30% lower air pressure in a tubeless system results in exceptional tire stability, better handling, solid cornering, and better overall control out on the course. If you prefer clinchers, these rims are also compatible with tubes, with the lower sidewall drastically reducing pinch flat risk by reducing the amount of material present for the tube to pinch against. Stan's NoTubes Arch EX Predictive Steering Wheelset - 29in Stan's NoTubes Arch EX Predictive Steering Wheelset - 29in
While we typically focus on the tubeless rim design for Stan's wheels, the predictive steering hubs on the Arch EX 29in Predictive Steering Wheelset warrant some copy real estate up front. The predictive steering philosophy originates in the laboratories of SRAM, and Stan's adopts the technology here in order to reap the design's benefits of reduced torsional flex, better tracking, and more responsiveness when the pedals are turned in anger. These qualities are especially welcome on wagon wheels, helping Arch EX 29ers dispel the negative associations of noodliness that have dogged 29in wheels since their inception. Stan's Neo freehub system is another key beneficiary of more efficient energy transfer. That efficiency combines with the freehub's 10-degree engagement in order to propel you over rocky cruxes and help you navigate shelves and pop-ups while you earn the downhill on climbs. The hub bodies themselves are altered with wider flanges, increased axle diameters, and more contact area between the end caps and the fork dropouts--the cumulative effect of which is the above-noted increase in torsional stiffness. The hubs are laced to Stan's Arch EX rims, which incorporate two features that set Stan's apart as the industry's tubeless pioneer. The first is Bead Socket Technology (BST), which maintains a low profile without sacrificing security. Tires mounted on BST rims sit fatter than on rims with taller beads, increasing the tire volume by decreasing the restriction of the rim bead. Increased volume makes for more plush traction--especially when the tires are run tubeless. (ProTip: You should always run tubeless on the Arch EX rim.) The Arch EX's other key feature is alluded to by its name: The rim is reinforced with an internal arch and a thick spoke bed. It's also wider than the previous Arch model, and the combined effect of these dimensions is a rim that's equal to any abuse you'd throw at it on a five-inch all-mountain bike. Please note that the Arch EX 2...

Stan's NoTubes Flow EX 29in Wheelset Stan's NoTubes Flow EX 29in Wheelset
Improving a wheelset that's topped the podium at multiple World Cup and World Championship events is no easy task, but Stan's delivers with the Flow EX 29in Wheelset. Featuring a wider profile and lower, thicker sidewalls for increased durability compared to its venerable predecessor, the ZTR Flow, this wheelset takes all-mountain versatility to a new level. The Flow EX rolls fast over the most technical trails, resists damage from big hits, and boasts Stan's unparalleled tubeless reliability. Billed as a bombproof trail, all-mountain, and enduro wheelset, the Flow EX features a wide 25. 5mm internal rim width and 29. 1mm outer width to provide a solid platform for your tire of choice. The Flow EX incorporates Stan's Bead Socket Technology (BST), featuring notably low-profile sidewalls that allows the tire bead to seat more effectively. BST results in an exceptional tubeless seal while also allowing the tire to hold greater air volume than standard rims, so the tire maintains its full shape for a wider, more stable rolling platform. This means less time bunkered down in the dust wrestling with flats and more time shredding your favorite loops. Stan's new Neo OS hub set sits at the center of the Flow EX, featuring oversized, smooth bearings that glide on a strong, stiff, swaged axle. Vittoria Elusion Nero Road Wheelset - Clincher Vittoria Elusion Nero Road Wheelset - Clincher
Most of us will admit to pining over a fancy set of carbon fiber race hoops while lamenting that our wallets won't let us realize that dream. Sometimes in these cases, it's best to avoid the budget carbon woes (Delamination, anyone') and opt for race-worthy, ceramic-coated, aluminum awesomeness with the Vittoria Elusion Nero Road Clincher Wheelset. It's got stealthy aesthetics, so it won't betray your black on black race machine with a bright silver brake track, and it also benefits from the improved braking of ceramic-treated aluminum. Vittoria utilizes a 26mm rim depth up front and a 28mm depth out back to create a light, low profile set of hoops that boasts the versatility to handle a wide range of surfaces and wind conditions while still gaining some aerodynamic advantages over traditional box-rim fare. Across the braking surface, a Ceramic Nero finish gives these wheels a sleek, stealthy look while also bringing claims of increased durability and braking performance in both dry and wet conditions. While we haven't had a chance to test this out ourselves, the finish looks markedly similar to some other blacked-out aluminum rims that have long been lauded for exceptional braking power and longevity. At the center sits Vittoria's SwitchIT hubset, which is most notable for its tool-free freehub removal, making swapping a cinch. As an added bonus, the freehub can be removed with the cassette still on, which means one could potentially keep frequently used cassettes on their own freehubs for lightning fast gearing changes and hassle-free swaps. For the other details, the SwitchIT boasts cartridge bearing and an on oversized rear flange for durable, smooth spinning. Each Vittoria Elusion Nero Road Clincher Wheelset is packaged with ceramic brake pads and a wheel bag for safe storage and transportation.
